May 2025
This review is based on 100% completion and 14.9 hours of gameplay. Recommendation: Would I recommend this game? Yes, I would. It’s not without its issues, but as a one-off experience, I actually enjoyed it. This game is definitely different from your typical Dead Island entries , being in third person and adopting a completely unique style. Honestly, the best way I can describe this game is as a “fever dream.” It’s a weird experience. The first thing most people will notice is the art style, which leans heavily into a comic book aesthetic, with high-contrast colours and bold outlines. I thought this style was really well done and fit the game’s vibe perfectly. For example, when something happens, you’ll see comic-style sound cues like “BOOM!” for explosions or “BZZT” for electricity. It’s unique and executed well. The gameplay itself is where I’m a bit on the fence. While I liked the simplicity, it did feel slow, clunky, and unintuitive at times, which made the game harder than it should have been. My biggest gripe is switching and changing weapons; it’s often unresponsive, requiring multiple presses, and it can easily mess up in the middle of combat, which can be frustrating. I enjoyed the weapon progression, though—the katana felt weaker than I expected, so I mostly used the fully upgraded axe, which felt more effective. The guns, particularly the silenced pistol and AR, were useful but mainly in situations where you aren’t completely overwhelmed by zombies. As for the story, “fever dream” really is the best way to describe it, so I won’t attempt to explain it here. Still, it was intriguing enough to keep me interested, at least for the first playthrough. The progression from start to finish was done well—strange, but effective. The sound design, audio, and music fit well, though there was one part toward the end where my character repeated lines. I’m not sure if that was intentional, but it felt out of place. On New Game Plus, some elements change slightly, which is a nice touch. While I was mainly focused on getting an achievement on this playthrough, the small differences kept it interesting. Overall, it’s a decent game for a one-off experience, but it’s definitely not for everyone and does come with some frustrations. If you can get past those, it’s not too bad. However, I wouldn’t recommend it at full price; wait for a good sale. Since it’s an older title that goes on sale frequently, you shouldn’t have trouble finding a good deal. Achievements: The DLC is required for 100%, but it’s included with the game. There are a good number of missable achievements, so using a guide is recommended. Some achievements can also be buggy, though they’re still obtainable—just a bit annoying to get. The achievements in this game aren’t too difficult. You’ll need to complete two full playthroughs from start to end for 100%. With many collectibles and missables due to areas that can’t be revisited, I’d highly recommend following a guide. I used a helpful guide by ALoneWolf42 on TrueAchievements, which includes step-by-step instructions for the base game and DLC content. You can check it out [url= https://www.trueachievements.com/game/Escape-Dead-Island/walkthrough] here. You can complete almost all achievements—collectibles, kills, and story—during your first playthrough if you plan well. In this game, many enemies don’t respawn, appearing only during mission progression, so focus on kill achievements as you go. Once you complete one, move to the next. For collectibles, if you’re following ALoneWolf42’s guide, check the total count at the end of each mission. A useful tip: after each mission, find a save, exit to the main menu and check your gallery to the guide and confirm you have all collectibles from that mission. Some achievements, particularly enemy-specific ones, can be buggy. For example, the achievement for killing a Bouncer while it’s in the air was glitchy for me and took over ten tries, in the end I got it with the pistol. These specific achievements can be a bit frustrating. Other than that, the achievements are fairly straightforward if you’re following the guide. I am still playing through this, but I am giving this one a recommend as I have been having fun with it. It is fairly linear, but I am digging the story. I got it on sale and I recommend you do the same.

I'm gonna give it a positive cause I love dead island its a good serious way better than dying light, but I want to give it a middle ground cause its both good and bad, the good things are the comic style graphics are really amazing its like playing a comic book game, the music not too bad, I do like the stealth mechanics, but the bad is that characters are so boring even the character you play as Cliff is such a drag in this game give me Sam B any day over this piece of wet cardboard, the story also is very very bad and really confusing I played even new game plus and the DLC I have no idea what went on its like the devs took drugs when making this game, the combat is also terrible and the amount of weapons is stupid, in the other ones you can craft so many awesome weapons and that's another thing you can't craft anymore in this one, I think the reason this got hated is because we were expecting dead island but instead we got this and this does not feel like dead island at all the only things that are apart of dead island is the title, the fact they mention Banoi and also Xian Mei, to be honest at full price its not worth it but at like 90 percent off I guess you can't go wrong, also deep silver be careful who you hire next time

Shame. If this game is a standalone title and not a dead island game, it would probably have better steam reviews and less hate. Not for players looking for more dead island. Borderlands style graphics+little bit of splinter cell?, dead islandish style combat, mystery after mystery which keeps the player engaged from a narrative perspective. The game also switches between light and dark environments to help keep a good pace. The only problem is running kick+finisher is too OP. And combat is a little janky to a new player at first. 8/10. Worth it on a sale to folks who are interested.
