TL;DR: Despite being the older Empires game, this is the superior title. It plays like an older warriors title. That out of the way, let me clarify this about the game: It is an old title, and it shows. But unlike its sequel/downgrade in DW9R, this does right what that game does wrong. Walk with me and we'll discuss the pros and cons. Pros 01. The game plays like a Warriors title. This may not seem like something important at first glance, or may even seem like it should be a no-brainer, but the fact that DW9E lost the plot and forgot to make itself into a hack-and-slash, commander focused playstyle for capturing bases and overcoming challenges puts this as a point in the book that needs to be said. 02. Character creation is simple, but good. You aren't getting anywhere near Skyrim, but there are enough options here to have fun with and you can customize your custom character's abilities quite well, giving them a far more unique approach and flair to things compared to the sequel. 03. In Empires mode there are other things to do. Far more in it than DW9E there are many more things you can do. Raise your own kingdom, become emperor (RNG event), be an assassin, be a free agent forever, betray your lord, and so much more. 04. CUSTOM INVADERS. This is something that, somehow, is still running and I don't know how or why. But when you have entire units of others peoples custom characters floating about and entering the game later on as old generic commanders die out or just replaced over time it gives some fun RNG to every Empires campaign. I had the Cat Girl alliance fighting Naruto Ninjas for the Northern half of China. It's hilarious as an option, and a lost one in the sequel. 05. Lastly, it's fun. Nothing more, nothing less, it is a fun game. If you are a fan of older Warriors titles, it is a fun time. Not as fast as some new ones, but you can have some pretty fun battles in it. I had to buy enough time for my armies to take the map and connect the main camp to the enemy's because Lu Bu and five of his boys were trying to rush the opposite way and just rush my main camp and no one but me could handle them. Cons There are some cons. Don't get me wrong. Translation isn't the greatest, some cutscenes and events are woefully incomplete, I wish there were MORE enemies on-screen and this much DLC at these prices are pretty much a crime to me...But if you don't care about the additional cosmetics, don't care about the castle or scenario pack, don't care for the additional edit voices? It's a great game. DLC is fine if you buy it on sale, but I sincerely say only buy the edit parts as that's where you'll get most of the enjoyment out of it. It's better than DW9E, so if you're making a choice between the two I am giving you a whole-hearted endorsement of this game.

if the pc port was better (atleast on Warriors Orochi 3's level where you can make it 1440p and change the confirm button) i would enjoy it more. this game starts off very easy but quickly becomes a huge slog once you get near the end of an empires run. better than DW9E tho. DW7Empires is better and i really wish it was on steam aswell.

it's a good game, less empty than dw9e. you can take quest , raid and join battle as vagabond or free officer. a feature that i missed on dw9e.

DW8E is the peak of the Empires line for Dynasty Warriors. While it lacks some of the immersion that the character interplay has in Samurai Warriors 4 Empires, it makes up for it in depth of customizability. The gameplay is standard DW hack-and-slash, and it incorporates the Romance of the Three Kingdoms style policy decisions from previous installments. Available policies are determined by your Way of Life, which operates as both a strategic style and alignment system. Officers who align closer to your own on a five-tier alignment system will tend to get along with you better. Policies range from practical to idealistic, and from saintly good to dastardly evil. It gives a sense of role play, and with the spouse and sworn sibling systems you can connect at least a little with the characters with whom you're surrounded. The combat, as stated, is the same hack-and-slash you should be here for if you've bought the title. If this is your first time playing, I recommend the easier settings to get an idea of the technical, tactical and strategic flow, but the higher difficulties will pay off for those looking for more of a challenge. The higher difficulties demand better decision making on every level, and there's a solid emotional reward here whether you're looking for a cathartic, heroic playthrough as a demi-god, or a more technical and difficult playthrough as a hardened warrior. The level of customization in the game is incredible. Going above and beyond in this incarnation, you can create hundreds of custom officers, replace both famous and faceless officers, create your own factions, customize soldiers and warhorses, customize banners and import graphics for those banners, and create your own scenarios out of all available content. With downloadable content and import options for other custom content from other players, you won't get the same game twice. The Create-a-Warrior system has good depth, but is still restrictive in colors and costume sets. Some of the sets just feel awkward, though combinations can make almost all of the pieces shine. This is a much better system than what showed up in 9 Empires, in my opinion, as it doesn't have the awkward, layered rendering problems. I'd love a lower/skin level garment (such as socks, shirts, pants, etc.) under armor, or dividing outfits in other ways. Until they give us a solid version of the layered outfits, this is my favorite of the series, and I've made sufficient copies of licensed characters that I can absolutely attest to the available palette of colors and parts. I think DW8E could form the basis of an entire product line of custom strategic games with a little tweaking, and would love to see a game move in that direction. HINT HINT, KOEI.
