My first time playing an Earth Defense Force game. Was really fun, this version is a little janky and not properly optimised as I hoped. It's still a lot of fun though and a tight action shooter.

Played this game a TON as a kid and after playing through it so many times again recently I never get tired of the gameplay. It can definitely be frustrating trying to grind for the higher levels sometimes but its worth it in the end. Overall its for sure a fun game to play and I imagine playing it with friends would be an even better experience.

If you want EDF in the edgy West, this is it. A lot of people don't like this one, but I think it's great. The only other one I've played is 4.1, and a lot of it at that. This one has a very unique flavor that makes it very enjoyable. ---THE GOOD--- - Multi-part missions with objectives give it an immersive feel - Extremely cool bug/robot designs. The Hectors look less goofy than 4.1. - I like the class design, from the Wing Diver's super speed, to the Fencer's blast radius, to the Tactician's turrets and mines. - Vehicle and turret options are frequent, mixing up the pacing - A certain pulse-pounding urgency that comes from it being less of a sandbox and more of a directed experience - Campaign remix - Gritty style, including Steve Blum's voice acting - A more "adult" story involving top secret projects, abandonment, and loyalty - Weapons are often simple, but the goofy ones are still neat. - The tone is a lot closer to the Starship Troopers vibe the series goes for. - Miniboss portrayal is great. When they show up, there's a sudden beat where it makes you want to stop everything and take care of this problem. The whole thing has a certain gravity to it. ---The Bad--- - Fairly short, maybe 5-6 hours for the campaign. In some ways it's nice, like getting to play as other classes sooner. However, it leaves you wanting more. - The ending is sudden, has no buildup, and reeks of the budget running out. - 30FPS. However, this can be easily circumvented with a hex editor. I bought this for like $10, and came away from every gameplay session feeling hype. I think it's well worth it.

Overall tons of fun and a unique take on the EDF formula, definitely worth playing. I like a lot of the additions they made to gameplay like the bugs throwing cars at you or forcing you to sprint in to plant a charge on anthills. On that, sprinting is extremely welcome too. The classes are fun though they're too similar, both visually and gameplay-wise, it's easy to forget which class you're playing lol. The level up / unlock system is good at pushing you to try the higher difficulties before you're completely ready for it, which I think is fun. I don't really know much about graphics but I think it still looks great and certainly was a big step up from EDF 2017 at the time. The VA's mostly on point, there's a few bad line reads but some really good ones as well. Some of the machine guns sound flat to me and the music is really quiet, you can barely hear it even if you turn it up. The biggest let-down though is the length, five or ten more missions would have been perfect and the way it ends gave me Halo 2 flashbacks lol. I can't say for certain but I think a sequel from the same team could have been awesome.
