tldr; 6.7/10 Lifelong Halo fan. I like it. I'm somewhat disappointed. There are some things I really hate. I don't regret buying it. The gunplay feels typically really good, and the movement feels awesome. You can easily weapon juggle as well which would've made me sad if it wasn't included. The limitless sprinting is good and I'll die on this hill. The motion tracker gives less detail about the size of whatever is moving which is a huge downgrade from every other game in the series. The new voice acting for Cortana and Johnson is usually gratingly bad due to very poor directing more than the (re)writing imo. Keyes and John and Spark are all good. Its like a bad remix of a favourite song. It also feels clashy with the voice acting they chose to keep. The cutscene direction whiplashes between beautiful and mindbogglingly odd. (Very minor spoiler)The choice to have a rictus frozen on the face of the falling marine rather than just a blank look really took me out of the scene, and blunted the spooky effect that was built. It seemed very cartoonish to me(minor spoiler over). Idgaf that Cortana is ugly. I do gaf that she looks and sounds wrong. Same with Johnson. I think most would agree that they nailed his look in H2A. This ain't it. Some of the cutscenes almost look like they're missing some sort of graphic effect or using a low quality texture. Feels really sloppy, and I imagine this wasn't supposed to be their final pass. The remakes of the levels are actually fantastic; Especially missions 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8 are vastly improved by the streamlined level design. They just flow a lot better and downplay the copy paste that Bungie used for them. That said, stealing the banshee in AOTCR brings the banshee's problems to light because the canyon area to fly in is smaller. Unlike in the OG, you can't really shoot straight down. This restriction of maneuverability makes it very easy to overshoot or undershoot your target. The AR slaps now, and behaves like more of a mid range weapon. It deals some really nice damage. The pistol seems mostly the same, though I've noticed that there is a slight delay when swapping to it before you can begin shooting which has gotten me killed a few times. The sniper rifle is nice, but on heroic you can't take down a shield on any elites, making going for a one and done headshot impossible. Extremely unsatisfying. The shotgun sounds and looks powerful, but I think it's the worst the series has ever had. The Halo shotgun has always been my favourite and I really don't like this one mechanically. It seems to have a somewhat random shot spread that widens at very close range. This makes it very inconsistent to use, even against the F___d. Sometimes you blast through an enemy in one hit and sometimes it's like throwing a fistful of gravel at them. This has also gotten me killed several times. The beam rifle is great. Pretty much no notes except for that in the soundscape during large battles, it is incredibly difficult to hear when enemies are using it. The sound effect in previous games had a lot more treble to it and lingered longer, cutting through the chaos. This has led me to deaths by not playing as carefully as I should if I could properly hear that I'm being sniped at. The sentinel beam is so fun. No notes lol. The enemy AI seems very competent; I usually find them flanking me or flushing my position with grenades. At times the elite animations, which are from Halo: Reach really seem to slap me around. Their melee attack does nasty damage, and is so fast. "Skill issue" I know, it just doesn't seem like a positive change to me, as getting in a fist fight with them is extremely risky and feels far more unfair than in Halo: Reach. Conversely, the friendly AI is actually braindead. They clump and get shot, or clump and get naded, or clump and get flooded by small enemies. This is the most ally babysitting I've done since singleplayer L4D. Framerates have been fantastic with my 1% lows being in the high 50s and low 60s. The biggest problem I'm running into is that the game tends to freeze for a whole 2 seconds at a time before returning to normal. Again, this has gotten me killed. The screenshake is too intense, and the filmgrain you can't turn off makes what is a very beautiful game look muddy and ugly. The new missions were just okay. The dialogue between Johnson and John has really good moments, a handful of mediocre moments, and mostly just okay. The levels designs are pretty good, though the colouration throws me for a loop. The issue I found with them is that they frequently lock you in a room where you will fight typically 3 waves of increasingly diffcult enemies which enter the arena from all sides with no way out. It's gank city and got frustrating. Narratively, I don't think it really adds anything to Halo. There is also a section that is pretty much exactly like LNOS in Halo: Reach, but done worse imo. I love it, and I don't like it. For me it's still worth the full price, but holy it could've been better.

