Oh. My. God. It happened. Someone actually did it. The game has quiet menu music and master volume set to 60% by default so it doesn't blow your eardrums out when you first start it up. 10/10. The GOAT. Oh yeah, animals are cool.

I don't write Steam reviews often but I needed to for this game, because someone said "Its pretty, but is it FUN?" as part of a critique and that was enough to make me hesitate to play it when it first released. That was very dumb of me. The amount you'll enjoy this game will correlate directly to how much you as an individual love animals. Are you the kind of person who pet Trico in Last Guardian long after the mechanical benefits had been met? Do you like feeding your pokemon poffins in Pokemon Amie? Do you always give custom names to YOUR pet in World of Warcraft even when it looks the same as everyone else's? Then you will love this game.

Herdling is a step in the right direction for Okomotive. Far changing tides was their last game, and it suffered from some serious artistic issues. In my review of it, I went as far as to call Far changing tides vapid. Okomoitive's first game, Far Lone Sails, was nothing short of a masterpiece, but I don't think Okomotive has quite yet grasped at why that was. Herdling, though, is a step in a better direction. It is a game that is not afraid to slow down and just let you take it in. That was something that Far changing tides really suffered from, it was too afraid to let you be unoccupied. Herdling focuses on the art of the game, rather than forcing itself to be 'more game' for the sake of being more game. Not everyone will appreciate that, but that is just the nature of art. The game is has a great, often comfy, vibe to it, but there is still something missing. The game is very "Journey" coded, and as someone who adores that game, I can absolultely respect that, but Herdling lacks a real message or theme of its own. Journey's message was that of the Monomyth. It was not just about wandering the desert till you reach a peak, it was about growing, struggling, then RETURNING to help others along that path, IE, the Monomyth. Far: Lone Sails, had a heavy theme of loss, pushing through hardship, and environmental destruction at the hands of corporations and consumerism. Far changing tides, though, had no real message or theme to it. Even having an achievement as ironic as "now what" so firmly summarizing the generally vapid experience of that game. But Herdling, also lacks a solid theme. It is not as bad as changing tide was, but much of the game feels like it is there, just to be there. You are hearding animals, because you can. Heading to an end goal of, something, because you can. The vibe of the game generally helps make up for this, but this lack of strong theme or message is what will keep Herdling from having much staying power after the first playthough. Journey is a game I played through countless times, and each time that strong theme of the Monomyth resonates in an almost meditative way. I also still play Far: Lone Sails frequently, because it too has such strong themes that continue to resonate on future playthroughs. I don't feel like Herdling's vague theme of found animal family is quite strong enough to not grow old on consecutive playthroughs. But generally, the game is art, and it is quality art at that. Okomotive learned from their mistake in changing tides, and I am certain that once they learn how to make stronger themes and messages in their games, they will rise to making games on the level of the likes of Journey.

Was playing this game when I learned my mother had Alzheimer's. Petting calicorns made me feel slightly better.

This is a little gem of a game. Short, meditative, beautiful and will leave you feeling better than when you started.
