It begins like a haunted tale and ends like a detective novel. A mystery without much fear can easily feel flat, but this game fills that gap with sharp, meticulous detail.

I was pretty sure there wasn’t going to be another great point-and-click adventure released this year. I mean, I’d already been extremely satisfied with Elroy and the Aliens, The Drifter, The Biggleboss Incident, and Slender Threads (and extremely disappointed with Rosewater, which I’d been waiting for for years). But man, I was in for a surprise. I knew absolutely nothing about Foolish Mortals and bought it simply because it was a point-and-clicker. I launched the game just to check it out briefly and couldn't stop playing it for two days. At first, I felt strong Gabriel Knight vibes; eventually it settled somewhere between Broken Sword and Monkey Island. The story is not the most mind-blowingly original, but the game is packed with interesting and funny dialogue. What really got me hooked, though, were the puzzles. None of the modern point-and-click games I've played this year offered such great puzzle design, so close to the genre’s classics from the 90s. There are plenty of items to collect and very logical ways of using them to solve puzzles. Furthermore, the game has an incredibly cool puzzle design where you often have to reuse already-used inventory or environment items in a slightly different way later on. Oh, and the way the game world unfolds is brilliant, too. First you get to explore different locations on the island, then you’re confined to a huge manor with plenty of rooms and characters to interact with, and finally both the manor and the island are unlocked together, with added locations and changes to the existing ones. Honestly, I haven't seen anything done this nicely for ages. Finally, the game has incredibly cool animations that I don't see today even in many big-budget games. For instance, when you fill a water bottle with water from the tide, you can literally see the character tilt the bottle and hold it, waiting for the moving tide to come closer and gradually fill that bottle. I’ve experienced one repeatable bug later in the game (where the game would lock and it was only possible to Alt+F4). Luckily, the place where it would trigger was no longer necessary to progress the story. Otherwise, the game is an absolute masterpiece. I really hope Inklingwood Studios makes more games in the genre. Hell, the previous game that I've played, enjoyed, and completed was a AAA - Ghost of Yōtei - and I can easily say that I enjoyed Foolish Mortals much more than that. What an absolute treat!

I wasn’t a Kickstarter backer, but I’d been eagerly waiting for this game’s release. From the screenshots, the visuals looked absolutely stunning, though I worried the gameplay or story might not live up to the art. Thankfully, I was wrong. Foolish Mortals clearly draws inspiration from beloved classics of the point-and-click adventure genre such as Gabriel Knight and Monkey Island, keeping those same rich motifs of voodoo, mystery, and the supernatural. You play as Murphy McCallan, a young auditor who travels to Devil’s Rock in search of the lost treasure of the Bellemore family. There he uncovers the tragic tale of a wedding that ended in the disappearance of all the guests, including the wealthy hosts themselves. As Murphy explores the island and meets its eccentric inhabitants - including the obligatory swamp-dwelling Witch Doctor - he soon discovers that solving the mystery will come at a heavy price, possibly even his own life. The game is filled with witty dialogue, clever wordplay, memorable characters, and the kind of creative puzzles that occasionally make you scratch your head in the best possible way. The soundtrack is also wonderful, featuring an original song that I’m absolutely going to obsess over soon. For me, this is a modern classic of the genre, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to every adventure fan. It’s a joy to be reminded that we’re living through a real renaissance of point-and-click adventure games, with gems like this proving the genre is more alive than ever. I can only hope we’ll see many more titles from this talented team.

WOW. Just... Wow. I've only reviewed four(!) of the 700 games in my library, but after just having started chapter 2 in this game I felt the urge to shout out to every fellow adventure game fan to BUY THIS GAME NOW. I'm sitting here in awe with a huge grin on my face after just having seen the most amazing musical act in an adventure game ever. To the devs, I hope you're reading this: Thank you. I'm at a low point in my life, so I can't even remember the last time I had this feeling of joy that I just experienced. I just wanted to get this out there quickly, to get as many people to enjoy this game as I can. I will update this with a more complete review after I've finished the game.

For fans of "point & click" adventure games like Broken Sword, Monkey Island etc. Beautiful artwork, fantastic voice acting and soundtrack so far! The care and love for the genre really shines through in this one.
