Demons are buttholes. I had a ton of fun the first time through, not so much the second and third. Not having difficulties stack is lame and a waste of my time. Too many unskippable moments, and the camera keeps taking control away from me to zoom around the level. Otherwise, I love jumping back in time to play these kinds of games. More video settings would have been nice. No crashes and I never bugged out. Catchy, like herpes. 10k on SH.

What would be a solid but otherwise forgettable third-person shooter is elevated by the fantastic presentation and direction behind the game. Suda51 and Shinji Mikami are a match made in heaven, with their first collab, Killer7, being one of the most interesting games of its respective generation. Shadows of the Damned reels in the esotericness a bit, opting for a more straightforward overall plot, but the journey the game takes you on is where it truly shines. The enemy design, unique environments, and music keep you motivated to blast your way through hell to rescue your beloved. Akira Yamaoka composes the game's soundtrack, which frequently delves into tones and riffs similar to his work on the original Silent Hill games. Mary Elizabeth McGlynn even performs vocals on some of the tracks, adding a surprising amount of emotion to the game. In typical Suda51 fashion, the game will confuse you, make you laugh, and even evoke sympathy for Garcia and Paula. The look of the demon underworld and its denizens has a familiar yet distinct feel to it. The dreaminess of it definitely matches the eerie vibe the game is going for. For combat, you receive three weapons that upgrade as you progress. You can also find red gems, which will affect your stats directly. The encounters do a good job of keeping you on your toes, making use of the different alt modes the weapons have, along with throwing light puzzles into the mix to spice things up. There's always something new happening, which keeps the game's linearity interesting. You'll also get a lot of banter between Garcia and his demon partner, Johnson, voiced by Steve Blum and Greg Ellis, respectively. The dialogue in general has that typical over-the-top flair Suda51 is famous for. Your eyes will widen with the stuff said in-game. As for this port, it's very barebones and lacklustre. There are no graphical options for fine-tuning, as the 360 version simply runs at a higher frame rate and resolution. That's good enough to enjoy the game, but some people may be disappointed with the limited features. I only ever suffered one crash in the side-scrolling shmup section (yes, that's a real thing). However, after booting the game up again, I was able to reach the end without any further issues. Everyone who considers themselves a fan of video games needs to try at least one Suda51 game, and this game is probably the best entry point for most people. There are no interconnecting references to his other works in this game, and the gameplay is simple and engaging enough to motivate you for around 6 hours. A rollercoaster ride of absurdity and action that is self-contained. Yes, Travis Strikes Again ultimately brings SotD into the broader Suda51 world, but that was after the fact. $25 is a fair price for the heart and soul that went into making this game. Highly recommend, so don't be afraid to pick this up and blow loads out of your Big Johnson!

A disgrace of a remaster, as basically nothing has been remastered. There are no graphical options available that you'd find in any basic modern game. It looks and runs ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ terribly on the PC. The upvote is for the game, which is the same old campy, b-movie, over the top, insanity filled fun time; and because it runs and looks great on The Steam Deck, and I can recommend people to play it on that if they have one.

This is one of those linear, straightforward, no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ kind of games people are missing nowadays. It's full of ♥♥♥♥ jokes and has more personality than 99% of AAA games coming out today. Also blowing off demon heads with laser aim is satisfying.

Shinji Mikami and Suda51, it's pulpy, stylish, 3rd person shooting. It's fun.
