TL;DR: Vahrin's Call doesn't present itself as the next Fable or some huge Lord of the rings style RPG, and it shouldn't be judged as one. It's a game made by a small studio with talented people who clearly have a passion for the project. The environment art is beautiful and atmospheric, with a solid soundtrack that helped a lot with immersion. That being said, Vahrin's Call is an okay but ultimately mediocre game, depending on what you expect from it. The combat is clunky, enemy variety is poor, and the story doesn't offer anything special. I still finished it because I enjoyed the world and the medieval fantasy atmosphere. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3779935492 The Good The strongest aspect of the game is easily the environment design . Most areas have their own charm and capture that medieval fantasy feeling really well, sometimes giving me strong LOTR vibes. The music and the atmosphere work very well together and complement the environments nicely. Personally, I also appreciated the fact that the game doesn't have unnecessary complexity when it comes to its mechanics. On the technical side, my experience was also quite smooth. I didn't encounter serious performance problems, major bugs, or anything else that significantly hurt my playthrough. The Meh The loot system leaves a lot to be desired. There are simply too many miscellaneous items scattered everywhere. After a while, I didn't even feel like constantly pressing the button to pick everything up anymore. It started feeling like a simulator where I was cleaning random garbage off the floor. I would much rather have fewer, rarer, and more valuable items that actually make exploration feel rewarding. The Bad Unfortunately, the game has that overall clunky feeling. The combat, enemy mechanics, enemy variety, boss design, weapons, movement, and story are all bad. Enemy variety is incredibly poor. I got sick of seeing the same Shamblers and their mutts everywhere. Even worse, the game sometimes throws too many of them into the same area, turning fights into something closer to a tedious farming simulator than an interesting encounter. The combat itself is also very clunky, especially as a melee-focused player. Hit registration can also be very inconsistent, especially during boss fights. Most bosses were far too easy. Even while playing on Dangerous difficulty, I defeated most of them on my first attempt. The story is also very basic and I did not care about the characters or what was happening. Movement and jumping could use more polish as well. Conclusion Vahrin's Call didn't impress me, but I also can't say that it completely disappointed me. I didn't go into the game with huge expectations, although I did expect a little more from the story and enemy variety to be honest. What I wanted was a small adventure in a medieval fantasy setting that could scratch some of that Lord of the rings itch. Buy it on sale only if you're looking for a straightforward medieval fantasy RPG with interesting environment art, a good atmosphere, and relatively simple mechanics. Suggestions for the developers -> Allow players to jump while drawing/firing the bow. -> Give players simple Accept/Decline dialogue choices when NPCs offer side quests. -> Make loot rarer but much more valuable and meaningful. -> Introduce more enemy variety and reduce mob density. -> A photo mode wouldn't hurt either, personally. Scores Gameplay & Controls: 4/10 World & Level Design: 6/10 Story & Writing: 3/10 Art Direction: 8/10 Audio & Atmosphere: 7/10 Technical Quality: 7/10 Overall: 5.5/10 Recommended on sale only if you're looking for a simple adventure and don't mind the clunkiness.

This is not a game, it is a time machine. It teleports you right into 2004, when ARPGs like Fable, Conan, Forgotten Realms, etc. were released. Clunky as hell, animations are outdated or straight up non-existent, the inventory is basically just a list without any images of the items. Combat is not tactical, it is getting pawned until you figure out how to cheese the A.I. with precise timing. Still, I'm a sucker for these games because you can feel the love and heart-blood the developers put into it.

I set a hour and 55 minute timer because i was "warned" and on alert from the reviews, even though personaly i was hyped about the game coming out. The timer went off and the only thing i did was go back to playing. The dev team didnt try and remake the wheel , they took a borrowed wheel and returned it in way better condition. its a fun game and I'm sorry i let the reviews sway me even for a minute. 2.1 hours at time because its 12am and i have w3ork in the morning or i would still be playing it. -performance- 7(artifacting and some minor visual, nothing game breaking) -combat closer to a skyrim feel but with a dodge roll. -explorations is rewarding so far like devs hide lot in all the hideyholes. im glad they put caves behind waterfalls.

