It has Full Stereo 3D, Head-Tracking and Motion Controls. The mod is easy to install as well. Flower VR has never been more immersive to play. I would say it's the best way to experience Flower. Looks great & runs well enough on my RTX 5090. Journey will be coming soon to VR as well. I bought this game! What a quintessential PSN game. I’d always see it when browsing the PlayStation store and never got round to playing, maybe because there’s no guns or hidden blades. Having now completed Flower, I feel blessed. THE FUTURE WE WERE PROMISED? It’s interesting that Flower had never crossed my path before. I got really into the Frutiger Aero scene over the last few years and never saw any mention of this game, despite it being off the Frutiger Aero charts. Originally released in 2009, Flower was developed and born in the Frutiger Aero golden age of corporate skeuomorphism and logos with gradients. It’s incredible. The first level is excellent evidence of this. Saturated, rolling hills under a vibrant blue sky. It’s Microsoft’s Bliss wallpaper brought to life on the PS3. And the music creates a distinct Ghibli response in my heart thanks to the trilling piano keys and playful strings layering over the beautiful sprawling fields. It reminds me of similar sights in Spirited Away or Howl’s Moving Castle. So vibes wise, definitely worth a pickup. The game has a genuine healing energy - something you might find in Wanderstop or Celeste. If you approach Flower with free time and an open mind, it might just fix you. HUMANS BAD. I KNEW IT! Like most titles in the Thatgamecompany catalogue, the story is really up for interpretation. Are we reviving a dead city with nature? Are we playing as the memory of a flower that once bloomed free? Is the whole thing a dream of this person with flowers on their windowsill? Who knows. Like Journey, there’s a rising, climactic ending and an ethereal feeling blanketed over the whole game. You get a scary level in the middle and lots of flowy levels either side of it. There’s even a feeling of ‘ascension’ toward the end, just like Journey as well. Hmm, I’m seeing a lot more Journey DNA in Flower than I thought I would. IMPRESSIVE TECH? Flower feels like a tech demo that grew legs, but in a good way. There’s thousands of blades of grass reacting to the wind that I’m sure were impressive at the time, in the PS3’s middle era. Of course, The Last of Us would come smashing in a bit later and make grass look the prettiest it ever had but for a smaller studio, Flower is impressive... I guess. I’m not a 3D modeller or graphics dude so perhaps you can’t trust me but in any case, the game looks pretty! I really did enjoy the physics of the flower petals. Each petal you pick up adds itself to the invisible wind tunnel that the player controls, and the shape that the petals take almost looks like it could be alive. It was anthropomorphised like the ocean in Disney’s Moana. I could shape these petals and make a twirly blob with my ‘body’, but after I blink and rub my eyes, I’m still just controlling a smattering of petals. The animalistic illusion comes back throughout the game though. Man, such a quirky PSN game. PLAY IT Perfectly fine game. Relaxing and cozy and worth an afternoon of play if you’re kinda bored. However, if you’re seeking some true healing or heart-slowing experiences, then you definitely want to play it. Frutiger Aero Game/10.
Flower is one of those games you play when you just want to relax and vibe for a while. Flying through the air while controlling petals feels incredibly smooth, and the soundtrack combined with the visuals creates a really calming atmosphere. There’s barely any traditional “gameplay,” but the short experience is memorable and beautiful.
This is an extraordinary experience. Note experience and not game. The first time I played this game, I zipped about. Flowers bloomed and I was like "So, what is the fuss about". I saw the beauty and sound and graphics but thought, "there really is not much here". The second time was following the death of my mother. As the head of house I believed I had a responsibility to the family to manage my grief. At night, when the family was asleep, the gravity of realizing that going forward I would have no parents and no siblings weighed down. It was there I played again. I was the breeze, the flower petals. Drifting about. Seeing glimpses of beauty. It was then that the game revealed itself. I intellectually understand that I triggered something in the computer code. Emotionally, it provide peace in my solitude. Creating small bits of beauty, which is really all we can do anyway. A time of grief transformed to gratitude for a life well-lived. While I understand this review is influenced by where I was as a person, the fact that a computer game could meet me in that space is objectively extraordinary by any measure.
