If you're playing this game just to play it as a momma lynx protecting her cubs, one-hundred percent recommend it. Is it realistic? Not really, but I did enjoy it! The collection aspect can unequivocally kick rocks. I wasn't sure if I was even going to finish it, and if not for the tireless efforts of dozens of people creating a detailed guide to locations I'm sure I never would have. I didn't struggle keeping my cubs alive, and even with the harder difficulty and having the mountain "threats" on I was always able to keep my cubs from danger. If you're looking to one-hundred percent the game, be prepared for a slog, otherwise enjoy yourself and watch those pudgy little cubs grow bigger than you until eventually they give you a final farewell before running off to start their own families.
First and foremost, it is important to note that Shelter 2 was released in 2015 when wildlife simulators were still new and not as deeply developed, and it can not be on par with modern wildlife games today. However, this lack of complicated mechanics is also what I believe makes Shelter 2 such a relaxing and wonderful game! The graphics are unique, consisting of abstract patterns and wonderfully coordinated, thanks to color grading depending on the season. Details in the form of cute kitten animations, deer herd variations, anthills, etc., make it a pleasure to sit back and enjoy the moment! <3 Important to note that in the game there are two main goals: fostering your lynx kittens by hunting food and protecting them during certain events (eg wolves or storms ), and the goal to explore and collect collectibles around the three different maps (four, if counting Mountains DLC). From my perspective, the casual player would have a great time playing this 1-2 times and will not come across any game-breaking bugs during the total playtime of around 2-5 hours. If any, it would probably be slight animation or graphic errors. I would also recommend buying this game for a discounted price due to its short game time. Furthermore, a completianist (like me~) might have a playtime of 30+ hours (if using guides) and will get across some bugs, due to certain faults with some collectibles being out-of-bounds (but still able to obtain thanks to glitches). Another con of playing for this long is that the options for fur colors are repeated, unless making a new family tree for your lynx character. If you love collecting, then there is nothing wrong with the full price! All in all, I would review Shelter 2 as a game fitting for you if you are willing to play a slower-paced exploration and survival game where it is meant for you to enjoy the moment. :]
I utterly loved this game. I got aware of this game through a post talking about lynx appreciation, and I'm glad I found it as a huge lynx lover. Was really able to get into being a lynx mother caring for her young, and deeply mourned the loss of any kit that died. The world feels so alive, and so so dangerous. I always felt on edge, especially with the sheer number of foxes and eagles. The act of hunting, especially big prey, is SO invigorating. The agony of hearing a kit die is also heartbreaking, and fuels the passion to make sure the next generation survives. I was invested enough to mentally come up with my own stories. The triumph of having all four kits live was especially special. It felt like a death curse that had been lifted from the poor family, and the past generations being freed. Survival mode was a good challenge beyond this. Having to control your stamina and keeping yourself fed along with the kits is extremely hard to manage, along with the constant migration. It makes you really have to plan what you do each season, and how hard you need to work to make them all live to adulthood. The art direction and style is also very pretty. It's easy on the eyes, and feels alive even though it is so geometric. Only gripes are similar to their game Paws. Firstly, I had a kit just...disappear as an adult on my first playthrough. There was no fog event happening, and nothing going on. Just one second he was there, and the next he was gone and marked as dead. They had all been fed, the kits were adolescent, and there were no predators around. and 100% completion. Dear LIFE, do not even bother trying to 100% the game unless you have a sick urge to, or just want to waste a bunch of time. There's over 500 collectibles, and they are so SO hard to see. Even with a good computer and eyesight, they blend in to the ground too well. I don't need everything to be obvious, but with that many collectibles, not even being able to see most are ridiculous. Several are also bugged, or require some weird steps to collect that no one would be able to figure out without datamining. Having this ridiculous collectible system was not necessary for the game, and just the unique rare items would have sufficed. Again, doesn't affect general gameplay at ALL, but there's a reason only 1% of players even have the collect all X thing achievements.
This game is very cute, very somber, very sad. It is your own little nature documentary. Always stressful being a single mom in the woods with three kittens in tow. Nothing quite as heart wrenching as realizing one of your kittens is missing and trying to retrace your steps to see if they just got lost in the brush or taken by a predator.
