Long story short, the game does exactly what it says on the tin. It's a bunch of inspirations from Kingdom Hearts and the Holy PS2 Trinity combined very competently. The inspirations from Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy are probably the most apparent in the platforming. The moment I could long jump off of a roll I knew I was in for peak. The game also manages to sneak in references that feel like genuine love letters to its inspirations, rather than nostalgia bait. I have some small nit picks, specifically with verticality. It feels like Zirian's jumps are just a bit too short sometimes, and I often find myself doing simple techs to do high jumps consistently. Additionally, ledge grabs are dedicated to the classic "worn off white scratched ledge". This has been a staple in games for some time now, though it feels jarring in this game, where the platforming is otherwise very free form. It was makes the aforementioned verticality issue worse. Not enough to ruin the otherwise polished experience, but something I'd be glad to see improved in an update or sequel.

Platformer games are nothing new to me, with some of my Nintendo Switch favorites being Super Mario Bros Wonder and Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. first discovered Duskfade when @playerdua and @zidnyman introduced it on their channel. Elements reminiscent of Kingdom Hearts (specifically the protagonist and a weapon resembling the Keyblade) and the legendary "Holy Trinity" of PS2-era 3D platformer Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, and Sly Cooper piqued my interest and made me look forward to its release. I think Duskfade successfully combines stunning visuals, immersive music, and challenging platforming gameplay. The atmosphere and art style are extraordinary the blend of dynamic lighting and a dimly lit environment creates a sense of mystery. The story is conveyed implicitly through environmental storytelling, encouraging players to explore every nook and cranny to understand what is truly going on. For some newcomers, the opening section might feel a bit confusing due to the lack of direct guidance.

Duskfade feels like someone found a lost PS2 platformer, gave it a glow-up, and somehow made it even more charming. It gives so much Ratchet & Clank, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, and Kingdom Hearts vibes. But it doesn’t feel like a copy of any of them. It takes that old-school feeling and does its own thing with it. Nostalgic feeling 10/10. The combat is a 10/10 for me. It’s fast, smooth, and just really fun to play. I honestly didn’t expect the combat to have this much depth from a platformer, and it’s probably my favorite part of the game so far. (Even tho my most used attack would be probably the dash-hit lol) The game is also really beautiful. There’s something about the art style and the world that just feels like a classic adventure game, but with modern graphics. Oh and Cuckoo has the attitude of someone who definitely pays no rent :-)
