May 2025
I'm going to slightly recommend this. Overall I had fun, but there are some issues. The annoying stuff Yes, I'm starting with complaints first. First issue: freaking doors! Unlike the previous game where you push the interact button to open and close doors, in 2 you just walk into them. But the door closing physics make it really want to close, so it can be a struggle to open some doors. You're basically just walking into a door that's constantly trying to close in your face. I read in the discussions that limiting the framerate can fix the issue, but I haven't checked. Plus, I once had an enemy block a door from the other side, and it took a lot of manipulation to clear a path. Second issue is that combat (both photography and physical combat) can get really annoying sometimes. If an enemy blocks you in a corner, it's 100% game over. If enemies manage to gang up on you, it's probably game over. And, in one boss fight that I found particularly annoying, the enemy was phasing through walls so much I could barely photograph it to deal damage. I'd just get knocked down a bunch from it popping out of the floor. It looks like the devs gave Linda a lot of health to cope with how aggressive (and IMO unfair) the enemies are, because she can get knocked down over and over without dying. I would rather that the enemies were less aggressive and Linda had less health than get knocked down and get back up over and over. Also, during that especially annoying boss fight I mentioned, I ended up reloading a checkpoint 2 or 3 times, because it just kind of stopped appearing and it seemed like the fight got stuck. Lastly, the epilogue in the "extras" menu saved over my main save, wiping all of my progress. I did get a message saying "this will use the first save slot", but I just assumed that it was going to load that save, not overwrite it! Maybe it's my fault and I didn't read things closely enough, but why couldn't it just prompt me to choose another slot? The good stuff Alright, with those frustrations out of my system, time for the positives. The visuals are absolutely awesome. I love the ghost and monster designs, and the last two chapters are a really trippy and hellish sight. The devs got creative with allowing you to view the world differently through the phone's screen, and even in the prologue chapter you should be surprised by how different things look when taking pictures. I heard that some fans of the first game weren't happy about physical combat (stabbing and chopping instead of photographing) getting added. Personally, I thought it was fun most of the time. To be clear, you don't lose photography combat, and sections with physical combat are separated from sections with spirit photography. The basic strategy is to stun enemies with the phone and then follow up with an attack. What I thought was done really well about this was Linda's animations. She stabs the knife desperately. She puts way too much weight into an ax swing. These animations show that Linda is not a cool-headed badass, but a panicked girl desperately fighting to survive. And one more thing I liked was that we see a bit of normal life throughout the game. Most horror games are just nonstop horrors until the end. In Resident Evil it's zombie after zombie until you escape the city. In Silent Hill it's one twisted location after another. But in DreadOut 2 you actually get to return to normal life a few times, explore the town, and talk to people, in a peaceful setting. And as the story progresses little substories with the people of the town also progress, and they have new things to say or do. The best and most memorable example of this, IMO, is that you visit a hospital early in the game. If you look around a bit you'll see a mother and her son in the waiting room. If you return to the hospital later, you can then find the mother sitting by herself. But if you bring up the phone you can see her son with her, meaning her son is now a spirit. Something as simple as that was surprisingly effective at making the world feel more alive. Last thoughts So, overall, despite my complaints, I liked this. Maybe like a 6 or 7 out of 10. Visuals, scenarios, and experiencing the story were great. It feels like the devs put a lot of love into this, even if the experience is a bit flawed. I would love it a lot more if some fights didn't feel so annoying. I hope they can iron these issues out into a more consistently pleasant experience in 3.

Story: You play as Linda, a high schooler with a smartphone, a deadpan attitude, and a serious ghost problem. Think Buffy the Ghost-Snapper, but with more cultural curses and fewer quips. The story picks up after the first game, but don’t worry even if you're new, you’ll figure it out once the nightmares start showing up in broad daylight. The plot dances between creepy urban legends, cosmic horror, and emotional moments about trauma and legacy. One minute you're dealing with angsty classmates, and the next you're deep in a spectral bloodbath wondering why your school is connected to the spirit realm. Gameplay: A mix of third-person survival horror and action. You exorcise ghosts with your smartphone camera and sometimes just straight-up throw hands. Yes, Linda fights now. The combat can be clunky, but there’s something incredibly satisfying about watching a high school girl roundhouse kick an angry spirit in the jaw. You explore creepy buildings, solve puzzles that may or may not make sense, and get jump-scared out of your chair at least five times per hour. Ghosts show up with zero chill, and the camera fights are as nerve-wracking as ever especially when your flashlight flickers like it's haunted too. Atmosphere: Oh, it’s got vibe. The mix of modern Indonesian settings with supernatural elements makes for some unforgettable environments. Whether you're in a haunted hospital, a cursed alley, or a ghost-infested jungle everything oozes dread (pun intended). The sound design is just as unnerving, with whispers, ambient screeches, and the sudden silence that always means something awful is about to happen. Graphics: Stylized and gritty. It’s not cutting-edge, but it nails the atmosphere. Ghosts are genuinely terrifying often grotesque, sometimes beautiful, always nightmare fuel. Some animations are a little janky, but it adds to the indie charm. Final Thoughts: DreadOut 2 is weird, scary, and full of heart. It mixes Eastern horror with action mechanics in a way that feels unique and brave. Sure, it’s not perfect the combat’s rough around the edges, and the pacing can be wonky but it swings big and often lands.

Just like the first game, it's kind of a mixed bag. Almost 50/50 ratio of great stuff to abysmal bullshit. I love the story and the atmosphere, but most of the combat and hide-and-seek segments feel like a clunky chore.

I love the atmosphere. The graphics are very nice for what they are and there are some very creepy enemies. The combat is very clunky however. That's the only downside I can really think of. You can tell a lot of love was put into this.
