This game starts off as a fun horde-fighting game, but i might have made a mistake by doing too many side-missions, for of those there are MANY. The story itself is rather short and the story missions are the most unique in terms of layout and gameplay. So it seems they filled out the rest of the game by giving the player 200+ sidemissions that they can choose to do. I dont know how many i did, but the mistake was absolutely doing too many side missions, it started to get too grindy after a while and made me lose interest in the game because of it, after my now 33 hours ill probably never play it again. It is fun though, if you dont overdo it. You place turrets and a few hero characters out on the map that you can move around to help out in various ways of taking care of the horde that attacks your buildings or movable units (pending on mission type). During the missions you get XP that when you level up survivors-like style get to choose an upgrade (choose 1 of 3). At first this system is good, but the more you play the more restricted the system feels and you cant get any upgrades for this outside the missions to help you out, like at all, every mission gives you around 10 or so upgrades (maybe more) and its like that no matter the difficulty you choose, so eventually you just feel stuck in the same loop you had from the start of the game. Some of the upgrades you get from leveling up during mission is get 1 more option per level up, or more xp per kill or more xp per drill and so on, and i feel like those things shouldve been upgrades you could work towards outside of missions, but instead the system stagnates, gets stiff and non progressive. Again, i might have done too many sidemissions so this got extremely apparent for me. overall, my enjoyment score for this game is about 71% I'll probably never play the game again. Also, some missions want you to survive for 15 minutes (on hard) but by holding spacebar down you can shave that down to 7.5 min (i think it doubles speed), anyway, these missions really hammer in that the XP system was made for about 15 minutes or so of gameplay at most, post 15 the xp gain slows down so much that it takes almost 10 minutes in between each level up (again, hold spacebar to shave the time down). Even if they did patch in an upgrade system for how many choices per level you get and xp gain, ill still probably never play it again.
While the core mechanics are genuinely impressive and offer a satisfying tactical foundation, the experience suffers from a lack of mission variety that makes long sessions feel like a chore. It’s a fun, engaging distraction in short bursts, but the repetitive nature of the gameplay makes it hard to recommend at full price; definitely wait for a sale.
IDUN is an enjoyable take on the Tower Defense genre. The gameplay is exactly what you see on the box; You shoot bugs, move turrets and a couple units around in a pseudo-RTS fashion, and work with a very basic meta-upgrading system to make your selection of defenses stronger. It is a fast-paced game where individual "rounds" take 2-15 minutes, typically around 5. The game handles literal thousands of enemies being on-screen at once pretty well too. There are several gamemodes that change up the core mechanics, several enemies that require special attention to handle, and a few simple modifiers applied on a per-mission basis. There are a LOT of missions to play, despite their contents not actually varying that much. My only note of warning is that the game is entirely AI voice-acted and it does not sound very good. However, the voicelines/dialog are not a major feature and can be entirely skipped through without missing much; the story kinda tells itself. I would honestly prefer to see Simlish or another bark text variant used, I feel like that would add more character to the characters without requiring voice actors.
