This is still a great game, the 15.2 hours of play time does not seem right to me, that was probably on the last play through 2 years ago haha. To give you an idea of battle concepts Land battles go for the super realism approach, it takes time to walk across the map, your soldiers will fatigue, your formations are hugely important (as any Sharpe fan would already know). Slow firing, then take it to melee as wasting time on shooting a small unit may cost you elsewhere on the map etc. Unit match-ups are important, but more beyond the "this unit will beat that unit", bigger battles require taking the flanks, so you may actually use your most powerful units to take on the weaker enemy units to quickly overcome the line, whilst hoping your medium units can hold off long enough against the enemy superior units for you to flank. Charging cavalry is a good way to get them killed, if you don't stop them charging into square, they will carry on, as orders are orders. The enemy will (if they have had the training) always form square on a cavalry charge, these are for winning the flanks, not head on battles. Garrisioning in buildings is great, unless the enemy has superior foot melee or cannon, then you put your unit into a "fish in barrel" type scenario. So, be behind the building until their foot get closer, then occupy the building, your shots then count for more. Choosing which units to sacrifice and where to take losses for the best overall success is really the name of the game in even land battles. It has some really good maps, full battle maps and replications (within reason) of historical battle locations. There is diplomacy, how you behave and what you do is important. But more important is the choice of political regime, absoute monarchy, totalitarian dictatorship etc. So you can choose not to use the formal declaration of war method, but, not many other civilisations will look fondly upon that barbaric behaviour. Navel battles are probably still really good by today's standards, sink with cannon balls or impair with chain shot, then reduce the numbers with ball shot, board and take as a prize to add to your fleet. When the fleets get big, it does get a little bit micro, as you both move and fire the ships, how you do that, the spread of the shot and the range of the enemy needs a lot of management. Campaign map It is less about base building, more about world wide building placement, from local buildings to support military and civil requirements all the way to embassies in foreign lands so allow better diplomacy based on relationship. There is some unit change based on the country recruit from, there are also some faction differences. As far as the game being simple, if you play as GB, it is impossible to lose, you would have to really try to lose, reason being is hugely powerful navy, no route via land, you can easily control the oceans of the world and never have to worry about your capital. Playing as them makes navel battles boring in the long game, by the time you get to the big powerhouse ships, it is pointless doing a battle beyond auto resolve. So GB is Easy mode, great to play to get to grips with the game and what it expects of you, and a really fun first play through, becomes pretty clear why the tiny island had such a big empire, but the challenge comes from playing as the other countries.
