I'm a Mexican, Johnson, not a Mexican't. Never really had a chance to play this properly back in the day, so playing SotD today was sorta like playing it for the first time ever. Despite everything that happened to the development of the game: multiple script rejections, constant nagging from John Riccitiello Damon Riccitiello/Ricotello towards Shinji Mikami to change the gameplay yet again, and the rest of Grasshopper constantly fighting Unreal Engine 3 because it was their first time making a game on this engine... It still turned out to be fun. Sure SotD wasn't the game SUDA/Mikami envisioned initially, aka Kurayami, it could've been so much different. And yet it still got a very SUDA story with gameplay spice mix from Mikami. Now that I think of it, SotD was sorta kinda proto The Evil Within, with shadows being a part of third-person shooter-horror gameplay. And hey, it even got a "KURAYAMI Mode" DLC, which most likely was the implementation of the gameplay feature initially planned for SUDA51 x Mikami Kurayami. Anyway, Shadows of the Damned is an ok game and worth at least one playthrough. Oh, and in case you haven't done that already, go play Travis Strikes Again if you want a semi-sequel to the story with some bits of Kurayami thrown in.
Amazing PS3 era japanese jank kino. Absolutely worth getting if you like action games with SOVL from that period. My grandfather was a programmer and a game designer in the 80s and 90s who worked on games like Leisure Suit Larry and Night Trap. One day I asked him why do people not make games like that anymore, and I'll never forget his answer. With tears in his eyes, he told me: we don't know how; we lost the technology.
I am SO glad that one of my most favorite games from the PS3/X360 era finally made it to the PC. Shadows of the Damned is a weirdly insane, stylish horror-action from the crazy mind of Suda51. With lots of references to horror movies and games, like Evil Dead and Resident Evil; nice adult humor; and loads of blood, gore, and demons. The music is written by one of my favorite composers, Akira Yamaoka, who wrote music for the Silent Hill series. And it rocks. I just love this bizarre game. The only disadvantage is the PC port itself. It turned out to be very lazy work. Imagine no graphics settings at all! The only things you can change in settings are volume, sensitivity, and language. Sometimes the camera is not following the protagonist in dynamic moments. At least the game runs well and is not crashing. But even though the PC port is not that great, it's cool that the game is not locked on PS3/X360 anymore. Always glad to replay this masterpiece; it always brings me back to good-old times. 9/10, MAGNIFICO!
An underrated gem. SOTD didn't get the attention and love it deserved when it first released though I'm hoping it finally will with this release. The game has so much personality; an unhinged wild ride from start to finish with some of the funniest (and admittedly immature) dialogue you'll hear in a game. One criticism I do have is the aim sensitivity. I think it's really high (I play on controller so I'm not sure about keyboard and mouse) and other players might need to experiment with it, but other than that, SOTD is a great time and worth diving into if you want something crazy and unique.
Sometimes a game just needs to wait for the right moment to click. The original 360 version was there, and it bounced off — life happened, other games demanded attention, and Shadows of the Damned got shelved with the mental note of "maybe someday." Then the remaster lands, and suddenly eleven hours disappear because now the brilliance is obvious: this is Suda51 at his most unhinged, and the fact that it took a technical refresh for the game to finally connect is on the original release, not the vision. The remaster doesn't reinvent anything — it just removes the performance jank and visual mud that suffocated the 360 original. Cleaned up, the art direction snaps into focus: a deliberately grotesque fever dream where the game's not afraid to be ugly, crude, and funny in ways that most AAA horror-comedy aims for and misses. The ♥♥♥♥ jokes hit different when the game doesn't feel like it's struggling to render them at 30fps. The core design is pure Suda51 chaos: third-person shooting married to puzzle-solving wrapped in an absurdist story about dragging a demon's girlfriend out of Hell. It shouldn't work — narratively it's nonsense, mechanically it's a Frankenstein of genre mashups — but the confidence is what sells it. The game knows exactly how ridiculous it is and commits fully. That's the entire game right there: commitment to the bit, no apologies. The original release buried this under technical compromises. The remaster just needed to get out of the way and let the game breathe. Eleven hours and finally the "how did I miss this?" clicks. Essential for Suda51 fans. Essential for anyone who wants to see what happens when a studio trusts its weird vision completely. Get it.
