If you are looking for a good old boomer shooter experience, this is NOT it. Contrary to what many others say, this game focuses more on exploration and experimenting with items than it does actual combat. I actually appreciate what it tries to do, sometimes. Trust me when I say, I have read every scroll and I make sure to mark points in my map. I still have to spend at least 1 hour per level trying to just figure out where the objectives actually are or how to get to them. It becomes extremely tedious, and slow and monotonous. Due to it's engine limitations, many areas look too similar and quest items will simply blend into the environment even when they glow and sparkle saying "PICK ME UP NOW". I recommend keeping a guide handy when playing through 'Crystal Heart', the first episode of the campaign. As without one, I assure you the first level will begin to frustrate you and that frustration will not end for several hours of gameplay. But when you actually do get past the objective based issues, the combat is super fluid, enemy design is very balanced in my opinion. The weapons are beautiful as well as the sounds they emit. Everything just has such a huge amount of care and love taken into it art style wise. And the music is awesome, just heavy riffing with some dark ambient tracks to fill the time between fights. I recommend doing research on this game, and take all the positive reviews with a bit of salt. Because they are not telling you the whole story. TL;DR = Tedious objectives, Tons of reading and treasure hunting with nothing to do in-between, confusing level design. But great combat, great art style, great music, and I now have an orc lady obsession that I can't keep down. Purchase with care.

Very good Boomer-Shooter style game, which adds quit a lot to that classic formula. First off I have to say, the story really got me hooked. You play as a Half-Orc woman who is searching for her disappeared Orc-Clan sisters. This journey leads you to many different places. The games is split in two parts, whereas the first one sticks a bit more to the classic gameplay of Boomer-Shooters, the second adds a bunch of RPG elements, such as Quests, Merchants, Sidekicks, Riddles, etc. I did enjoy most of it especially the Atmosphere, Music, Story, Gameplay. But I also found that the second half of part 2 drags on way to long. It throws you in this huge and confusing map with a ton of quest to do and just very few and basic hints where to go and what to do. And this is the very first game where I got overwhelmed by the options menu!

this game is fun for so many reasons other than the beautifully drawn orc ladies on the cover. if fast paced action packed doom mixed with fun puzzles and amazing talent in writing, music / sound, art and all things world building in a neat, well maintained bundle sounds like a game you'd love, hedon is that game

This is top-tier boomer shooter action with some light puzzling and sprawling level exploration. The backtracking did get a bit annoying at times when I couldn't find what to do, but it takes nothing away from this awesome game. Crystal-punk is a fantasy subgenre I'd never seen before and it's a real fun time, I liked the inversion of orcs as the good guys and elves being terrible villains. The hot orc pixel babes are definitely a bonus.

35 hours in and nearing the end of the game. I hope. First things first: this is NOT a boomer shooter. It has boomer shooter elements, but it is not one. There's no boomer shooter that has such massive maps, so much emphasis on platforming and puzzle solving, so much dialogue and story elements. If you go into this game expecting a 1:1 boomer shooter, you are in for disappointment as you find yourself backtracking huge maps looking for the next item that unlocks progress. Hunting for keys and keycards in classic shooters got nothing on this game. That said. I enjoy the game. It has big maps, characterization, very interesting puzzles and challenges, and requires you to think things through to proceed. The first map is probably the worse I've played in any shooter ever: it's long, convoluted, and ultimately boring. But the game slowly gets better, and as you get used to how the game works in relation to standard boomer shooters, it gets more enjoyable. The game's greatest strength is its ambition, which at the same time is its greatest weakness. You have loads of inventory items, but managing so many is very cumbersome, as GZDoom is not designed with this in mind. The maps are huge, but the GZDoom wireframe map is rather useless and you can get lost easily because of how many layers of altitude the maps have. The backtracking can get on your nerves in the larger levels, as it is not always immediately obvious what you need to do to proceed: in a boomer shooter you know encountering a red-locked door means you need a red key/card. In Hedon, it's most likely you need to acquire three other keys before you get the key necessary to unlock this door. Some of the puzzles are obtuse, and you may not be aware you need to solve a puzzle at all. Some of the secrets are far easier to get than knowing how to proceed in the campaign. And the game has far, far too much platforming for my taste, with death pits or otherwise cumbersome "make a 20 second climb and try again" sections that encourage quicksaving. But overall, I recommend it just because of how unique an experience it is. Just remember this is not a boomer shooter but an action-adventure FPS and you'll be good to go.
