Hedon Bloodrite is a good FPS made for perverts. Then it turns into Hexen made for perverts. Which is still good, but combing through large interconnected maps in order to find one small bauble that is necessary to proceed is not the ideal way to have fun. Oh well, at least the map design is generally quite good. And the weapons feel great. And there is lot of interesting worldbuilding and a variety of characters with history. This is a rare thing to have in GZDoom total conversion and the writing is even better than most major video games. The first half of the game is a lot better due to tighter map design. But overall, Hedon is a wonderful game worthy of any FPS fan's time. And you get a long campaign for a cheap price. Can't wait to see what the developer creates next! 4/5
Growing up with a cheapo laptop, I latched pretty quick onto DOOM mods. I remember spending hours browsing Doomworld or the ZDoom forums, marvelling at the stuff people were putting out. Entirely for free, mind you. And even with all that this game flew under my radar! After I finally caved and bought it in a sale, I have to admit I felt dumb for having put it off for so long. It's *so good*. While I know people can work indescribable wizardry with modern Doom sourceports, the care and love put into the aesthetics and level design is really put into perspective when you realize it was (more or less) made on a thirty-something year old framework! You play as a (very) buff, blue half-orc named Zan who, after having woken up in a damp cavern, must journey through various incredibly detailed and very intricate levels, ranging from lush forests and dwarven foundries to towering mountains, to stop whoever massacred her orcish brethren.. by massacring her way through hordes of cultists and demons. It's a very magitech/crystalpunky setting, with lots of glowing crystals and heavy machinery alongside medieval fantasy hearths and fur rugs. And built orcish ladies. With exposed midriffs. Much of the story is told through notes, with some enviromental details along the way and a couple of honestly very cool setpieces. Even within the constraints of the Doom engine, there's lots of painstakingly detailed bars, forests, barracks and ruins to blast your way through, all of which are full of pathways and hidden caches of goodies. Of course, though, it *is* still the Doom engine. I love it, but I'd understand if you were put off by the sprites. Speaking of, just about the only complaint I'd have is the fact the animations could've done with a handful of extra frames, both for the weapons and the enemies. It's just nitpicking though, and the art itself is lovely and consistent. The levels themselves are huge. I wouldn't describe them as mazey, but I can absolutely see them being overwhelming. This is compounded by the fact that most of the guidance is within notes left in the levels which, this being a Doom sourceport, are all 2D. The level design does its best to make them obvious, pinning them against walls or atop well-lit tables, but they sometimes fail to stand out. And, to be honest, I kinda loved it? Having to scour my way through ransacked buildings and keeping an eye out for clues helped me find lots of hidden nooks and crannies, which felt really fun and rewarding. It also helped that the enviroments are a joy to ogle at. It's definitely old-school in the sense that there's very little handholding, though. Paying attention and making sure to interact with nameplates and parchments is a must in order to have a clear picture of what a level's asking of you. All in all, I'd say this is a very well designed, engaging and surprisingly measured experience. There's some more combat-heavy bits, sure, and you've still gotta clear out the levels, but the general pace is slower than your average throwback shooter. If you dig exploration and puzzle solving with a healthy sprinkling of combat, Hedon's absolutely worth your money. Also there's lots of hot orc ladies and hot goblin ladies.
This game is so good I can't even believe it is a doom total conversion. Phenomenal level design. Good action sequences. Difficulty definitely picks up later on but it never feels unfair. It's just good fun the whole time. Bloodrite is particularly well designed. There's so much content here. Things were getting pretty intense in bloodrite and I was like surely this is the last level, the boss is coming up. Then I'm hit with an "Act II". PRAISE THA LORD. If you're a fan of boomer shooters, why are you still reading this review? Buy the game.
