An incredible boomer shooter with rich mechanics, deep lore, and an enthralling narrative. I loved playing this game and intend to go back to play on Bearzerker at some point (which is a special melee only difficulty). The pacing and balancing was great, and I actually really enjoyed the boss fights in this game. I admit I did look up a secrets guide, but only because I didn't want to miss anything. Highly, highly recommend for anyone who loves this kind of gameplay
This is a truly righteous gem of a game. To just get it out of the way, this game is horny. It's very horny. But it's only mildly NSFW... No more than an R-rated movie would be. The horniness actually made me sleep on getting it. Tall muscular women are,,,Kinda my thing, and I didn't really feel the need for another Karlach to drool over. I'm not ashamed but just... I got room mates, ya know? All that said, the gratuitous cleavage actually seems to make sense with the lore of the game, somehow. Don't ask me how. It just does. Anyway. The game. One of the best boomer shooters I've ever played. A shining gem of what a determined artist can create if given the time and resources. The game really strikes the balance between peaceful and cozy and absolute all out carnage. Some of the levels (especially in the first episode, Crystal Heart), I just wanna chill out and live in. The weapons are all awesome. The Crushbow and Hellclaw are my favies. PRO TIP: Add in an alternate binding for reload (Dev allows multiple keybinds per function, bless him) because some weapons have special functions when reload is held. Something that lets you have full access to your WASD because holding R makes using them awkward. The only criticism I really have for the game is that it can be overly complicated and cryptic at times. If you don't play the game for a week or two mid-level, be prepared to not know where the heck you are and what you need to do. So give the game the Dark Souls treatment: Try to play it without a guide, but don't be ashamed to use one if you need it. There's a really good walkthrough on gamefaqs (What is this 2004?) and another good one with maps on a Steam community page. Seriously, get it. It's a blast. And it's got orc babes.
In a sea of mediocre cookie-cutter boomer shooters, Hedon stands out. The game features detailed worldbuilding, a rich story, and visceral combat. Starting the game off with no memory of how you ended up here, you retrace your steps and learn about the demonic invasion of your world and everything about your past in the once lively settlements and living quarters you now wander. Exploring and fighting through the large, sprawling Metroidvania-inspired levels is a joy, and there is so much to uncover in each level, ranging from neat secrets to mementos of your fallen sisters serving as environmental storytelling and a reward for paying attention to your surroundings. The atmosphere of the levels in the game is sublime, ranging from the earlier, creepier, late-to-the-party vibe of the first few levels all the way to the adrenaline-pumping hell-show of most of the later levels. Overall the pacing is very good; the build-up and crescendo events of the game are all very well done and deserved. After you dispatch all demonic foes in your vicinity, you'll mostly be looking for keys and/or solving puzzles in the large levels; it can be a bit daunting, but if you pay attention to the game and use your map and brain, it usually isn't too much of a hassle. Albeit sometimes it is a bit much. There were times when I had to look up guides, and I didn't have an "Of course, how did I miss that?" moment, but rather a "How the hell was I supposed to figure that out!?" moment. Unfortunately it's the norm with these kinds of games, but with the scale of the levels in this, it can just be mind-numbing at times even when you put your mind to it. The silver lining is that the maps are always filled to the brim with enemies for you to take out your bloodlust on using your large arsenal of weapons, all with their own uses and gimmicks. Each weapon comes with an alternative firing mode, allowing you to get even more creative with how you gore your foes. It extends to utility as well; in some cases, you can use the explosive crossbow to rocket jump and skip platforming in many parts of the game, if you can spare the health, that is. Every sprite in the game is lovingly hand-drawn and well implemented into the world, with nothing looking out of place or jarring. The story has you travelling from druid groves, frozen wastelands, demonic mansions, factories, and hell itself; the story never gets predictable. Once you actually reunite with your clan is when the game really gets interesting. Aided by charming characters (the shady fixer comes to mind!) and a very homey feeling in the camps/bases that are set up through the story. With side quests and tons of dialogue to sift through, I found myself helping around just for the love of the game and my companions whilst not being concerned with a reward or progression a lot of the time. From start to end the story had me hooked, and after many moments that either made me laugh out loud, gasp, or scream out in a blood-fueled frenzy, I found the game ending exactly how I wanted it to. Leaving me satisfied and even craving more. I cannot recommend this game enough. And I can't believe I went the whole review without bringing it up, but if you're anything like me and like big, strong, sexy ladies, this game should also be right up your alley. ;)
