So, I've played the first chapter and a wee bit of the second - so far, its very janky (I died at one point cuz a cutscene failed to trigger at the end of chapter 1, and I was able to walk into the sky instead until I very suddenly wasn't able to), but I see a lot of potential here. Reminds a lot of Assassin's Creed Odyssey in both gameplay and setting (yes, its in a real period of medieval Turkish history but the opening cinematic makes it pretty clear they're gonna be drawing from the mythology too) and I think with enough time to iron out the jank it's gonna be a pretty good game.
I thought this game would be open world, but it's more linear. So think God of War, but with a heavy sauce of Ghost of Tsushima, in Turkey. The controler scheme though, I've never seen such confusing movement/interaction layouts. Jump and crouch and dodge is the same button? But jump is sometimes also another button.. Aim arrow, no crap, that's the crafting menu that doesn't pause the game, press jump/crouch/dodge and try again. Graphically a nice game though, atmosphere is cool, music works well. I recommend. I've been actively playing for about an hour or two and I like it. Still buggy here and there, some cutscenes are missing or incomplete. I think in a year or so this game will be very good. Update: Okay, five more minutes of playtime and I finished the game. Total gametime: around 2.5 hours. For the 13 or so Euros I paid, it's decent.
I have not played for very long, but here is what I think so far. I think this has a lot of potential. I will say, as someone who rides horses, that the fact that the rider's feet are not in the stirrups when there are stirrups there, gives me a lot of anxiety. I did have the game freeze on me very early on when you encounter the Mongols dogs. I still intend to try playing the game. I do want to know where the story is going. I recommend with reservations-if the devs work on ironing out the bugs, this can be a very good game. I wound up returning the game. It kept freezing and I couldn't make it past the first map. I think there is potential, and if they iron out the bugs I would consider giving it another shot.
I can't wait for the full version of the game. It was so fun getting to play a game in this setting - I loved the codex entries to learn more about Turkish mythology. There are some buggy bits (NPCs walking into walls, some sticky spots), but I'm sure these are getting ironed out. The gameplay reminded me a bit of Ghost of Tsushima (fighting Mongols, following animals, swordfighting etc). The sound design is excellent and the textures are looking nice. Also the devs are super responsive on Steam!
For an Early Access title the game already shows a lot of promise. You can tell the developers have real pride in Turkic history and culture something rarely seen or explored in games outside of the Mongols of Genghis Khan and his descendants. The setting seems to take place after or during the decline of the Turkic Seljuk Sultanate of Rum and the attention to detail in portraying the Oghuz Turks is impressive something I quite enjoy seeing the dynamics of nomadic steppe cultures in frontier zones like Anatolia. The story follows Ertuğrul and his Oghuz Turk Alp warriors which are a part of the the Kayı tribe a tribe that had migrated west from the central asian steppe during the Seljuk expansion west a lineage tied to Oğuz Khan a legendary and semi mythological ancestor of the Oghuz Turks which would later form and found the Ottoman royal dynasty and Empire via Osman I (Ertuğrul's son). The narrative blends tribal honor, divine destiny and survival on the Anatolian/Armenian/Levant frontier all wrapped in Turkic mythology and folklore. I especially liked how the game captures the transition from nomadic tribal life to semi-sedentary tribal stage with constant threats from Mongols, bandits, hidden cults and orders in an area that had constant conflict and was a melting pot of cultures in the old Romaioi Byzantine/Armenian lands in the east before the arrival of the Turks. Game play wise it’s a story focused RPG with cinematic presentation something we don’t see enough of these days. There are simple and limited puzzles, looting, crafting, tribal base-building (not yet fully implemented), skills, attributes and multiple playable perspectives with Ertuğrul as the main protagonist here. Right now everything is in a simplified form for example the skill system only offers four options similar to what we see in God of War's skill system. The combat system needs some polish but the foundations are there to expand upon. Their could be improvement to the mantle system as the W+SPACE on an edge can feel somewhat awkward to climb so the controls can be refined a bit but I sort of understand why they went this route as jump hopping could feel intrusive to the immersion. What stands out is the sense of being a Bey a tribal leader or chieftain and the weight of responsibility that comes with being the sword and protector of your kinsmen. The cinematics, voice acting and atmosphere sell this well it has traditional music, the Turkic language, historical Tamga (tribal seals), historical characters and really captures the tribal bonding, tribal style and life of the 13th century. I’ve already completed the available content and all 13 achievements so far and I’m looking forward to seeing more as development continues. Overall this is a rare gem in Early Access that a history nut like myself can rally behind an ambitious, story-driven RPG rooted in a culture and history that deserves more recognition as well as the nomadic tribal lifestyle. It’s currently a rough gem but with polish it could shine beautifully. If you’re interested in Turkic mythology, tribal survival, mythological divine destinies and history or just want something fresh in the RPG space that is story driven. It’s absolutely worth keeping an eye on.
