I hate autobattlers and for some reason find this one to not only be an exception, but one worth obsessing over. I could be playing Mina The Hollower or Dead as Disco and I'm doing more runs of this. Every build is viable, every character is unique, the trinket system means runs have real reliable plans and strategies. Sure once you get to endless the game becomes Alpha-Strike only and tanks/attrition can't hang. That's endless, and also only at the patch where I'm writing this. The base game of "Win 10 before losing 5" is damn near perfect. Writing this makes me want to boot it up again. Send help.

Overall: β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β―ͺ (4.5) Gameplay β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… (5.0) Replayability β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β―ͺ (4.5) Interface β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β―ͺ (4.5) Challenge β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜† (4.0) Value β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β―ͺ (4.5) I have 100+ hours gameplay, triple that if you include playtesting. I’m having an absolute blast with Down with the Ship. It takes the best parts of a backpack battler, auto-battler, and roguelite and turns them into something that feels both easy to pick up and endlessly expressive. Every run gives me meaningful choices, and I love how even small upgrades can turn into ridiculous long-term synergies if I build around them the right way. That constant feeling of discovering a new combo, a new surprise, or a new β€œhow did this actually work?” moment makes it incredibly hard to put down. What really stands out to me is how polished the whole experience already feels. The tooltips, stat breakdowns, and quality-of-life touches make the systems readable without taking away any of the strategy. I can play it casually and relax, or I can go full optimization mode and lose hours chasing the perfect ship. That balance between accessibility and depth is hard to pull off, and this game absolutely nails it. I also love how much personality and care comes through in the design. The battles are exciting, the build variety is huge, and the replay value feels massive because the game keeps encouraging experimentation instead of funneling me into one obvious solution. For an Early Access game, it already feels remarkably complete, and the amount of love behind it is obvious. If you enjoy clever synergies, satisfying buildcraft, and the joy of watching a ridiculous machine come together and actually work, this is an easy recommendation from me.

Down With The Ship is a backpack battler, masquerading as an autobattle game, posing as a roguelike/lite. And that sounds BONKERS. What's truly insane is how it manages to excel in all of these areas. I love roguelikes, Losing IS fun. And DWTS has made it into a spectacle in and of itself. I'm writing this review on release day, because I have over 600 hours into the Demo Version and i'd be damned if I didn't support it on the day of the big reveal. And the Dev's DELIVERED. I mean, kicked the a** of many things. You want varied playstyles, competitive strategies, driven mechanics and interesting combo's? It's here. A player base that you end up constantly wondering things like "What sort of unhinged ba*tard came up with this strategy?" I'll be seeing you in PVP. And Developers that KEEP coming with quality of life improvements and updates that not only make sense, but bring balance or clarification to the gameplay? I'm telling you- Down With The Ship is a labor of love, and it shows. A fantastic game for relaxing enough to watch a show or movie alongside, and engaging enough to lose hours hyperfocusing into until you realize it's 3AM. 10/10.

Wow! This game blends my adult love of auto-battlers with my childhood love of building spaceships out of Legos and having imaginary battles. When you build something that works and start blowing things up, it's a great feeling.
