This is a good game and I enjoyed my time playing it. Not perfect as it's maybe a bit bland and lacks real originality, but it's still fair on the strategy, campain management and volume of content proposed. It's really worth giving them their money and support this kind of AA game for their work. Random thoughts: ++ Fixed damage, zero output randomness (finally a game without frustrating RNG!!!) + Fortification defenses + Charge/shoot = initiative + Covering fire + Spots on the battlefield for bonuses + Flying units + Wounded, dead, and restored + Encampments for restoring: why not, create front lines and replacements + Map region and sector are the same + XP and items for each regiment, a bit of RPG why not +/- The campaign is looong, scenario predictable and shallow - Roman Empire/UD vs. Picts/Vikings. Not very original - Weird archer system - Repetitive and uninspired music - The DA as a whole is "meh": clean but very banal - Resource mechanism (gold and weapons/armor/magoc) a bit annoying: putting pressure on grinding instead of strategy - Mortality is useless because you can easily restore with gold later

Overall a good game. Like most Slitherine games it is not heavy on strategy, or even tactical decisions, than just making sure your army moves the right units at the right time in the right direction because the enemy just sits around and waits for you for the most part. Still has elements of fun, but you can't help but feel the enemy is either really really lazy or just kind of slow in the head.

Gameplay Mechanics: 8/10 Narrative: 6/10 Graphics: 7/10 Sound and Music: 7/10 Replayability: 5/10 Innovation: 6/10 Fantasy General II brings back the classic hex-based tactics of the original game with a solid modern revamp. It’s a turn-based fantasy strategy title that knows its niche—tight tactical battles, solid unit progression, and just enough RPG flavor to keep it interesting. Gameplay mechanics are the highlight. The combat is tactical and satisfying, with plenty of emphasis on terrain, flanking, morale, and unit synergies. Each unit type has its role, and the addition of hero units with gear and leveling adds a light RPG twist. The campaign features varied objectives, and while some missions drag a bit, overall the flow of combat and progression is solid. Score: 8/10. Narrative is passable. It sets the stage with some political and personal stakes, and there are occasional choices that branch the campaign slightly, but the story won’t leave a lasting impression. Score: 6/10. Graphics are respectable. The hand-painted style gives the world some visual flair, unit models are clean, and the battlefield has enough detail to keep things readable and immersive. It’s not flashy, but it looks good for a mid-tier tactics game. Score: 7/10. Sound and music do their job. The fantasy soundtrack fits the mood, and the combat effects are satisfying. Nothing especially memorable, but nothing distracting either. Score: 7/10. Replayability is limited. While there are some branching paths and optional side content, the campaign plays out largely the same each time, and unit choices don’t dramatically shift gameplay. Once you’ve seen the core content, there’s not a huge reason to return. Score: 5/10. Innovation is moderate. It does a good job modernizing an old-school tactics formula, but it doesn’t bring much new to the genre. The RPG-lite systems are familiar, and there’s little in terms of bold mechanical leaps. Score: 6/10. In summary, Fantasy General II is a fun, focused tactics game that delivers satisfying combat and a nostalgic fantasy feel. It doesn’t offer a ton of replay value or innovation, but what’s here is well-made and enjoyable for fans of hex-based strategy.

Such a great game, it's a shame I overlooked this for so long, this is an hidden gem if you like deep challenging turn based wargames without rainbows or childish stuff inside. I was looking for exactly this type of granular PC game with serious classic fantasy art style, you can also disable enemies scaling which is another very nice feature. I had to get the Complete edition soon after I tried the base game because for me this is already a super underrated game.

FG2 is a reboot of the classic Fantasy General. It falls somewhere between Panzer General and Fantasy Wars / Elven Legacy, playing as a hex-grid wargame with a bit of story gluing things together. There are "hero" and regular units, which level up over a series of about twenty missions in a branching campaign. Regular units have an upgrade tree that can change them significantly, e.g. from melee to ranged, while heroes gain various abilities. All units can get "promotions" that provide minor enhancements, like more health or speed. Campaign mission maps have primary objectives, but also have a collection of resource nodes. Finishing the scenario quickly will net you some extra gold. There's a balance to be struck between being thorough and being fast, though the bonus resources are usually more important. Proper use of terrain is important, as certain terrain reduces damage from missiles or prevents enemies from charging into you. Units are comprised of 1-10 individuals, which can be wounded or killed independently, making it possible and useful to weaken enemies. Resting for a full turn restores the wounded but not the dead, which can only be restored by spending money or finishing the scenario. Combat is typical for this sort of game, with very little RNG involvement. The only exception is the "retreat" mechanic, which allows certain units to flee from attacks. One consequence of this is that ranged units are often better employed for finishing an enemy than softening them up. The AI is solid. If you leave a unit in a bad position, it will get shredded. The only example of bad play I saw from the computer on "normal" difficulty was a somewhat careless use of siege weaponry. This is a great title for anyone who enjoys "light" wargames.
