This is another one of those games which are good if we look at them by themselves, and... moot if we compare them to the earlier game. This is the issue with Steam's recommendation system: would I recommend it? Yeah. Do I think this game deserves a bit of backlash for the direction it took after the first game? Absolutely, and I'll explain more about it later. But Steam will just turn all of that into a statistic based on whether people recommend the game or not. So. The Evil Within 2 is a cool, fun horror game. But I'm going straight to the point: it is very far from being as scary and mysterious as the first game was. It's a lot more action-oriented, stealth is busted, and some parts take place in semi-open-world areas. Should I explain that a horror game where you can run into large open areas, where the moment you step into a bush the enemies lose you and you can stab them, is way, way, WAY less scary than a game where you walk through narrow, claustrophobic corridors, with nowhere to hide and very little ammo? It's not just "less scary", it's "not scary." And I find that a bit ironic considering that The Evil Within 1 was made by some former Resident Evil developers who thought the games had become too action-oriented and wanted to make their own game and go back to real horror. And they did it with the first game. It was truly horrific. Now, you're absolutely not scared. In fact, I didn't feel like the prey in this game; I felt like the predator. I felt like most of the enemies were just trapped in here with me, not the other way around. That's actually what happens in the story in a way, because here, Sebastian Castellanos willingly goes into the STEM when he learns that his daughter might still be alive in there and that he could save her. The character completely changed from the first game. He went from a depressed, broody cop who had lost everything and was fighting for his life, to Liam Neeson in Taken, who's coming after the bad guys to save his daughter. It felt way more like a generic Hollywood action movie. Just so you understand my point better: I almost didn't use any bullets in this game, because you can almost always use stealth to stab enemies. In the first game, you were stressed because ammo was scarce and you actually NEEDED it. Here, you don't even need your weapons most of the time. So... why am I still recommending it? Like I said, it's a good game on its own. I liked it. And to be honest, I'm not gonna complain that I was able to relax while playing this game instead of constantly clenching my buttocks. And even though the more linear aspect of the first game worked in its favor when it came to the horror, it was still painfully linear. The gameplay of the second game is really more fun, and it's refreshing to have way more freedom. It's just that it's a shame that they decided to give up the horror identity that was the spearhead of this new franchise and go for more action-oriented gameplay and Hollywood-style writing, where the hero is just a badass guy who wants to kick ass, chew gum, and save his ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ family! You can even feel it in the art direction. Sebastian is literally unrecognizable from the first game; his features are more bland. His clothes are more bland too. The first game had some kind of classic detective outfit, with a noir aesthetic that they completely threw away. Honestly, it felt a bit like a middle finger to the first game.
I couldn't shake the feeling that this was some kind of open world game. Although it's not exactly open world ? The Union feels more like the mansion from RE1 or the police station from RE2. I would have liked an approach like the first game On the one hand it's an open world you run around and collect all sorts of loot and there are even side quests and some are nothingburgers, while others are bangers. There's still a certain vibe that game has, but it feels that the goat Mikami didn't make the second game and thus the vibe of the first game is lost. That feeling of having no clue of what was going on and that Sebastian just happened to get involved into all this mess and he himself also had no idea what was going on, made the whole story feel much darker and more intense. The second game has a completely different tone, with a different narrative focus, It's not worse and it's definitely not bad, just different All in all the game is still a blast. All I said isn't a quality issue at all, it's just that the first and second games are different. I prefer the first one in terms of atmosphere and gameplay, but the second is really really close to the first

Well, compared to the first game, this game lost all of the horror aspects. No, i'm serious. Like, in the first game, you'll mostly feel scared and trapped (mostly because of the map's design itself or by how dark the environment is). This game is more focused on the action and stealthy aspect (seriously. I can save tons of ammo for the last fight because i always do stealth kills on normal enemies). The point is, if you want more action, this is perfect. If you want the horrors, the first one will be better for you
