Terrinoth: Fun But Flawed For the right group it's 100% worth playing, and there's real fun to be had. For the wrong person it's lackluster and disappointing. Overall my wife and I had 30+ hours of fun with this game, and we do recommend it - but there are some specific things you should know before you dive into it with your gaming partner. Wait, your gaming *partner*? Yep. Terrinoth shines most when you're playing with a friend - and specifically when you're playing with one friend. Here's why: [*] Characters are fun but simple. A starting character has 2 at-will abilities, 2 cooldown abilities, a special, and 2 pieces of equipment. An endgame character adds 1 more cooldown ability and 1 more piece of equipment, and that's it. Your abilities will get better and more fun over time, but you really want everyone controlling 2 characters so each player has enough to do. [*] Fights have lots of monsters, and you don't have any player inputs during this time (although you can set up "overwatch" with certain characters beforehand). I like this because it keeps things moving, but it means that you're waiting a LONG time between turns if you're only playing one character. [*] The first 17 of 20 missions all have a required character - either a new character you just got or a character that has some specific story beats during the mission. This means somebody is always changing characters. When playing with a partner, this is easier; my wife and I basically grew our "stables" of characters that we switched between and it worked out pretty well. If you have a particularly patient and flexible group of 3-4 friends, I suppose that could work too. For my friends they'd be distracted with all the waiting at higher player counts. So why does Terrinoth work with a friend? Because you can shout at them when they AOE you, or activate the bomb you're standing next to. Because you can thank them when their paladin jumps in and rescues you with a shield. Because the dialogue is sometimes laugh-out-loud funny and it's great to have somebody else to laugh with... but it's sometimes cringe-inducing bad and it's also great to have somebody else to laugh with then. Because the game is good but not great, and the fights start enjoyable but get repetitive, and the upgrades start juicy but fade away over time, and eventually the plot peters out with a weird "but it was ME the whole time!" psuedo reveal, and ALL of that becomes better with a friend. You can laugh at it, discuss it, talk about it, poke fun at it, and it's genuinely fun when you do. Because in between the awkward talent trees and the obvious favoritism for certain characters (there is never a reason to NOT bring Finniel, I'm just saying), there are a ton of good fights to fight and environments to explore. Each level is filled with secrets, some of which are genuinely well hidden. And those fights are way better when you have someone to share them with, and those secrets are way more fun to discover if you can find them before your friend does. And ultimately the value proposition of Terrinoth is this: there are too many better single player RPGs and tactics games to recommend Terrinoth for just that, but there's few enough multiplayer RPGs and tactics games that my wife and I are always on the lookout for more. Note that I'm saying this despite the fact that, at time of review, there was a persistent bug causing crashes at the end of each multiplayer game (I'll let devs leave a comment if/when they fix it). There is a good game here, and it shines brightest in multiplayer. Final Verdict If you have a friend to play with (or a particularly patient 3-4 person group), buy it full price and enjoy. If you're playing solo, wait for a sale before you give this one a try.
First time review. First I would like to say the only reason there are allot of people giving it a negative review right now is the multiplayer. The solo campaign is awesome. If you like BG3 or Wrath of the Righteous, you are going to really like this game. The characters are very enjoyable, and the game play is very well done. You start off the game with a handful of characters and get a new one at the beginning of each chapter except for the last one. Each one is very unique and plays very different. Instead of an open world each chapter is broken into around 5 dungeons, each also very different and well built. They usually took me around 2 hours per dungeon, but I like to explore every nook and cranny. Plus there is ALOT of different enemies in this game, unlike some other games of the like. I found very little bugs and the game ran beautifully. If I had any complaints it would just be the game was a bit short coming in at 40 hours for me. And balance was a little off, especially on one or two bosses. By the end of the game you will be rolling most fights. Oh, and please add a mini map on the screen. Other then that I really enjoyed this game. 8.5/10
I've played games like Divinity: Original Sin, Baldur's Gate 3, Pathfinder, Marvel's Midnight Suns, and Expedition 33, so I have plenty of experience with turn-based games. I would describe Terrinoth as a very simple version of a CRPG. This isn't an open-world game, and the story is fairly straightforward, taking you from one location to the next. For example, after finishing a mission in 007 First Light, you move on to another location. In Terrinoth, that's essentially moving from one dungeon to another. The dungeons are a good size, not too big and not too small. They usually take about an hour to complete, and I've found them quite enjoyable so far. Character progression is also very simple. You level up your heroes and choose passive buffs for them. There are eight heroes in total, each with a different role, such as tank, mage, healer, rogue, and so on. You also have two equipment slots where you can equip items that provide additional bonuses. Each hero can equip up to four skills. More skills can be unlocked by finding them in dungeons or earning them as rewards for completing dungeons. Again, it's a pretty straightforward system. Overall, I'm enjoying the game. It's fun, relaxing, and easy to pick up. However, if you're looking for a dark fantasy game with deep lore, a strong story, extensive character customization, or the ability to create your own character, this game might not be for you. My biggest complaint is that the game doesn't support DLSS or FSR. Nowadays, these technologies can sometimes look better than native resolution, especially at 4K, while also reducing the load on the GPU. That said, I'm having a good time with it so far, and I'd give it a solid 7.5/10.
