There's a lot of mention of XCOM but in my opinion the better and more direct comparison is to Games Workshop's famous Blood Bowl boardgame. There are a good deal of similarities and some meaningful differences, but fundamentally both games are alike in the sense that they are turn based sportsball games where you manage the development of your team over the course of a season, trying to finish as well as possible in your various club, cup, and related competitions. This game does have quite a bit of depth and it's a ton of fun to play. The initial season in the amateur league is pretty straightforward, but especially in your first playthrough, you'll find the challenge pretty quickly escalates. Unlike XCOM and its incredibly unfair (at times) RNG, there are four different types of RNG options in Football Tactics and Glory, meaning you can tailor your experience to your preferred degree of masochism. Overall it's just a super fun game and one I can see myself returning to frequently going forward.
I realised I never wrote a review for this game, despite thinking about it multiple times... Oops. Football, Tactics & Glory is a game I would really recommend to anyone who like tactical games, even if they aren't really fond of football. This is because at its core it is a very finely crafted game, with core mechanics that are extremely solid. While some of the most obvious aspects are simple and easy to understand, once you dig a bit the game shows its depth, and it's not easy to piece things up immediately. Thankfully the game has a very handy tutorial that will cover a lot of the mechanics. Although in some case, it may take a bit of time to really understand what the tutorial is trying to teach you. Still, while you may stumble a bit at first, once things start to click, which doesn't take that long, playing the matches and managing to outplay stronger opponents via a judicious use of your players and their skills is extremely satisfying. The management aspect is also present, and while it is overall simplified(You are nowhere near what Football Manager will ask of you in terms of crazy spreadsheet simulator, which is a good thing), it still demands you to juggle with contracts, facility expansions and upgrades and the transfer market. You will need to have both short term and long term visions to really succeed. In essence, it's a game that tickles both your tactical and managerial brain in very positive ways, and to me that hits all the marks. It's also notable that you are expected to meet losses at some point. There are opponents you simply won't be able to beat, and others you will lose to because of certain formations they use or because the dice rolls won't be favorable. This is fine. There is always the next match, the next season, and as long as your club stays in the green, you will always end up stronger, until you can finally defeat your rivals. The progression, while sometimes slow, is gradual. The only flaws I would note is that the game may be a little too stingy when it comes to giving you prestige, used to purchase upgrades and use a lot of coach "powers" so to speak. In addition to that the fact the cost is incremental for upgrades no matter what you pick means that it's ill-advised to upgrade the medical facilities due to their impact on the long game being a lot less valuable. Because of that too, footballer injuries can be absolutely crippling if playing with your own player-made club. Meanwhile any club you may join starts with upgrades in it already paid for as well as others. I really wish something was made to make the medical facilities more appealing on the meta game to justify the cost of its upgrades. It's especially gruelling when you have to pay some crazy costs for said upgrade(in normal or hard difficulties) while the AI teams already have the upgrades themselves since day 1. Catching up to the Premier League champions in terms of infrastructure and player quality can take over 12 to 20 sucessful seasons. This can lead to a feeling of grind when trying to bridge the gap, which is a bit unfortunate. Still those are some minor aspects compared to the overall product which is extremely pleasant to play. I also want to point out that the devs have a lot of dedication to their game. The lead dev in particular, interracts with the community a lot, and doesn't hesitate one second to dirty his hands as soon as possible to fix any reported bug, especially the game breaking ones. He's also ready to defend and explain his design choice, all while also being open to constructive criticism and ready to amend and change things for the benefit of the game and overall player enjoyment. This is rare in the industry, and deserves a lot of praise by itself. I don't mind sometimes disagreeing with someone if that person can explain his reasonning and approach, and is ready to accept when changes need to be made. And I don't mind being wrong myself either :p . So really if you like tactical games, management games, or even football, or multiple of those, give it a try. Share it with your friends. This game certainly deserves to get more exposure.
OK, so this one is due for a long time. (over 450 hrs at this point and counting) This is my favourite manager game of all time. Turned-based football, but with so much depth and passion. I have this thing for turned based games since forever. Civilization, X-COM, Age of Wonder series are my all time favs. Just chill and let me think through what I want to do in my game! Because I also love football, I tried other football manager games, but they turned out not really what I was looking for and enjoy the most. FTG is just scratching that spot for me. Great pace. A perfect mix of short term (the matches) and long term (the squad and the development of manager and team headquarters) goals. Then the soundtrack: even after 400 hours they sound great. You humming them under the shower great. Visuals: oh well, it's now a several years old game and even back when it came out it wasn't anything groundbreaking. BUT! The UI and UX feels and looks great even now in 2026! Sure, it could look prettier, but if you like me and love both FOOTBALL and TURN BASED STRATEG, make yourself a HUGE favour and buy this game! One other thing to point out: every DLC adds so much to the base game, that if you like the mechanic of the base game, do consider to buy the rest of the DLCs as well. All of them add so many new mechanics to the base game, even if you go one-by-one, you can't go wrong with them. I'd buy all DLC in one go, if I were you, but do try the demo first to see if this is your kind of game. There's also a very comprehensive editor, if you want to change any player or league or logo of any team. You can (and I encourage to do so) create your own fantasy team and play in any league you want. This is probably the most underrated gem in football manager games, make yourself a favour and give it a go (and support the war-torn developers of Ukraine with it)
Sometimes I read a review so incredibly wrongheaded that it just gets the fingers moving on the keyboard. The base version of this game is maybe not the best sports game, and maybe not the best tactics game, but is definitely the best sports tactics game that I have ever played and is easily worth paying full price for, ignoring the fact I see it on sale about once a month for the price of a bottled water at a gas station. The expansions are high quality and transformative and make the game even better, but are not for a second required to enjoy playing the game. Selling 3 high quality expansions over 8 years to help support continued development of an unfortunately niche indie game is not greedy, it's called paying the bills of people who work for a living. But the devs ARE very greedy. I remember I found a bug in one of my saves and I emailed the dev team with my game logs, and the patch was pushed to steam the next day. They will stop at nothing to make sure this game they have spent nearly a decade developing is a fantastic experience that is worth your time and worth your support. Absolute avarice on their part. Venting aside, I will say that in terms of crossover appeal, if you aren't instantly sold on this game because of one of the two main genres, I think that tactics gamers should 100% give it a try even if they don't really get sports. I'm a bit more hesitant to recommend it to people who play nothing but football manager or OOTP. There is a demo though so you don't have to take my word for it. Technical wise, never had a single issue with on that end, as a turn based tactics game it's an absolute great choice for the Steam Deck.
