Excellent remaster of these fantastic old games. Now I wish there was remake/remaster of the first 4 .hack//IMOQ games.

First, some expectations: vol 1 to 3 formed a complete story, while vol 4 was just a low-effort fandisk. I would say it's fine to skip it unless you're a big fan of the series. This is a very stereotypical shonen story with overly tropy characters, but executed fairly well. The plot beats were paced well, and the combat was engaging (at least for the first two volumes). Overall this RPG had a very low difficulty, so don't worry too much about equipments or items. There was an accompanying anime series called .hack//Roots. It provided important context for the beginning of the story in vol 1. The anime's pacing was super slow though...

I usually enjoy writing rather drawn out explanations of why a game is good, but I think I'd catch more people by keeping this short. Stick to the first sentence of each of these points if you want the long and short of it. This is not just a good game, but it's a bargain. Last Recode is a combination of four different games that follow a chronology. It has been updated to look better, play better, and has great support. It has great gameplay and even if you don't like the class sets you get at the start they actually improve upon this with each different act, creating a well tailored story that shows character growth. Here's the basics: + You get 4 games for less than the price of a full game, and its even better when it is on sale. + The story is rich and character focused. I'd say it is deeper than a shonen anime by at least two fold, even for its time. + The music slaps. Great audio direction and zones are awesome. They add more the further you go, too, to prevent repetition, not that any of them get old. +Customization similar to the MySpace Era. This one is a weird one, but oldheads will be able to tell you what I mean. You can pick artwork at your "main menu hub", which will make sense in the game. Additionally, you can reply to messages, pick music, and a number of other things. Additionally there are forums you can check out and what's even cooler is there are full on animated videos you can watch on the web. I'll avoid overdoing it here, but there is a ton of content and it serves the purpose of world and character building. +Combat is fun. The way the game works you are supposed to grind a bit, but you don't have to. Arguably you could get through each of the games in this collection without needing to hit max level, but you get a lot of cool bonuses for doing it, and there is enough content that you may not even notice you've hit max level if you're actively engaging in it. +The art direction is sweet. The locations are pretty and have themes you can clearly distinguish. They knew what they were doing when they made this game. They wanted something that was like an anime, and while many characters have moments where they stick to static-esque (not truly static as they emote, but it stays within a range), they have just as many if not more moments where they break this mold and actively express themselves. Its done well enough that while you will consciously come out of the game knowing it, it isn't jarring in the game itself. +Character interactions aren't stuck to just a few words with NPCs, they have depth and real life feeling to them. Okay, so this one has a caveat to it. What I mean by this has some relation to something I mentioned before, and I'll give you an example that doesn't spoil stuff. Gaspard is a chubby lil cute dog guy, right? Well you learn a lot about him not just through in character interactions with your "avatars", but you can also email him in the game, and even find him on the forums and respond to his messages. Additionally, characters that may not like you initially, and ones you may not like initially, have the possibility of growing on you or you growing on them. Trust me, I'm cynical and when I first came into this game I had some people I loathed. Some I still don't like, or one I guess, but overall I found that by the end of it I was pretty all in on each person I had come to know and appreciate. It was awesome to do, and they were extremely well written. They respond pretty accurately to how you talk to them, too. Great touches overall. +Not a time sink, but an entertainment investment. This one can sound bad, but I don't think it is. You can move at your own pace in this game. If you are someone who wants the instant gratification of progression and desires to blitz through the story you are still promised at less a few dozen hours of non-stop engagement. If you're a completionist who hates being bored while doing things, well... for the most part you'll get what you want. I can think of a couple things that can take some time, but nothing that I can think of that is truly unreasonable, and that's coming from a guy who hates hunting down every little thing in videogames (I'm awful at the new Zelda games because of this). There you go. I have more to say, but I don't want to spoil stuff and that whole Gaspard thing was dangerously close to actual spoilers. Luckily I just focused on how mechanics impact that stuff. Go ahead and give the game a shot. I love it, and to be honest with you, even with over 100 hours in this game I haven't completed it on this account. This is just where I've had some fun, and really relished in how complete of a game it feels, how fun and real it can be. Call it nostalgia if you don't have any other ammunition, but this is one hell of a game.

I grew up with this game and the other .hack series, I'm really fond of it and it's so fun to have it on PC finally, and it's so neat they released a 4th game too. I really wish that the first series were available on Steam too, but maybe one day! Even if you've never played a .hack game before, they're pretty unique and they're worth trying.

So despite the ordeal with cloud saves, and while there is a work around. If you're planning to play this strictly on a select device whether it be on a computer/laptop or a steamdeck/Rog/Legion/Etc it plays perfectly well. The issue with that comes from those who wish to play on their computers and then move to a portable device. Other than that 9.5/10 Solid port, finished it 100% no issues anywhere, and i'll say this for those struggling with the Bike missions, all the Playstations input bugs still work.
