Dec. 2025
Got this on sale, and this was easily the best 4 dollars i've ever spent. If you're a fan of classic action games, definitely pick this one up on discount. Gameplay: This game feels like if you took just the shooting out of Devil May Cry, and combined it with the balls to the wall encounter shenanigans of Ninja Gaiden 2. While it doesn't quite live up to either its worth noting there's some familiarity here for fans of either of those games. Shooting is sublime, there's lots of it, and you feel like a character straight out of a John Woo movie just as you would expect. I would liken it almost to the first Uncharted where you're just running around guns blazing constantly the whole time. It feels amazing. Targeting is also surprisingly good, and rarely did I shoot an enemy that I didn't want. The melee combat.... eh not so much. Its floaty and often feels like your not hitting anything at all. While its serviceable playing as Graves, who you mainly play as, there is a part where you briefly play as a melee focused character where the game clearly falters. Combos and abilities are fairly competent for this kind of action game, but your demolition shots can feel a bit too powerful, especially the level 3s. They sort of balance themselves out with the scoring system, but some people may definitely feel that you can cheat the game by spamming these. Game Design: Playing for S ranks is name of the game, and your mileage will vary depending on how well you engage with the beat and art systems. Once you understand that every level is designed for you to keep your beats going for as long as possible you'll find a much deeper game than what mainstream reviewers will have you believe. Routing myself to the next room while chaining shots on the destructable environment, and just barely making it to the next encounter with my beat score intact gave me a thrill I haven't quite experienced in any other game. In this regard this game feels truly fresh. There's this constant trade off between keeping your beat count high vs. going for your crazy demolition shots, executions, and combo skills to gain art points, all the while keeping yourself alive and with your health bar as full as possible. Not to mention you need to complete the levels as fast as possible, and kill the majority of enemies. In this sense the systems feed into each other nicely. Executions keep you're shields steady, while demolition shots keep your health full, where both give you art. On the other hand rapidly raising your beats with gun skills makes you a bit more vulnerable. I played on hard and it was very clear the goal wasn't just to finish the level without dying (though this obviously happens occasionally lol), but rather to always finish with the best score possible. The game assumes you finish with full life every time. In this sense the game is very arcadey, and I feel this is what people are missing when they say its either too easy or too shallow. On a final note for scoring... I will say that i did eventually discover some easy strategies near the end for keeping both my beat and art pts high, but at that point the game changed things up enough where I was still struggling to get S ranks and wanted to go back and clear the levels again. I have yet to play the hardest difficulty, but am hopeful that the game will show even further depths there. At the moment though, I think player skill level will definitely influence how deep you feel this game goes. Enemy Design: Overall there's some great enemy variety, enemies with rocket launchers, snipers, big bruisers, grenade throwers, chainsaw wielders, ninjas... the list goes on and on. Enemy AI is pretty barebones similar to other shooters, but the encounters throw enough entities and they do enough damage to keep you on your toes at any given time. When there's tons and tons of enemies, this is where the game can really shines. Bosses are not crazy hard, but they break up the action and can be a good check. Like some shmups you can also farm these guys for points if your good enough by delaying the fight a little. Unfortunately, with some of the later bosses there are some annoying damage spikes I found where you can get one shotted even with full shields unfairly, but nothing you won't find in many other/older games. Lastly, the bosses can't really handle the demolition shots I found. They give you invincibility, and you can skip entire attacks with them. Presentation: Definitely not triple A, but it was made in Unreal so the graphics are more or less what you would expect. Characters are kind of iffy, the animations are definitely stiff and they seem lifeless at times. If you're allergic to jank I would look at other reviews before deciding if this game is okay for you, but my tolerance is pretty high and the presentation felt good enough for me during my time playing. Story: Cmon... you already know, its an action game lol. I will say though there's some nice nods to the anime that I could recall. Haven't played the original, so any overlap or references there I couldn't tell you. Performance: The game for me ran really smoothly, especially with alot of entities on screen. No complaints on performance for an action game from me where my standards are a bit higher. I have high-end hardware though, and don't want to go into too much detail here. Please don't take my word for it. Bugs: A few enemies got stuck, and I found myself in a corner once. Nothing that broke the experience at all. Conclusion: Super underrated, and has a lot more depth then people will have you believe. The beat system is truly unique, and i would recommend this for any true fan of action games. This is definitely what i would consider a hidden gem.

