If there was a mixed feelings option on Steam that I could use, I'd put it. I'll note that this is more of a rant than a review, by the way. The TLDR is this: The game is decent, though I wouldn't recommend it unless you're a very big Fate fan to be able to see through all its flaws. Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star. It's rough. Has a lot of good parts but is still rough and feels unpolished. I'll start with the mechanics. First of all, Do NOT play this game without a controller. I didn't know this and tried to play it with keyboard & mouse, and I couldn't even get past the character naming part because there was no keybind to continue. Whatever. Let's talk about Code Casts. Basically, you can equip armor, and when you go into a battle, there'll be some abilities you can do with keypad presses that are shown on the top left of your screen. The concept is cool, and I liked it, but most of the abilities are completely useless because of other mechanics that I will get into. It's an incredible fumble on their part. You will quickly realize while you play the game that there's no point using anything other than the ones that give you immunity to an element. Why? Sector traps. On the map you'll see elemental icons next to sectors. When you enter a sector that has one of them, while you're in that sector, at some point you will get attacked by the trap. They do a RIDICULOUS amount of damage, and the ONLY way to counter is by using a Code Cast that correlates to the trap. This means that if you don't want to lose your EX rating, or straight up DIE, you will prioritize Code Casts that can block those elements. This is why the entire Code Cast system is a fumble. Stuff like Collector/Decoy/Offense up/Defense up are pointless and could get you killed if you aren't using an element immunity Code Cast. The only other useful one is the one that instantly gives you Moon Drive, but you'll barely find any Code Casts that give it, and even if you did, you might not even use it because of these Sector Traps. Install Skills are nice, I guess? They basically are upgrades that you can put onto your servant. Your servant will usually have 1 slot only at the start, and when you level up their Bond, they'll get more slots. There's not much more to it. There's a good amount of Install Skills, but most of them are useless and there's no room to experiment a unique build with these Install Skills. Not that you have any reason to, anyway. Okay. One of the most important mechanics in this game is the Extella Maneuver, but I'll give a light elaboration on Moon Drive. Moon Drive is an orange meter that every character has that basically supercharges you and lets you do a zillion damage. There's not much to it besides the fact that it's ridiculous because of how much defense and damage you get. There's been MANY times where I've beaten servants just off light attacks with it. Now, don't think that the Moon Drive's overpoweredness only applies to you. I swear to god, these servants have their damage multiplied by 20x when they have it. They do 2 attacks, and I'm dead on the floor. They can spam it a shit ton too. "How do you counter this???" is something you may be asking. You run away until it's over, or using the actual holy grail of the entire game, The Extella Maneuver. It's ridiculous how overpowered this is. There's a meter with blue squares that fill up when you deal damage, and when you press the button, you'll do a charge towards the enemy. Simple. What makes this so overpowered is that it does INSANE AOE damage, plays a little cutscene where the enemies can't do anything, and *the AI cannot counter it*. Your strategy, pretty much all the time, is to spam the maneuver every chance you get against servants. Hell, do it against the normal enemies, too, if you want. Now, let me put you on a secret. When you use it, there'll be some quick time event that tells you to press the maneuver button again. Don't. Trust me, don't. There's no point in doing it other than farming combo. It's better to just let the maneuver play and then press the button again. You will be able to conserve meter while doing more damage. The Extella Maneuver is so overpowered that I've seen people consider replaying through the game without using it. Trust me, they're not even exaggerating. You will be able to stun lock pretty much anything, and it does AOE damage, so you can farm the smaller enemies, too. Nice! Let's move onto the Noble Phantasms. I've seen people hate on how you use/get them, and I think it's whatever. Basically, there'll be points inside of sectors that will give you Circuit Phantasms. You need 3 of them to use a Noble Phantasm. There will only ever be 2-3 that spawn inside of a map. Sadly, since the maneuver is so strong, you might not even need to use the Noble Phantasm most of the time. Plays a cool cutscene, though. There's really not much to say besides the fact that they've been overshadowed so hard by the maneuver. We'll just move on. The enemy servants are just annoying. You'll fight them for a little with your combos, then they'll use their Moon Drive, and then you realize you're not cut out for this and start spamming maneuver. That's it. Despite how interesting the servants are in Fate, only TWO servants do ANYTHING. The first one is Gilgamesh, and they decided to bless him with a very unique mechanic. When you're in a battle with him as one of the enemy servants, he will randomly decide to use his Gate of Babylon to start damaging a sector. That's all he does. It's cool, honestly, and I was left wishing that more servants did something unique. The other servant that does anything unique is Archer EMIYA. Do you wanna know what he does? He plays his theme. That's all he does. I genuinely chuckled typing this out. These are the only servants that do anything. Also, none of the servants will use their Noble Phantasm, so it's just Moon Drive and their light/heavy attack. Okay. We can talk about the story now. I thought it was good. It's pretty much just a visual novel, and then you'll get put into a battle. There are 3 arcs + 1, with Nero, Tamamo, and Altera. I won't say much about the story because I don't feel like there's much to say about it at all. The twists are cool, and I almost teared up in Altera's arc. The last thing I'll talk about is the content and achievements. If you're going for 100% like I am, it seems easy but actually has A LOT of stuff to do. Thing is, most of it is repetitive and tedious. Like, to get all the Code Casts for the achievement, you have to get all 17 servants to level 30 Bond. I'm not sure about the other people that have played through this game, but I didn't even get a single servant to AT LEAST Bond 25 when I finished the story, so it's kind of rough. You can level up bond for the other servants by doing side missions during battles or by using Code Casts on your servant to farm bond after a certain amount of uses. Whatever though, I like Fate enough to do this and I didn't expect 100%ing a game to be simple and fun. By the way, It feels like 8 people have played this game, EVER. This game BARELY has any online presence. I had to find out the saber secret & the fact that Code Casts level up your bond when you use them off what feels like 1 / 2 guides ever made on Extella. That's all I have to say about this game. Despite all I've said, I think the game is decent. For my final parting words: When you're done with the story and want to 100% the game, level up Gilgamesh or Saber and choose one to play. These are the 2 strongest servants. I prefer saber, personally. Now, complete the very, very last stage on Very Hard EX to get the Obliteration Prism and the Conquerors Greatsword. Use those code casts. The Obliteration Prism will give you 4 slots of 8-10 of element immunity, and the Conquerors Greatsword will give you a slot with THREE instant moon drives and an offense up slot. Use them. Good luck.
