Disclaimer: I am posting this review with the knowledge that this game's online requires knowing where to find the community. Nexon's historic lack of support for their games wound up hurting this game's chances of really breaking out, and that is a tragedy. Sadly, that ship has sailed as of this writing, with Eighting now working on Hunter x Hunter: Nen Impact, and Arc System works having since moved onto other projects. The reason that this happened was that the game didn't recieve major updates for months after launch, and only got DLC support around a year later. For a multiplayer centric game, this is a death sentence, and it sucks, because the following review is going to highly recommend the game. --------------- DNF Duel is a real gem of a 2D fighting game. Published by the Nexon MORPG Dungeon Fighter Online developed by Neople, and Jointly developed by Neople, Eighting, and Arc System Works, this game is an incredibly fast paced, high-octane airdasher that feels incredibly fun to play. DNF Duel's combat breaks the mold typical of 2D fighting games in the modern era in that instead of having traditional super meters, most of your special moves (not all) detract from a regenerating MP bar. This bar's capacity starts off at 100, and gradually rises to 200 as the player takes damage. Damage inflicted is not permanent without using an MP using skill, instead leaving behind stone-grey 'dead health' that will regenerate as the target avoids damage. This grey health can be spent to cancel certain animations and restore MP to extend the player's combos. Once a player is low on health, passive buffs activate, and if their MP is at a certain amount, they are allowed to user their super, an Awakening Skill, once per round. The dynamics this combat leads to tend to be incredibly fast paced, where one bad move will get the hapless victim laid low in seconds if they are not careful. I don't know which developer handled what aspect of the game, but Eighting's 'If Everyone is Busted, No one is" mentality is clearly at play. And it is glorious. The game, sadly, is lean on content, with only a handful of single player modes, and an online that sadly requires you to find a dedicated group as DNF Duel's steam playerbase is sadly nearly extinct. However, if you can get a game going, you are in for a real joy of a fighting game that absolutely should NOT be slept on. Here's hoping someone can take lessons from this game and create a better supported spiritual successor one day.

I see this game as Arcsys' entree dish to the main course that is Guilty Gear Strive. It might not be super-meaty, it might not be overly complex, but damn is it an enjoyable experience that is fun to play! I absolutely love the feel of this game more than anything--it might sit up there next to Strive in the realm of modern fighting games with the most fun movement to my personal taste. Combat is very loose in the best way possible, and I love how easily hits flow into each other and connect into other moves. It's a really fun "unga bunga" game to just pick up and go at, and as an "unga bunga" gal, I really appreciate that. I do wish a few things were done differently. Particularly, the difficulty curve across the single player modes is all over the place--I ended up unknowingly fighting the hidden, SNK-style boss on a normal-difficulty Arcade run because the rest of the ladder had been so easy before then that I hadn't lost a single round. An exhilarating challenge, maybe, but one I wasn't prepared for at all. I also wish the characters you play as at least had proper names to make it easier for the player to connect with them, remember them, and want to engage with their stories which the game clearly wants you to care about. But past that inconsistency in difficulty, past the not having named characters, there lies a buttery smooth game with really cool character designs and visuals on top of really simple but fun mechanics that just allow you to go at it and have a good time with friends.

If you are looking for a good competitive fighting game to play online, look elsewhere 'cause this definitely ain't it. If you're looking for an utterly ridiculous fighting game where every single character has some of the most busted and hilariously broken options or a game to have some very silly fights with a friend in, this is the pinnacle of that. Every single character in this game is completely busted. Giant hitboxes that take up half the screen that are active for over a second, creating a wall behind your opponent at any time, probably half the cast or more having installs that let them cancel any special into any other special, etc. This game was not built with a competitive playstyle in mind. This game was built perfectly for playing either locally or in a discord call and just having a stupid fun time with. Absolutely give this a shot if utter nonsense with a friend sounds like a great time. Just probably get it on sale since $50 is a bit steep.

The main unfortunate thing about this game is that today's gamers have different expectations from new fighting game releases. They want frequent patches, and low turnaround time on new content after release. This game has had infrequent patches, and didn't launch any new content for the game for about one year after release. I say all the above simply to explain why the concurrent player count is low. Between that and the lack of support of the competitive scene, those are why this game never really took off. All that being said, I think it's worth buying if you're a fan of any of Eighting's previous 2D fighting games. They really know their stuff, and it shines through in this game. The characters all have distinct playstyles, and at this point, the game feels a lot more balanced than it did near launch. I strongly recommend it. Especially if you have people to play with.
