If you've played an ASa Project title before, you probably already know what to expect: Deranged MC and heroines that make you lose half your braincells for every minute you read. And of course, ASa Project delivers just like that. The story follows our two-timing prick protagonist, who for some reason or another, decides to date two girls at the same time one day without telling the other. Of course, this does not stop the plot from being stupid with the things the MC has to pull to not get caught cheating. Surprisingly though, the two-timing/cheating aspect is actually being treated (rather) seriously by the plot. The overall absurdity is also toned down compared to other titles with less 4th wall breaking humor in favor of two-timing and situational jokes instead. As for the individual romance routes, they're nothingburger as usual. Nothing of note happens with h-scenes sprinkled here and there. The characters are probably what will make or break for you. One thing, the MC is an awful person, and he stays awful. The heroines are blunt as expected from this studio. You have Kirame: an airhead who is born to eat takoyaki, Rua: a blatantly manipulative pain in the ass, Ruirui: short-tempered, foul-mouthed, and likes graphically violent magical girls, and Miyako, who is probably a cat. The entire appeal of this VN comes from seeing these characters talking about the greatest topics to ever grace the Earth, like how cockroaches may taste like shrimps or something. Lastly, I personally think this would make a very good moege you want to read if you're fed up with how repetitive moege can be: Instead of the usual MC whose only distinct quality is being a nice person, you get a douchebag who didn't really give a damn about two-timing even after the fact. And instead of heroines whose only character flaw is being bad at cooking, you get a manipulative woman with the most insufferable personality I've ever seen in a moege (and she's PEAK RAHHHH). Of course what I just said was a hyperbole, but hopefully you get what I mean. Anyways, this is my most favorite ASa Project title out of the currently localized 4 (the three other being Koikari, Sankaku Ren'ai, and Ren'ai x Royale) by a long shot. It's also the cheapest one out of the four for some reason.

Short review cause this took me forever to read. It's actually decent. Common route is particularly strong for an Asa Project title and it ended up being my favorite AsaP title by a decent bit. The heroine routes then fall pretty flat with nothing special in any of them. I will say some of the scenes were surprisingly hot, and there was a decent bit of non-fluff dialogue in them as well, which I always appreciate. Recommended if you like AsaP titles, even though this one is less off the wall than their other titles. Although you better get used to "two-timing" jokes, because that's what the majority of the jokes are about.

This game LOOKS like it would suck. It doesn't have an interesting cover, it doesn't sound all that interesting...but Futamata Ren'ai is damn good. I haven't read any other ASa games, but are they as good as this? Probably not. Futamata Ren'ai is actually funny, and it isn't too common you see character interactions this entertaining, mostly with the beast of a protagonist and Yua/Rui. The MC is just a really funny guy, who isn't a total ♥♥♥♥♥ when multiple girls want him. How often do you find an MC with a fetish for making girls cry, and it's well done? The scenes are incredibly entertaining, and I rarely ever got bored. The gold of this game doesn't come from it's music or art, which is good, but nothing all that impressive. The goal seemed to be to make a hilarious, entertaining story, and they knocked it out of the park. Futamata Ren'ai knew when to get serious as well, and the backstory behind some of the characters including the main character and Yua was something I really appreciated. Speaking of Yua, she may be the most insufferable, pain in the ass, evil, scheming heroine out there, but in the best way possible. Their interactions are nonstop, back and forth quips that keep you glued to the screen. I was also happy to see some unconventional H in the game... very fun stuff. I would certainly give another ASa game a try, but I'm not sure they get as good as this!