To begin, I am a Halo veteran. I played Halo CE when it came out for Xbox, and have played every Halo game since including Halo Wars 1 & 2. I have consumed much of the extra media including books and side projects (movies, webtoons, and comics). Halo more than any other media has probably had more influence on my love of sci-fi than any other franchise except maybe Star Trek. With that disclaimer, I am going to try and keep this review as unbiased as I can. The Good: Graphics: They are amazing. The new engine is buttery smooth and the environments are absolutely gorgeous. From the interior of structures, to the wide open expanse of the surface of the ring, the environment has a lot to look at and appreciate from an aesthetics point of view. Gameplay: The gunplay and strategic positioning is pretty reminiscent of the original game. There are some differences (sprint being one), but I found that the original Halo feel is there, just more fine tuned. It's not quite as janky. If you are a first time Halo player, it will feel a lot slower than a modern shooter like COD or Battlefield, but that's part of the Halo DNA. It rewards methodical target selection and positioning. The Environment: They brought back the original game and feel for sure. A lot of people are claiming that the sense of wonder is gone. I think those same people forget that when Halo released, there was nothing like it. The story was so new and fresh, no one knew what the game was and there was so much mystery around Halo. It's now been 25 years since Halo: CE released and that intervening time has been chock full of additional games, lore, books, movies etc. Almost all of the mystery is gone. Which means for a lot of vet players like me, we can't go back and experience that again for the first time. When my kids get to gaming age, this is the version of Halo I want to introduce them to the Haloverse with. That says a lot about how good this game and its environmental storytelling is. Expanded Weapons Sandbox: We get a whole bunch of new weapons to use in the original setting! What's not to enjoy about that? Enough said. The Meh: Glitches: Definitely some issues with sign-ins, hang ups, and crashes. I wasn't really affected by them, but many people have been, and its a valid issue. Voicelines: Halo Studios decided to redo voicelines from the original instead of taking the original performances. While in most cases it felt like the re-recorded lines were really good, there were the occasional, will say questionable performance. Jen Taylor (Cortana) and Steven Downes (Chief) are top tier voice actors, so I have a feeling it was more of the direction and take selection that brought in the questionable lines. Generally the voice acting was as good as the original. The new additional lines were just fine, and usually added some flavor to what was happening. Pricepoint: This game is fairly expensive, and it's hard to justify that price on a game most people will probably only spend 10 or so hours on while they complete the campaign and extra missions. I honestly would wait for a sale. I am almost at 20 hours because I've been running back through and getting all the collectibles, and will eventually do a LASO run, but if you are just going to one and done the campaign, I would wait until it goes on sale. The bang for your buck is just not there if that's the case. The Bad: The New Missions: Hoh boy, from a story-telling perspective, these were hot garbage. I don't know who wrote the script for these, but inspired they were not. I don't know what it is with modern media script writing, but not everything has to try and be Marvel quip humor. Having Chief finish Johnson's "Chugga Chugga" was just painful. They also tried to drive in the animosity between ODSTs and Spartans in there without explaining why it exists in the first place. To know you have to read the books. And even then, it only really lasts for a single mission with the ODST lady chilling out. There is no real conflict to be had. It could have been an interesting set up and payoff, but it lacks any emotional punch. They try to have a character death have some meaning, but it just ends up coming across as pointless, with zero emotional pay off. Oh and don't get me started on the lore implications of these missions. We have had retcons with Halo Reach superseding Eric Nylund's book the Fall of Reach, but so many small lore issues are broken with this 3 mission jaunt. It's more Halo, which I am all for, but it was rough. No Competitive Multiplayer: Probably the biggest let down of this game is no competitive multiplayer. So many hours spent duking it out during LAN parties or split-screen back in the day. Major missed opportunity here. Its what would have given this game legs beyond just playing the campaign. Most people will run through the campaign once and then be done with it. Maybe ten hours of game time. What made the original Halo's popular was multiplayer. Final Thoughts: It's good. Its not revolutionary or game changing like OG Halo was, but those kind of games are almost once in a generation (maybe console generation). That's it for me. If you have made it to the end of this review, I salute you. Thanks for sticking around.

Its HALO CE refreshed. Price is a bit steep in my opinion but you should know what you are getting. Its a 25 year old game with Great graphics and a few new missions, sprint (which kind of breaks the second half of the game, no spoilers but HALO vets will know) ADS, and a couple of tweaks to maps, oh and modifiers. If this is your first time jumping into the HALO game. Please! Buy the Master Chief Collection FIRST and only come back to this when it is on sale or you fall in love with HALO. It is cheaper and has 5 Halo Games in it. The graphics in the MCC are fine.

Alright, so I've played this a lot at this point and after beating legendary I have come to a few conclusions. The Good: - The game (overall) looks nice, gameplay is solid, it actually feels like Halo - A lot of quality of life changes (Keyes dying doesn't reset you on Truth and Rec, the Maw warthog run makes more sense, the Library is not as much of a slog, etc.) - 4 player coop - The new levels are interesting, I personally enjoyed all of the new enemy and environment models - I liked some (but not all) of the new voice lines - The weapons rebalancing feels nice. While I know some people are disappointed that the magnum no longer one shots hunters, this has been replaced with the energy sword one shotting them. Even on legendary the shotgun also only takes about 2 hits if you're close - Other than some coop connection issues I haven't had any problems running the game on high graphics settings - Leagues better than Anniversary The Bad: - The cadence feels off for a lot of the voice lines. Particularly for Johnson (he sounds alright, but the lines are more slow and relaxed compared to the original which is a downgrade in my opinion) and Cortana (Some of the lines are fine, but in others she talks more like The Weapon/Joy compared to how we're used to hearing Cortana) - Some achievements are bugged right now - In some cutscenes she looks okay, but in others Cortana really does just look like Jerma with a wig and it's kind of distracting lol - Williams in the new missions is really annoying and one note. Her whole schtick is that she's some hardline ODST who hates spartans and by the end she has a little respect (maybe?) but is still annoying. She has no depth and just about all of her dialogue revolves around this - Some areas feel like they have too many enemies. I understand it on levels with the Flood but, for example, Assault on the Control Room has an area with an absurd number of jackals. Also I feel like it's harder to hit the jackals' exposed hand compared to most of the Halo games (excluding the original CE, which I guess would make this accurate lol) - The enemy melee range feels like it's too long - Keybinds reset every game launch, which is really annoying Overall, would I recommend the game? Depends. If you're an old Halo fan that has played the originals/mcc more times than you can count I'd say go for it. It feels fresh while still mostly feeling like CE and I've had a lot of fun with it. Also you can play it with more friends. Maybe wait for a sale if you're unsure. If you're new the franchise? No. The original is still the best introduction to the series in my opinion. Go buy MCC and play that until you know CE inside and out, then come back to this.