Well, I'm reluctant to call this game an underrated gem. It's not exactly the most polished tool in the box. It's not innovative, particularly well-executed, or visually impressive. And I was able to understand in the first few minutes of the game why the reception was so poor, even after many of the problems reported during launch had been fixed. This is a perfect embodiment of what people would call "one note". A premise and execution so simple and so absurdly distilled, it would pass through the eye of a needle. You walk through generic corridors of varying sizes and concepts, while wading through a tidal wave of bullets and enemies, shooting your ridiculous anime hand cannons with infinite ammo at everything in sight. From the beginning to the end of each level, and the game as a whole, you do the exact same thing, in the exact same way, with very minimal variations and almost without any kind of break in pace. There is no satisfying progression or interesting narrative here. Just the endless hell and noise of the shooting. Level design? Memorable surprises? Just a distant suggestion. You start shooting and don't stop until the end. You shoot even when there are no enemies to shoot. And the more you shoot, the faster you shoot. In the end of levels you are judged by a series of criteria involving every action you take during combat, narrowing the playstyle almost perfectly into what I believe the developers were aiming for. And this is undoubtedly a process that can become exhausting very quickly. So since the combat doesn't have much depth and isn't exactly at the ideal point of polish to be satisfying to master, the game is at the mercy of repetition that can easily swallow up the experience. It's a pretty long run for the genre (8+ hours). I can easily imagine someone going to play this, having fun for half an hour and then getting tired of it. In the case of professional reviewers, forced to play games as quickly as possible, the experience of playing hours of this at a time seems terrible. But... If it clicks with you, i believe there is a good deal of fun here. This isn't some super complex and deep stylish shooter, with a huge skill ceiling, which will deliver engaging challenges and reward you a lot for the time invested. It's pure and simple an arcade grind that will deliver an insane dose of heavy metal/techno infused mindless bombastic unbridled action, whose objective is to replay the same levels over and over again in search of that perfect golden ranking. And that's it. The game's appeal is certainly limited, but it's still there. It has a sense of style and its distilled action formula is at least consistent and exciting. If you're one of those who every now and then wants to play something different and more casual in the middle of a bigger game, Gungrave G.O.R.E is a perfect fit. The game is organized into short missions, generally lasting less than 10 minutes, optimized to be replayed multiple times and ideal for short sessions. It requires zero commitment, is easy to pick up and is simple enough not to distract you too much from the main game. I had a blast over several days. And I'm going to keep playing for a while, 20~30 minutes at a time, until I get S Rank in all the missions. Do I recommend it? Yes (with a good discount). Do I think this game is some kind of hidden gem? Not really. But it's good, try it. P.S: There is a good dose of cutscenes in the game serving as links between the stages. Frankly, I would tell you to skip them all. Most of them have zero content and the story is pure nonsense. P.S.2: This is definitely a game where you can't get the feel of it simply by watching someone play. Trust me, it's a lot more fun than it looks.

I was looking for a game to relax in between long and tiresome study sessions, something to play that doesn't fill my mind with information so I could actually focus on remembering everything for the exams and this game really did the trick. I might be missing context because I'm unfamiliar with the series, but if you're looking for something to unwind and you think the characters look cool, give it a try.

Good mindless fun. Voice acting and writing is garbage tier but it's so bad it's good. Play with English voices for a good laugh. Combat is fairly well done and is not too challenging even on the Hard difficulty.

It's exactly like the others described, a PS2 game in somewhat modern graphics. Once you stop caring about the type of game its not, you will definitely enjoy the game. But I cannot recommend the game at full price. Get it on 80% sale and it's well worth for that price.
