The game's development is progressing too slowly; that's a fact. The average is sitting at around 1.4 decent sized updates per year. That's just unacceptable, and i absolutely understand everyone who's been with the game for YEARS in their feeling of being lied to or ignore. I don't care what's going on behind the scenes, there is NO WAY it's that hard to add a new enemy, weapon or level section semi-regularly. That said, it's also unacceptable to say the game is a rip-off or not worth your time or money. It's 15 dollars. The price of a medium sized meal at wendy's. 15 dollars for an extremely interesting and fun ragdoll-based combat system in a dark gritty dungeon with a sizeable amount of levels and enemies to get through, as well as a really solid arena fighting minigame. If you don't like the combat, that's fine, but telling people to boycott the game or whatever because development is taking a long time is asinine when what is already here is well worth the price.

This game is the most befitting of the Labor of love reward, like dev's got some real dedication. Keep up the work and my great grand children will enjoy playing on launch.

I've been playing Exanima since maybe 2015 when the game first came out. It has come a really long way since then, anyone who has played it that long ago can tell you. Sure, it has been nearly 10 years and there is no sign that Sui Generis--the original game that Exanima was meant to be a 'demo' of--will ever come out, but you'd have to be kind of a dweeb to rate this game down for that. Yes, it's clunky, it has a lot of weirdness to it, but that's the charm of the game. Exanima is one of those games that a lunatic in an art studio locks themselves in for a month to make. It's a project of passion, and it doesn't seem interested in appealing to a mass audience or appeasing investors. For that reason, the game is full of clunkiness, confusing design, and difficult-to-navigate menus. But it's also full of imagination, passion, and dedication. I feel in a market of really crappy one-and-done quick turnover to steal some money from chumps on Early Access 'games', Exanima remains one of the few games that DOESN'T try to scam you. I hope the developers know that many people understand this dedication and respect them for it. This game is like Dwarf Fortress or Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead. Sure, it's a mess in some places, but it's the genuine article, it's purely human artistic expression, not soulless money-snatching trash. If you buy this, you should know that you aren't buying a finished game. You aren't even really buying a game that will ever come out. You're buying the dream of Sui Generis and you're buying the developer's imagination and passion. So, expect a lot of awkwardness and frustration, but also take the time to understand that like all projects of passion, this one is rough around the edges and doesn't care about pretending it isn't.

I waited for this game for 9 years. I gave up waiting. I gave up waiting for Sui Generis a really long time ago too. The game is still great, probably the greatest sword fighting game ever made, has lots of content in the story mode and practically infinitely repayable in the Arena mode. But fuck me man, it's been over 10 years since that Kickstarter. I finished school and graduated from the uni and will probably get married before this releases. If the community had access to the engine, there'd be like 100000 levels and 50 different thaumaturgy schools by now. I'm gonna hope that version 0.9 means that 1.0 is gonna be out before 2030.

EDIT 2: One of the top reviews say that the game is essentially unchanged in the past 9 years. That is an utter f*cking lie. This game has changed ridiculously. Every single update has been massive and often game changing. The person who posted that is an idiot and isnt reviewing in good faith. I have faithfully followed this game for over 5 years as I said below and didnt play it until now. I KNOW FOR A FACT THIS GAME IS MEANINGFULLY AND SUBSTANTIALLY UPDATED. No, it is not abandonware or "a money grab." That is an extremely uninformed and lazy take. The devs posted their updates in the forms and on their website rather than the steam page for YEARS and it lead to this narrative. They dont do that anymore and the updates are much easier to read about now. Its a lazy narrative anyways, saying that this was ever abandoned. Do some research and you will see that almost no game company + its creator cares quite like Bare Mettel. Last little pre-review rant: you will not get more bang for your buck than you do with Exanima. This is a $40 game easily and yet you can get it for $15. Freaking FIFTEEN DOLLARS. That is nothing when you realize how much content there is (and still coming). Ok on to the short review. There is absolutely no game quite like this. Yes there are physics based games but nothing like this. The combat is utterly addicting and I wish there was a multiplayer. Not for me to play, because I suck. No. SO I CAN WATCH THE BLOOD FLOW!!!!! For a great time look up "GilGames" and "TheMain" youtube channels for comedy gold involving Examina and some awesome tutorials. Also, GreyBeard is probably my favorite as far as walkthroughs go for it. Edit (5 minutes later): I waited like 5 years after buying this to FINALLY PLAY THE GAME. I treated it like a fine wine, waiting until that time when it was JUST right to be sipped and ejoyed. I f*cking guzzled the entire bottle after I got a hit. IT TASTES SO GOOD! Seriously though, with it being pretty darn close to full release (compared to the life of the development for its entirety), I figured that this is a good time to finally give it a go, especially after seeing all the positive/exciting content on YouTube that has been coming out the past year. The sense of wonder and satisfaction from discovering everything there is in the game is unmatched: be it from just exploring; getting incrementally better at combat until you are passable then good then--- well Ill let you know when I get past that; to finding all the different enemies and items... this game is just utterly amazing. Its worth every single penny. Buy the game. Examina 1,0 can't get here soon enough! Also, Sui Generis.... to think that Exanima is just the appetizer for the main course that will be Sui Geners. People (the masses) are going to absolutely LOVE this game. I CANNOT WAIT!
