It's hard to give this a thumbs up recommendation, but between DW8Empires and DW9Empires, you're better off sticking with 8 Empires. It's actually wild just how much was getting taken out when it came to the Empires franchise. Considering that when 6 Empires came out, you had all of the sound tracks from every single Dynasty Warriors game up to 6. Independent officer were much more fleshed out and gave you an option and reason for continuing on being an independent officer compared to joining an army or starting out as a ruler. Also DW6E had a feature where sometimes you and an enemy officer would engage in a duel. Officers and enemies would encircle you both and wait for either to take the other out. When DW7 Empires came around, not only did it make changes to giving certain officers their original weapons back, but you were given the option to use the feature introduced in DW7 to be able to walk around a town area. There you could talk to officers, npcs, or vendors. DW7E was also the very beginning of the custom scenario options, but with a lot more limitations. Here in DW8E, not only were DLC CAW parts that were in DW7E just pre-baked in, but they also included the option for officers to have children during a campaign. But at the price of that? So many good soundtracks across the various DW games were completely cut out. No such titles like "The men of intelligence", "Sacred Ground Vers 2", "Fate Corrodes Me", Or anything else. And also the feature where you were able to able to walk around town very briefly and interact was also taken out. Presumably, because it wasn't introduced in DW8. With hearing how DW9E completely cuts out the whole "married characters can have children", I am dreading and hesitant with picking up DW9E just to see how many more features and other portions are continuously cut down and removed. How many more fragmented bits and pieces are sold as DLC? And in terms of going through the musou-ish style or ROTK kind of storyline, we've seen them branching out a bit with Wo-long and DW Origins. With news of the DW3 remake, I can only HOPE that Koei Tecmo are retreading old footsteps to remind their team or teach their team what the formula used to be like and how good it was. The disappointing title after disappointing title has not been doing good for any sense of confidence in their produts. That said, while this fun, there are still a lot of hitches and hangups. For one, the PC port, even if you plug in a controller, the button icons are still showing and mapped to keyboard presses. Hope you managed to figure out the presses for yourself.

My first game in the Empires sub-series, played all the others. I got really addicted to this one and I guess you can consider me a convert. I've heard the port isn't good and yeah Koei can be inconsistent when it comes to PC stuff but this game ran perfectly on a steam deck, 60fps no problem. I loved making my own characters and acting out historical fan fiction. Apparently 7 is even better than this one, more complex, so I'll have to try that one next.

This is as far as i am concerned the last Empires game that was ever released in the Dynasty Warriors series. It is also just a fun game, been playing this for years off and on and it is fantastic, that being said, you can see where all the cracks are showing in the foundations of Koei Tecmo with this game. The game has a major difficulty increase that on the surface is almost reminiscent of that you would see in one of the PS2 era games but far worse in a way that would lay the foundations for the spongey enemies you would see in Dynasty Warriors 9 which i find utterly sad. There's also just some very strange decisions being made. This and Dynasty Warriors 7 Empires (a ps3 exclusive) are a prime example of why the saying of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" still ring true today. A lot of the mechanics that have been added post Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires feel extremely derivative and detrimental, and on top of that the way you take over territories of enemy leaders now is just pain dumb. like if i was to give this a rating it would be a 6/10

Has this game grown or become better overtime? No, it is quite outdated. But I only know one other game that can satisfy this niche and that is Samurai Warriors 4 empires. This game allows you create armies of people with different weapons and set them free in the world to take over China.