6/10 in its current state a few days after release. Could be 8/10 with some fixes and QoL improvements. Worth a buy for tactics fans or anyone who enjoyed the devs prior game Dungeons of Naheulbeuk. (I did!) I finished act 1 (5 chapters) on Veteran in about 10 hours solo. Was defeated a few times, at bosses. At least 30 hours of content in the game. Good + Tactical combat + Combos, status effects, team synergy + Art, especially the stain glass murals + Responsive devs still updating the game, clearly doing hard work, labor of love ❤️ + Fast combat animation setting is great + Mission based dungeon crawls + Puzzles are straightforward and infrequent + Plays different, albeit simpler, than D&D Bad - Exploration and walking around is sooooo slow with no settings to speed it up - Backtracking is awful because there's no fast travel nor fast walk (The Looking Pond was particularly bad) - Level design is mediocre and expected, mostly on rails single path with a few offshoots - Mandatory tutorial? (devs might have fixed this already.) - Pathfinding: computer doesn't know how to deal with stairs or elevation - Writing is campy - Most of the voice acting is bad, though Kharaz (dragonborn warrior) and Finniel (druid) are pretty good - Very slow save game loads sometimes even with M.2 NVMe storage on a beefy rig - Choppy graphics performance - Difficulty on Veteran is all over the place (more on this below) - No barks setting still barks (characters saying things when you select them) - Knocking an enemy off a cliff is still instant kill (needs a setting to turn down the damage from this cheese) - Ranged fire is mandatory in act 1 (bring Kharaz!), there should be other ways to solve problems - Healing is overpowered and AoE damage spells seem weak - Overwatch is overpowered especially with Myria at choke points - Coop / multiplayer? (I didn't try but it's all over the negative reviews, oops) Requests - Exploration / walk speed setting (that also speeds up non-combat attack animations) - Improve exploration pathfinding: my character sometimes thinks there's a path then just ends up humping a wall - Improve enemy pathfinding: path around traffic jams, run out of range and guard (protect+5) if no path to destination - Make computer enemies less predictable and add a "deadly AI" setting like BG3 where it focus fires down your weakest party members - More granular animation speed setting (e.g. a percentage) - Speed up the slow default animation speed just a bit so you don't turn away impatient players - More juice on opening chests (make loot feel good!) - More varied loot: getting gold nearly every time is meh - Combat logs with scrollback (in game) - Option to have the enemy knock the heroes off the high ground for big damage (but not insta kill) - Buff Aurta, her synergies with the other characters are fun but when the others can just destroy everything there's no point bringing her Some of the nastiest and most fun fights were with multiple crossbow zombies on overwatch pinning down most of the party. Veteran was challenging at first but as the party leveled up and powered up it became a cakewalk by act 1 chapter 5. The final act 1 boss seemed hard at first with some annoying vine respawn mechanics but I ended the fight at nearly full health and no one downed. Def the fault of the shoddy computer enemy tactics. Should add crossbow zombies to that fight and ensure the boss guy knows to back off and throw rocks if the party is on the high ground. Or let bossman jump up and smash the heroes. Darkness (the hardest difficulty) is more stat boosts for bad guys and stat nerfs for the heroes. It doesn't change the tactics much and it isn't more fun. Would love to see new computer tactics and coordination on the higher difficulties. Overall Terrinoth is a good game that could be great with a bit of refinement. Putting it on the shelf for now while I await patches. It's fun and I'm glad I bought it. Best of luck to the devs!
It's a good game to play after work in the evening. There is no grind or quest management. Resources like health and skill usages will replenish after each encounter. So each encounter is a challange by itself. I prefere that mechanic, because you can use all your resources in each battle. Otherwise I tent to not use any skill that requires resources until the end of the game. Also prolonging a battle to heal up your party is also not necessary. I like the pacing of the battles and synergies of the characters. The story is fine so fare. I would have prefered a more mature, horror or mystery. Luckily its also not childish. I'm playing only solo, because I think there is not much deept in each individual character or decission making in scenarios to play it multiplayer. In solo mode the game works without any problems.
