They got me. I absolutely love this game. Bright, clean, fantastic aesthetic. I don't think I've had more than a single crash and can't think of any bugs I've had to deal with beyond the ones my units are fighting. I really like the variety of game types as opposed to a single way to play the game. There's a lot more unlockable attributes than I thought there would be and I unlock more with every game which means ever more combinations to change up how I approach each game. More importantly THE DEVS ARE PAYING ATTENTION. Their last update covered some of my fundamental hopes for quality of life improvements. Keep up the good work!

Updating my Review after losing a whole day to this game. First of all not at all an RTS guy but this subgenre itches something in my head. This game is everything that "They are Billions" should've been, progression is good and does not feel like a chore, the rougelite gameplay loop is super fun, trying out new tactics with the 2 deities (a third one is on its way). The Essences can upgrade your Units/Towers drastically so placing them strategically in your Deity screen is key. but there are three things that really bother me 1. please add an option to disable or lessen the amount of unit chatter after playing a unit based build for 3 skirmishes it really gets annyoing 2. the pathfinding from both the enemies and the player units is sometimes horrendous. 3. Biome variety, you can select your map type but I think its just what ressource is the dominant one (stone, wood and a mix of both), the map always looks the same, same trees, same ground texture and so on Please dont try to add a Campaign. It doesn't work for this kind of game.

If you enjoy RTS games like They are Billions, Diplomacy is not an Option or Age of Darkness then Here Comes The Swarm is definitely worth trying. The game has a strong and satisfying gameplay loop, with both a solid skirmish mode and a roguelike mode that adds extra replayability. But also a nice endless mode with frequent challenges on their in the community. The gameplay is the real highlight : challenging, strategic, and highly engaging, constantly pushing you to improve your tactics. What I love the most is the build variety through the essence system. I've tried 3 extremely different strategies (based on different unit) at the highest difficutly and it was extremely fun to experiement with. It has a solid basis for replayability and increasing the content easily. The core design is very well executed and shows huge potential for the future. With an active developement team who frequently releases meaningful updates and engages with the community, the game feels like it’s only going to get better from here.

I've played similar games and this is the first where I've found endless mode is balanced just right. In other games you destroy several waves with ease, then suddenly a single wave gets through and it's game over. In this game, the waves gradually bring you down. After some confident and well defeated waves, they break through and cause some damage, you try to rebuild some of what you lost and scramble together a defence, you survive another wave, but you take even more damage to your defences and your economy. But you live. You start having upkeep and population problems because of the damages, so you get rid of a few resource buildings, sell off some excess resources, and quickly rebuild a defence again. Finally it comes to a point you have salvaged all you could and your defence just wasn't enough. When I lost my 3 hour endless mode It was 2 bugs out of thousands that made it to the centre of my base, I killed 1 of them but the other finished the job. It came down to just 1 bug. But I knew I wouldn't have survived the next wave anyway. In other games in the same genre, you go from confidence to sudden destruction and annoyance, anti climactic. In this game You go from confidence to concern to hope to desperation and finally acceptance, accepting that you wont survive this wave and you had a good run. They describe the early access build as a vertical slice and I agree with that assessment. What's present is well polished and very playable. We are seeing an almost completely finished 1st slice of the game. There are a few slices to come, but the first slice is a great start.

tldr: If you like killing lots of bugs and are looking for a solid game to do so, this is it. I've been fortunate enough to be part of this game from an early stage as a playtester and have already spent many hours on it and I love it. It's great at so many things. Want to kill thousands of things? Just start up a skirmish game. Think it's too hard? Just set the difficulty down and try again. Not hard enough? Crank it all the way up to infestation 5. Want some randomization? Play an expedition for incremental changes per map. Want to see how far you can get against infinitely scaling enemies? Give Endless mode a try. And don't worry if you don't think you have the micro to manage it all. Just pause the game and give out all your orders in your own time. I for sure need it :P The game also supports a bunch of playstyles with their deity system. Want to be turtling your way to victory? Go Tiamman which enhances your towers and walls. Want to have a mass of units and just clear the whole map? Play Karkadann which boosts your unit production and strength. Then there is the costumisation. As you play the game you unlock more and more powerups which you can get access to throughout your games. They can completely change your playstyle, from adding reflect damage to your knights to making your healers into killing machines. Your ballista towers can turn in to basically a shotgun shooting 5 bolts at a time. To me this has been a great way to spend my time, from being able to just chill in an easy skirmish to go full sweat in infestation 5 endless no-pauze mode. In terms of it being early access this game feels very well put together. Generally there are maybe some minor bugs which the devs are actively working on fixing. They've also been active on the discord, taking part in conversations. That much is apparent with each patch they bring out which always improves the game in one way or another often taking into account suggestions and feedback which were given on the Discord. The game itself runs smoothly, the units just do what you tell them to do (well, almost always). The large swarms of enemies feel fun to play against. Your upgrades feel very impactful and you can make so many different builds which can cater to any playstyle you'd like. For the price, you won't regret this. Even if the game stays in the state it currently is. But better yet, they're still going to add more content. Which is going to make this game even more fun.