I am SO grateful that I ignored the negative reviews and gave this game a chance. I went into this with an alarm set just to make sure I didn't go over 2 hours with the intention of seeing if the bad things people were saying were true and not one has come up. People saying the performance is bad are either straight up lying for whatever reason or just have outdated PCs. I have had 0 issues running this game, no stutters, no dropping fps, nothing that people are saying. I have the game set to max settings on every setting possible with maxed out FPS set as well. Some reviews say the voice acting is bad but it's not. People expect BG3 level voice acting and when it's not exactly that then they complain. Some loser left a negative review and said "Everything is just stagnant and you press E to collect everything in a huge radius." So I specifically tested that to see how far the pickup radius really was and it was MAYBE 5 feet. So they just completely made that up. One person left a review crying about how they didn't have "Air magic" and 4 elements wasn't enough. I'm only 3 hours in (at the time of review) and the earth/fire magic has been so fun to work with and I don't even have the other 2 types yet. Just say you don't know how to make a build dude, don't be mad at the devs because you are bad at RPGs. All these reviews complaining that they finished the story in 8-9 hours and then continuing to say that they "Couldn't be bothered to explore and loot the whole world" are just examples of people who have the attention span of a gnat and should be disregarded because they clearly just did the main quest and nothing else and then complained about content. I've seen people compare this to Avowed, Enshrouded, Fable, and other games when making complaints but we as a gaming community need to stop doing that. If you expect every game that comes out to be the same as every other game that came out before then you never get original content. I'm convinced that most of these negative reviews are just people who died to the tutorial boss and got butthurt about it. One guy even said "You can't do stealth because heavy armor is just better"... Yeah no sh*t, heavy armor is always better for protection in literally every rpg game ever made LOL that one was probably the funniest review to read. Ignore the bad reviews and do what I did with setting an alarm for under 2 hours if you aren't sure about this game but don't pass up on it because you see it has mixed reviews. If you like classic RPG style games then you will like this one. Support Indie devs that don't use AI voice acting or generative AI for world design.

Pros: + Exploration is not bad, there's lot of stuff to discover in maps + Combat leveling system is fun - you level what you use. And find skill books for extra abilities + Different melee weapons play differently - sword/shield, 2-handed and dual wield all need different approach and attack timing + Shields visually take damage in battles + Gameplay is slower and more methodical than average modern RPG. Reminds of older classic games. + It has certain old RPG charm, like something out of late 90s/00s. It has nostalgic feel to it even despite being brand new. + Scale does not feel overwhelming, like you sometimes feel in large open world AAA games + You can combine different combat styles and skills however you like - melee with magic, magic with traps, ranged with melee etc. + Level design is good. Maps are well crafted, vibrant and do not feel empty. + You can cheese AI that is not to bright Cons: - Performance is terrible. Settings don't improve anything. FPS never goes over 70, most times 30-40 on RX9070 at 1440p while game looks average at best. Also does not have FSR, only DLSS. - UI looks like it's still a placeholder. There is no UI and UX is a mess. It's hard to keep track of what you loot, clearing inventory of trash, dismantling. Very few QoL features. - Combat takes time to get used to. It does not feel to good at start, gets better once you learn rhythm of different weapons, but it's still a bit clunky. - There's not much point of skill points if you can respec for free at any point. Lack of friction makes them pointless. - Writing is somewhat generic. All the basic RPG tropes. But at least there's some humor and game doesn't always take itself seriously. - Human models are low quality. It would have been better if devs went with stylized human models. - Title is the most forgettable generic RPG nonsense. It will hurt marketing, and I already forgot what this game is called. If you are a patient person, this is not a terrible game. It obviously is not AAA quality. It looks and plays like a low budget indie game, but it has some good ideas. Also leveling system and exploration is fun. It is not open world - map is separated in smaller levels with loading screens. Game wants you to take your time. You can turn off quest pointers for better exploration. Biggest problem is that it feels unfinished. Even the UI looks like it's still in alpha stage. Performance is not ok, especially considering it's Unreal Engine 4 not 5. I don't really know what all those review bombers expected from a small indie RPG, but it is not that terrible. It certainly has flaws, but it comes with certain charm and sort of nostalgia for old RPGs from early 2000s or late 90s. Remember, when games used to be fun to play despite their flaws? This is kind of like that - yes, combat is not great, writing is mid, characters don't look right and it will not run with 240fps, but somehow I still got immersed in it the same way I did in Gothic, Morrowind and other broken, clunky RPGs from that time. It has potential just needs more work and polish. And for the love of god, it needs a real UI. I'm kind of on the fence about the pricing. If you like older classic RPGs, you might be fine with it and you will get ton of fun out of this game. If you are more used to AAA, high budget open world RPGs, better get something else or wait for sale under 10€. I would recommend watching some gameplay on YT before deciding if this is for you. This is not a game for everybody and that's fine.
