F1 Manager 2024 F1 Manager is a fine game but it's more style over substance. And while I'm enjoying my time with it, ultimately I'd rather play the 10 year old Motorsport Manager than this game. Read on to find out why. F1 Manager 2024 (F1 MGR) is a game in which you build your race car, build and maintain your facilities, train your staff, plan your race day strategies and hope everything goes your way. In the world of F1, there are definitely haves and have nots, so taking a smaller (or new) team and trying to get them to compete with the Big Boys like McLaren and Ferrari is quite a challenge. Frontier does a good job of capturing the flash, pomp and circumstance of F1, known as the richest sport in the world. You'll compete over many races across the world, with different tracks offering different challenges to your car. You'll have to change your setup, tire approach ("Tires Win Races" - Harry Hogge, Days of Thunder) and know when to go for it and when not to on race day. Sometimes, saddled with a car that's just not working right it's better to lay off and take what you can get without pushing your people and equipment to the max. There's always the next race...that is, if the Board doesn't fire you first. The game is presented in a very high-gloss fashion with good graphics and slick menus, leaning into the richness of F1. If there's any area where this game has a major edge over Motorsport Manager, it's here. It's prettier, sounds better and has a lot more flash. Unfortunately, the UI is a confusing mess of buttons and layers. In an effort to present a slick interface, it's just overblown with not much depth on any given screen. A case in point is just building your facilities. Instead of one screen that has facility upgrades, there are 3 unnecessary tabs with different types of facilities (and no real visual representation of them either). That's just one example and I could provide a dozen more where the interface is just too bloated. They went for a Football Manager-sized interface without nearly the depth of options that makes such a large interface needed. And that brings me to the next issue. Depth is lacking throughout the product. Everything from facility building to research to car setup to driver management is fairly surface-level. Part development has more welcome depth but that's one of the few areas that does and there's only 5 types of parts to develop. If your driver has a bad race - and one of mine hit every damn thing on the track one one race - there's no way to interact with that driver. over what happened. There's no interaction with the Board like being able to reset expectations or ask for additional funds. And that's the thing - that lack of depth is pervasive throughout F1. When you're setting up your car for races you have 5 different things you can change (front and rear wings, camber, roll and toe), each on a fairly basic slider with about 8 options. Motorsport Manager had 6 settings and each had more options on the slider. Why a game that came out 9 years before this one has better options in such a critical area shows that Frontier just didn't put time into the depth of simulation. With a style-over-substance approach race day feels almost perfunctory. I always felt like my race day strategy really mattered in MM. Weather was a much bigger factor in MM. I felt pit timing was more important. The presentation is nicer, with great views of the action and announcers talking about the action. There are crashes but unfortunately cars don't break apart in a visual spectacle. But the tracks look great, the sounds are good and if you're into watching the racing action you'll probably be happy. I'm really not, so I used the 16x speed a lot. F1 is a decent and entertaining game. I didn't run into any crashes or any bugs I was aware of. It looks good and it's easy to learn. If you're a big fan of F1 racing you're going to like the real teams, the colors, the real drivers and the pomp and circumstance of F1. If you're not really into F1, I think MM is a slightly deeper product with a simpler interface. I don't think it's worth anywhere near the $45 they're asking for it. I don't think the depth is there and it's not holding a lot of people's attention for long - only 1/3rd of the owners of F1 have even completed a single season. I probably got this for around $8-$10 and I feel like that was a pretty good deal. I've played a season of it but I'm unlikely to play a 2nd season whereas I've put almost 100 hours into MM. 10/10. This game is always going to have a special place in my memory because I basically lived in it during the first month of my son’s life—I spent so many early mornings just sitting there holding him tight to keep him asleep with one arm while managing the team with the other, which was actually super convenient since you can easily play one-handed. As someone who's been obsessed with F1 since I was 6, it hooked me immediately, though I have to admit that by season 3 I became such a ridiculous dominator that the challenge kind of died and I was just there to farm achievements, but it’s still an awesome game that I'll always associate with those quiet mornings.

Since this is probably the last we'll see of F1 Manager i just wanted to thank Frontier for their incredible work on this game and the subsequent patches and updates they've released throughout the life of this game. They've added custom rosters which is kind of a sunsetting of the game but in the best way. The management feels good and even though there are some cheeky mechanics you can use to your advantage, it still doesnt feel overly easy to succeed. Mods make this game even better and i love that mods wasn't a thing they went and tried to patch outright like some other devs and publishers like to do (EA).
