This game is sooooo good ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. It really nails what makes roguelites engaging. You basically build a complex Rube Goldberg machine of a ship that kills other ships. It's an engaging system with a bunch of different mechanics, and you get random options every round of what you can buy, and you have to balance between getting something that will keep you alive next round, vs something that will contribute towards long term synergy in your build. There aren't really any "trash items" as far as I can tell; for every item that exists, you can think of a viable build that really wants that item. Which makes all the choices really meaningful and interesting. I can't believe this game is supposedly "early access"! I would be leaving a positive review if this was the full release and it never got an update again. You're telling me the game is supposed to get even better?

Fun game, but has some UI problems that need to be improved: - The transitions and animations between screens (end of battle, start of battle, menus dropping and raising) are tiresome and cannot be accelerated or disabled. - The three levels of overlay on the ship - hull, equipment, and gem - are hard to distinguish. Can't see the item beneath the gem in most cases. You cannot move each independently without unstacking everything. You also can't lasso select multiple sections of the hull and items to move and rotate them as a group. - Having to hold shift to every time to see an upgrade is tedious. Upgrades should be shown next to an item in deemphasised text. - Hiding descriptions of unavailable items in the demo version is a terrible idea. I almost didn't buy the full version because I couldn't see any of what was on offer. - You can't see how many grid spaces items in the shop will occupy. There should be a faint grid overlay. - There are not enough item interactions to raise the skill cap of the game. In backpack battles, position, combination, and rotation of items makes a fun puzzle with thousands of possibilities. In Down with the ship, there's none of this. You can even point an engine backwards, or aim a gun into the center of your ship and it's all meaningless and cosmetic. - You should be able to split upgraded items into base components. - The damage taken/dealt lists are still confusing. If a ship has a status effect, like acid, does it mean acid damage dealt to my ship, or acid damage dealt to their ship, if the number is on my ship? - Projectiles seem to attack and damage specific items on the other ship, but I can't see the effect this has or where it's explained or how to control it. - Ship style (color and hull type) are forgotten after every game and must be reselected. This should be remembered per captain.

Down With The Ship is a backpack battler, masquerading as an autobattle game, posing as a roguelike/lite. And that sounds BONKERS. What's truly insane is how it manages to excel in all of these areas. I love roguelikes, Losing IS fun. And DWTS has made it into a spectacle in and of itself. I'm writing this review on release day, because I have over 600 hours into the Demo Version and i'd be damned if I didn't support it on the day of the big reveal. And the Dev's DELIVERED. I mean, kicked the a** of many things. You want varied playstyles, competitive strategies, driven mechanics and interesting combo's? It's here. A player base that you end up constantly wondering things like "What sort of unhinged ba*tard came up with this strategy?" I'll be seeing you in PVP. And Developers that KEEP coming with quality of life improvements and updates that not only make sense, but bring balance or clarification to the gameplay? I'm telling you- Down With The Ship is a labor of love, and it shows. A fantastic game for relaxing enough to watch a show or movie alongside, and engaging enough to lose hours hyperfocusing into until you realize it's 3AM. 10/10.

Wow! This game blends my adult love of auto-battlers with my childhood love of building spaceships out of Legos and having imaginary battles. When you build something that works and start blowing things up, it's a great feeling.