If you’ve played Asa Project visual novels like Sankaku Renai, Koikari, or Renai Royale, you’ll recognize the rom-com style in Futamata Renai: a mix of savage, blunt humor and absurdly stupid characters. Still, it stands out among other Asa Project titles and moege visual novels. Distinct Setting and Humor Style What immediately caught my attention is its university setting, something rare in visual novels. The only other college-based moege I’ve read was Sugar Style, but its humor felt weaker compared to SMEE’s other works. Thankfully, Futamata Renai delivers with savage, stupid, dirty, and sometimes mean-spirited humor, kind of like South Park with less violence and politics. The university setting adds a layer of maturity, even though the main characters are, in some way: buttholes, douchebags, or idiots. Being in their early twenties, they’re unafraid to drink, leading to classic gags about vomiting or spilling unfiltered thoughts while tipsy. The Quirky Two-Timing Protag The core fun comes from the protagonist, Nao, who secretly dates two girls at once from the beginning, hence the title Futamata (二股), meaning “two-timing,” and the localized subtitle, “Two Times the Trouble.” Unlike many Asa Project or moege protagonists, Nao has a distinct personality and backstory, similar to a SMEE MC: quirky, annoying, prone to emotional outbursts, and tossing out crude jokes. If the girls weren’t just as savage or stupid, I might not have liked him that much. I do overall, but have mixed feelings. Nao’s two-timing stems from a late common route reveal: he fears commitment due to past trauma. His choice to date two girls without telling them comes from his cowardice, their weird attraction to him, and his general indecisiveness. By underestimating the consequences, he creates the common route’s thrill: how he keeps the two-timing secret, especially as the girls become friends. In a less absurd, comedy-driven rom-com, I’d be less forgiving, but here, I just sit back and enjoy the silly melodrama and quirky humor. The Heroines The four heroines are surprisingly well-balanced compared to other Asa Project titles, where I often didn't care for one or two of them. Yua, the first girl Nao two-times, is my least favorite but far from bad. She’s the bitchiest moege heroine I’ve encountered, balanced by a backstory that humanizes her while showing she copes poorly—arrogant and manipulative to serve her hidden ideals. She’s a master bully, using goofy troll humor like a sadist while still trying to remain popular at school. She’s fun to laugh at but not the most lovable. Kirame, the other two-timed girl, is the most simple-minded heroine for better or worse. She's just a half-Japanese foreigner caught in a messy situation and is my personal favorite heroine for her likability, aka the closest to a wholesome girl, with her social anxiety about just wanting more friends. The toxic nature of her friends and boyfriend forces her to get snarky or manipulative at times, but ultimately she’s a pushover, leading me to feel bad for her at times. That said, her love for takoyaki and constant "Whuh!" reactions are very amusing and charming. Rui, unlike her former best friend Yua, is the most caring heroine despite her tsundere traits. That said she's still very much an Asa Project heroine: blunt, honest, though less stupid and very eager to challenge Yua, the “final boss.” Being the only who knows about Nao’s two-timing from the beginning, she gives him understandable sass but uses him to further her own goals, making her role entertaining. What helps is when she break off being the straight man into jokes around being an anime-obsessed cosplayer who loves a violent magical girl series. I consider Miyako the closest to the "true" heroine, as she was very close to Nao before the story begins and they have the best comedic chemistry. Her quirky, cat-like, blunt personality is amusing, and her heroine route just felt the most "right", with solid reconciliation (despite Nao’s prior antics). Her backstory is also probably the most engaging. That said I like, but don't love her personality. Side characters like Layla (Kirame’s ditzy, flirty BFF), Runa (a chaotic gremlin), and Seika (Yua’s obsessive lesbian fangirl) add comedic variety. Personal Flaws I consider Futamata Renai Asa Project’s most consistently enjoyable title, with likable heroines and routes, but it has flaws. The romance in general was very forgettable outside MAYBE Miyako's route, a common Asa Project issue, as they very much prioritize comedy. The Side routes are only 15 minutes at most and not that funny, and Layla’s unexpected immorality disappointed me. The heroines knowing Nao two-timed by the time the heroine routes start makes the romance even harder to buy, though it does amusingly raise the angle of all the heroines being into “bad boys.” Nao makes me laugh most of the time but can go a bit too far, like overly trolling Kirame or an out-of-character H-scene where he non-consensually screws a sleeping drunk girl. The heroines’ repetitive use of Nao as a comedic punching bag can feels excessive at times. I actually preferred when the girls were roasting each other. Lastly, I generally consider a good moege (genre-wise) to have at least 1 “ideal” girl. These heroines, though funny and kinda deep, are too objectively flawed to be “waifu material", so I could like them but not love any of them. Conclusion Futamata Renai is a consistently fun, entertaining time. While the humor may not be as over the top funny as Sankaku Renai or Renai Royale, it definitely sticks out with its unique college setting and premise around the two-timing aspect, and just everybody being objectively unlikable people. The slightly more mature setting even leads to surprisingly interesting melodrama and character depth, way more than other Asa Project titles. However, just don’t take the characters too seriously (they are not good people) and you should have a fun time laughing at how savage, mean, funny, weird, and occasionally wholesome this slice-of-life cast can be.
