TL;DR - Worth it for fans of arena fighters and Dragon Ball. Gameplay feels good and it features many (but not all) fan favorite characters. Worth it on a decent discount. Now, here's the thing - I've been a fan of Budokai games since the PS2 era, and they give some nice memories. Sparking Zero is a modernized Tenkaichi (Sparking) game, with updated graphics and combat mechanics. The combat feels fluid, with a few game patches it has gotten a lot more balanced so it can be good fun for competitive players. It can also be played P1vP2 locally, so the level of fun pretty much depends on you. The soundtrack is decent but the anime tracks that you have to purchase individually if you don't buy the Deluxe+ are extremely overpriced. Now the mixed : Online play is connection and FPS dependent, so if your opponent has 40 FPS and you 60 your game will feel like a slow-motion movie. The story mode is quite basic and some characters don't even have complete sagas for them (e.g. Vegeta doesn't even explore most of the Super anime), and there aren't that many cutscenes - you might get some title cards and some overlaid text - the Narrator is also not there most of the time. You can create Custom Battles as well, but it takes a lot of effort and it might be for you, it wasn't really for me. So the single player modes are kinda lacking, and the main focus is on multiplayer/online play. And the main problem of the game is exactly there: the competitive community. People will try to do anything for a win of imaginary worthless online points : exploit the game, lag-switch, disconnect so that they don't lose points.. Unless you can handle such levels of toxicity and "stress", I recommend playing with friends/family for fun. Every online game mode of the game (even Player/Unranked match) is extremely toxic 90% of the time. So why do I recommend it? At the end of the day it's Dragon Ball - a great nostalgic feeling comes when I start it up, it looks good, runs good and even against the CPU it can be a fun challenge. On PC you also get the option to add mods to further increase your enjoyment. It could've been great, ended up being good. Good enough, I guess.

I love Sparking Zero. That's why this hurts. This game could've been something incredible. The foundation was there from day one! However the Devs waited too long to fix obvious balance problems, and by the time those updates finally hit, the community had already died out. Today in my opinion the game is fantastic... but it's too late. The customisation we were promised was never expanded, the roster all be it big never grew the way fans expected, and online is a ghost town unless you bring your own group. It's wasted potential in the purest sense. Fun with friends, but heartbreaking for anyone who hoped for longevity. Solid 7/10

Sparking zero could easily be the best Dragon Ball game ever made, if only the developers had taken more care and fully embraced its potential. I’ve been waiting this game for years, probably over a decade. My favorite Dragon Ball game is Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and I played it a lot. This new game feels like BT3 with Super characters, some minor gameplay changes and unfortunately a few missing characters that really should’ve been added as DLC by now. The story mode was fine, it included some what if scenarios that I really enjoyed. Honestly, I wish the game focused entirely on this direction, because replaying the same story over and over in every game is boring, at least for me. Still, it’s better than nothing. Custom Battle is amazing. I knew right away I’d spend a lot of hours into it, recreating the what ifs I used to watch on YouTube, imagining in my head or discussing with friends. It could definitely be improved, but even as it is, it gives the game infinite replay value for me. Now for the negatives. Online was ridiculously unbalanced at launch and the developers took way too long to fix it, which drove away 90% of the player base. The game desperately needs more gamemodes (like Survival, Mission 100 or additional what if stories) as well as new outfits and accessories for all characters. The customization potential would be incredible: imagine Goku in old Saiyan armor or Frieza dressed as Goku with a saiyan tail. Some characters don’t even have a second outfit, which is unacceptable considering even BT3 gave everyone at least one alternate color. The DLC situation is also very bad. The release time is way too slow. By now, we should’ve had most GT characters, full Daima, and maybe even some unique what if fighters like Gohan Black or Gohkan. Do I recommend this game? Yes but only on sale. It’s still a great Dragon Ball experience and it has the potential to become probably the best. But unless the developers do something, mods are the only way to experience the game’s true potential.

As a man with over 500 hours on this game, I have enough credibility to both glaze and criticize this game. Gameplay is IMMACULATE. Actually requires real skill to be good and come-back potential is insane. Defensive options are extensive and always allows a SKILLED player to destroy anybody. If you match up with another equally skilled player, 9 times out of 10 your fight will feel like Goku VS Cell. This is the most Dragon Ball Z authentic game ever made by FAR. Compared to BT3, this is a completely faithful sequel to that game with HUGE improvements and updated + new mechanics. THE CRITICISM: PLEASE IM BEGGING YOU DEVELOPERS, PLEASE GIVE US MORE CONTENT!!!!!! The downfall of this fantastic game is the LACK OF CONTENT. THERES MAYBE 10 ACCESSORIES (and thats being generous) and you CAN ONLY equip them on maybe 5 characters in the whole roster. Absolutely lacking in costumes, accessories, MAPS, and overall incentives to keep playing the game. Once you reach Z rank, there is literally nothing more worth playing the game for. Its such a god damn shame. Of course this can be fixed and Im still holding out hope that the devs will introduce new costumes, accessories, and overall customization options for characters and new maps in the future. But as of right now, CONTENT IS WAY TOO SMALL. In conclusion: Gameplay: 11/10 - actually feel like you're a super saiyan Content: 4/10 - extremely minimal for a game in the big 2025 BUT CAN BE FIXED WITH UPDATES. Total rating: 8/10
