I really enjoyed this game! It’s backed by fantastic performances from the actresses, a solid narrative concept, and top-tier fan service. However, a few narrative shortcomings prevent it from reaching its absolute full potential. To sum it up: In Thailand, It feels like a delicious plate of Basil Fried Rice without a fried egg, eaten with only a spoon and no fork. It’s still very tasty, but you can’t help feeling something is missing. . SPOILER WARNING This review contains major structural and plot spoilers for Inner Scales 1: Choice. While it doesn't spoil every detail, it touches on core narrative progression and character dynamics. Read at your own risk! . When looking at the narrative, there are two distinct perspectives to consider. First is the male lead, Zhang Cheng, who feels surprisingly plain from the player's point of view. He acts mostly like a delivery boy—delivering food, chatting with eight captive heroines, and eventually escaping with just one. He lacks the active struggle or problem-solving agency seen in protagonists like Ren Xing from Back 1. That said, his passive behavior is somewhat justified by realism. Strictly following orders is the safest choice after discovering a body in an inmate uniform near the perimeter. Furthermore, Part 1 heavily nerfs him to build a baseline for character growth in future installments. On the other hand, the game truly shines in how it handles the eight heroines. Their four-day progression under high-stakes emotional pressure is written exceptionally well. Day 1 starts with fear and confusion as they are trapped alone and suspicious of the protagonist. By Day 2, panic escalates as they are forced into inmate uniforms and learn about the dead body, realizing their time is running out. Day 3 forces desperation, leading them to share deep vulnerabilities to convince the protagonist to save them, even when he responds with his own helplessness. Finally, Day 4 becomes a do-or-die moment where they put everything on the line, including physical devotion, to survive or gain closure. The underlying lore and connection to other games also add great depth. The eight girls seem to be targeted because of their deep emotional and psychological struggles, ranging from family issues and debts to workplace burnout and extreme panic. Resolving these internal issues through a genuine bond with the protagonist seems to be the key to their escape. Furthermore, the Easter eggs and crossover endings cleverly tie into the alternate dimensions seen in Back 1 and Back:Fade, laying an exciting foundation for Part 2. Overall, the game offers a smooth system with easy scene navigation, especially after recent developer patches. The fan service is top-tier with unforgettable moments across all four days, and the teased sequel mechanics make me genuinely hyped for what's next. Despite the linear protagonist, it remains a very enjoyable experience. If you like story-driven FMV games with great character interactions, it is definitely worth playing!
Eight familiar faces from my favorite FMV titles come together in this one. The cast alone is worth the price—big names, solid acting, and plenty of fan service scenes that don't disappoint. The setting is interesting: trapped in a prison-like building with surveillance everywhere, you deliver meals to eight women for four days and must choose who to save. However, the story is extremely thin. Dialogue is repetitive, scenes stay the same throughout, and you'll sit through nearly identical conversations eight times per day. UI is basic with no proper flowchart, and some endings are locked behind real-time unlocks or old game achievements. Bottom line: buy it if you're a fan of these actresses and want some eye candy. If you're here for story or meaningful gameplay, skip it. Hope the sequel gets a better script.

Finally finished the whole game at nearly 12 hours. Story-wise, yeah, not much to desire, we all know we bought this to support our favorite actresses. We've met them in previous games we played and can't just pass up a new game they're in. The girls get kidnapped, you can save 1 at a time, and you eventually come to your senses as the original main character from Undead Realm: Ego and the Back series, Ren Xing, and Ye Tan is still your partner by the end, investigating anomalies along with Gao Yan. Wish Mystery Crown would at least have good enough sales to follow-up on this cause yeah, it was bleak as it didn't really explain why those specific girls got kidnapped and by who. Just that we escaped with 1 of them each time until we woke up by the end, realizing it was all a hallucination. It was most probably an easter egg for Ye Tan and Ren Xing but yeah, wish we can have more explanation in case a sequel arrives. Stayed for the cast, played for the cast, enjoyed the cast.
