This DLC is flawed. It introduces things that I really don't like. Such as enemies that force you to use certain weapons, and ONLY those weapons. Spirits, specifically, force you to use the Plasma Rifle's tractor beam to kill it... forcing you to stand still... in a game with mobility-focused combat. And I personally do NOT like the Samur boss. For me he just kinda ran away and I spent most of it fighting OTHER demons - which got annoying. BUT, it is more DOOM Eternal, and the environments are cool. So, overall, it is flawed but the issues CAN be looked past and overcome if you play it right. But, if you don't have it and have the money... buy TDA or TDA: Revelations. If you can't or genuinely don't want to get either of them then getting this is perfectly fine. I am *mostly* fine with this DLC, it does it's job. (Or just replay the Campaign on a harder difficulty I dunno).
This might be one of my favourite DLCs to a game ever. It doesn't beat Blood and Wine from TW3 but it's definitely up there. A lot of people were very upset on release because... well it's super hard. It took me about 30 minutes to beat the first level, and that was knowing it was hard when I came in. I think if you play this game and you like this game, you should consider the DLC
More Doom Eternal for your Doom Eternal DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods - Part One, which is a long as hell title, is the first content DLC for well... uhh Doom Eternal. Continuing the story right from the end of the base game as the Doom Slayer, it continues the story with more levels and more importantly more demons to brutalize with your arsenal of big guns! If you're craving some more Doom Eternal content this absolutely fills up that desire, even if it's only a few really good new levels and some enemies. Gameplay of The Ancient Gods is basically the same as base Eternal in terms of basic structure. But amped up a absolute TON because this is after the Icon of Sin, so you're expect to already be at the peak of your slaying game. As such expect to see familiar tough faces along with a variety pack of new demons sprinkled into the mix. Although one of the few things I wasn't really keen on are some of the new enemies required you to use specific weapon mods to eliminate them. While yes there is a button to easily swap mods, it kinda felt like I was railroaded into playing a certain way the game wanted rather than working around the mechanics the game already established in the main game. Visually the DLC is still at that top tier but well optimized performance that id Tech 7 provided for the main game. Though you do get a some new level themes to fight through like a UAC research platform in the middle of the ocean or a swamp. Very inspired locals that feel distinct from stuff you've already experienced. Overall, The Ancient Gods - Part One craved that itch I had from finishing the base game. More of the fantastic demon slaying gameplay loop with new stuff sprinkled in. Really the only thing I would have personally changed is having those few enemies that need a specific weapon mod, just... don't. As mentioned, I think the gameplay loop excells when you're just given free reign to experiment with your arsenal, on what weapon combos, mods, and whatnot for your glorious demon pummeling. But don't wait just yet as the Part One of this DLC means there's a Part TWO! expanding on the basis expanded on here even further!
I had very limited knowledge of Eternal when I played it, and was very surprised to see that the DLCs had mixed reviews based on my experience with Eternal. I didn't mind Ancient Gods 1. To be very brief general with my opinions, the levels are very inconsistent with the length and difficulty. The overall designs of the objectives were less interesting to me. The new mechanics introduced were overall good, apart from making it so enemies can be randomly powered up by some blue ♥♥♥♥ which triples their health pools and makes them immune to staggering and all status effects, that can move to a new target even after you kill it, and that can only be stopped with a single mod on a weapon so you better hope you have enough ammo. I had no real gripe with the new enemy types, apart from the aforementioned blue piece of ♥♥♥♥. Unfortunately the end boss was just poorly designed in my opinion and not very fun to fight. This due to the boss revolving around the less interactive mechanics established previously in the DLC. This is not to say I think this DLC is bad, it unfortunately doesn't hold up to the standard of the base game. Which is fine, they tried new stuff out and they should be commemorated for doing so. Some stuff worked out better than others. And at the end of the day the DLC is well made, enjoyable and certainly worth your time and money. An optimistic 6.5/10 imo
