game is fun and enjoyable but holy crap is it depressing. The world is a frozen hellscape and there is this inner voice schizo thing that is constantly discouraging you. Its just not enjoyable in large doses. The game is anxiety/depression inducing.

I have very mixed feelings about this game. I give it a recommendation because I did enjoy it. I got it on a good discount and thought it was worth the money I spent on it. But it has it's issues and you have to be patient with it. It doesn't live up to it's full potential and that is disappointing. Fade to Silence is set in a frozen post apocalyptic world where the player and a handful of other survivors that you find must struggle to survive in a harsh world filled with eldritch monsters and a deadly cold. You are constantly haunted and berated by a wraith figure who torments you and resurrects you when you die to continue the torment. You build a refuge with the other survivors and have to defend it against periodic and increasing attacks from the monsters. You constantly need resources to survive, and these resources are permanently depleted as you gather them, forcing to the player to push further into the frozen wilderness to get what you need to survive. You need to drive out the monsters to gain the resources they guard, having to capture strongholds from them so you can get even further into the frozen environment. You eventually discover the mysteries of the wraith and what caused the apocalypse. This feels like it's 90% of the way to a really good game, but just didn't cross the finish line. As if the development was cut short without putting the finishing touches on it. There a lot of low level bugs that would have simple fixes that the player will encounter frequently. You will be inconvenienced by bugs, you will lose loot because of bugs, you will take damage because of bugs and you will die because of bugs. They seem to have fixed the really game breaking bugs that I've seen others report, but there's still a lot of little ones all over the place and you will experience them from time to time. Stuff like: cutting down a tree and seeing flying up in air due to dodgy physics and sometimes not coming back down, getting stuck in terrain and being unable to move, loot being tossed into unreachable places, a few loot items on the map are spawned in unreachable places, game sometimes not accepting movement input for 1 to 2 seconds after you exit a loot container or destroy a hive (lethal if the trash moon is dropping cars on you), taking damage and even being killed while a cutscene is playing (trash moon dropped cars on me when I found a wolf. I thought it was funny seeing the cars hitting all around during the cutscene of Ash reuniting with one of his lost wolves, but when the cutscene finished I was dead). And it's not just the bugs that make it feel unfinished. There's also a lot of simple quality of life improvements they could implement but just haven't. There's a bunch of issues with balancing. The base attacks never felt like a real threat, just a minor annoyance that made me return to base at specific times. There's a conflict with how the story is given through dreams that you get during resting while the game mechanics pushing the player forward to get more resources as soon as possible disincentivise resting. This can cause you to miss most of the story content. The story finishes abruptly with a cutscene without any real final boss or showdown with the wraith which I found disappointing. I was hoping I'd finally get the extreme satisfaction from destroying the trash moon after it's been dropping cars on me all game, but sadly it doesn't happen. There's some highly questionable design choices as well. For example there's a high level enemy called the stalker that excels at ambush attacks and is hard to escape from. They are a good enemy for the later areas as they keep you on your toes. Someone thought it would be a good idea to put a couple in the starting area. This honestly feels like they only put them there to troll new players and force early deaths. They are the kind of enemy that feels impossible to fight until you figure out how they work, but until then you will die to them a lot. Early players will often be outright killed without even knowing what's happening or even properly seeing the enemy that killed them, just a black mist zooming through them. I'm sure there are people who have rage quit and uninstalled because of this. The combat is decent, but it's got it's issues. The lock on mechanic is good when fighting a single enemy, but against groups it gets annoying. The camera zooms in too much and you can't move it while locked on, so it makes you at risk of other attacks, like other enemies or the constantly spawning bombs that are near hives or the trash moon dropping cars on you. The enemies feel challenging at first, sometimes even unfair, but they each have a strategy that makes them easy to beat. Once you figure that out, they do start to become repetitive, but there's often other factors, like groups or the trash moon showing up, that complicate things enough to stop it getting boring. It could use a few more common enemies for variety. The early game feels very difficult at first with a constant strain on limited resources and trying to survive in the harsh world, but this difficulty doesn't persist through the game. It drops off around the start of mid-game. You get plentiful resources and can craft decent (namely copper) equipment and good consumables, even more lives if needed. You've figured out the most common enemies mechanics so combat is not as dangerous and you don't die as much. And while there are harder versions of the common enemies late game and more of them, they don't really scale well with your equipment level, making it a bit too easy. The only things that will kill you at this point are bugs, recklessness and the occasional new enemy until you learn how they work. Which gets me to the last issue: permadeath. This game is supposed to be built around this concept and references cycles repeatedly. You find many bonuses in the form of shards which improve your stats and boons that let you choose from some powerful bonuses. The catch is that they only apply after permadeath. The idea is supposed to be that you make it so far before the environment grinds you down and you come back stronger and get further each time. But because the difficulty drops off around mid-game and you steamroll to the end, you don't really experience this. It kinda ruins the idea and most players will try to avoid permadeath at all costs to avoid losing game progression when the permadeath is supposed to be a part of the game progression. The mechanic needs a bit more work to flesh it out so players are pretty much forced to get the permadeath boosts in order to progress. The wraith is supposed to be tormenting you with endless cycles after all and there are plenty of people who finish it without ever experiencing permadeath which defeats part of the point of the game. All that said, the game is enjoyable to play. The environment feels great. You really feel like you're in a post-apocalyptic world struggling to survive. The blizzards are a real threat and the game mercilessly punishes recklessness and lack of preparation. The story and characters are immersive and there is a consistent theme of moving on from loss and past mistakes. The narrative is dripped out slowly keeping up the mystery very well. The trash moon looming over the world is very imposing and having to dodge the cars it's dropping down on you from above is an experience, especially when it can show up at inconvenient times. The threat of permadeath does make dying more consequential and the threat of defeat more real, rather than many other games where you can just reload at a checkpoint. Overall I would rate it about a 6 out of 10, with the potential to be a 8 or even 9 with a bit more work by the developers to fix the bugs and other issues to bring out the game's full potential. A good pickup if its on a sale if you want a post apocalyptic survival game that is a bit different from most and are willing to be patient with it's issues.

Not the best co-op/multiplayer experience, but a fun game all the same.

9 / 10 Great, but there are lots of flawed decision making. Eg. finite resources, Permadeath, and a slilly sequence full of jank where you have to risk everything on jumping from ledge to ledge right at the end of the game!
