Guan guan is LOVE! There are some bugs to take note of, especially when skipping parts and the proper date scenes wouldn't show up initially due to my save continuing from the demo version... BUT This absolutely rocks! 10/10, an outstanding FMV experience. The rise and fall and rise again of the MC, the dates, romance, action sequences, QTEs, risk and rewards, I absolutely loved the game. Guan guan is just simply the best. Wish to see more games with her!

Revenge is a dish best served cold, but it tastes even sweeter when made with love. The VIG is a fantastic third-person FMV drama game about revenge. Its branching-narrative, strong acting, clever story, and authentic romance make it easy to recommend, although narrative shortcomings and technical issues hold it back. You pay as Xie En, who was wrongfully imprisoned for years after his boss set him up to take the fall for shoddy work practices. You assume the identity of Wu Wei and aim to embezzle millions of dollars from the boss’s company as payback. The narrative is clear and well structured. Choices feel significant and the story branches nicely. The game does not treat the audience as idiots; those with a keen eye will fail less. Even toward the end, when main objectives are complete, it has a few tricks up its sleeve. Early choices filter into future chapters, like when you pick up some lipstick. And bad decisions cause early endings. The primary way to gain seniority at the company is to exploit colleagues. Don’t be shocked if you catch feelings. There is a surprisingly large amount of awesome romance, with three main love interests. Two are colleagues, working in the same office, and the third is the company president. Guan Xinling is a young and kind colleague, and she is one of the best love interests the genre has seen. Chen Xiaoman appears to be a cold opportunist, but her back-story and mannerisms make her almost as good. Your boss, Zhang Yun’er, is domineering but not made of ice. At predefined points, you go on ‘dates’ with either of the two colleagues. These have branching choices, but such options are not shown on the timeline. Maintain good rapport with both and you can go on a hilarious dual lunch date. Romance with the boss is baked into the story, and not as casual. While the game has good endings, Yun’er’s best is text only and the others are too brief. Even though most scenes are filmed in third-person, the romance parts frequently use first-person close-ups. This is a great way to intensify connection and make it appear a bit more like a typical dating sim, while having all the third-person benefits. Sadly the game has a few too many technical quirks. The worst is that it doesn’t reliably save progress; it might forget you got an item or change favor values. This meant having to play things several times to access certain branching paths. There was also an infuriating audio sync issue that seems rare. Such a shame when the majority of audio is live from on-set. The game takes approximately 4 hours to finish and under 11 to see everything. Video quality is very good and translation is above average, with English text on props, despite choice-text problems. Even though it is not quite perfect, The VIG is packed with flavor and absolutely worth tasting, hot or cold.

Edit: Just finished the game on my desktop after the Steam Deck version is buggy (its stated as unsupported but it works through GE-Proton) I liked the story of this game and the setting. It has a lot of high stakes moments throughout. Romance in Asian FMVs are a must and this game has 3 characters for you to choose on. They are vital to the plot as well at some points, some more than the others. I think more Asian FMVs should learn a thing or two about creating a high stakes thriller and suspenseful FMVs while not neglecting the romance aspect of FMVs. The major letdown is the final few chapters where the plot began to unravel itself. The protagonist have worked his way up in the company, holding key positions in the company but he threw that all away for unclaimed 2 million dollars a few years ago. I mean logically, he was about 3-4 steps away from controlling the company, why would he throw that all away to be a fugitive? I expected more office politics and maneuvering in the final few chapters but the plot went sideways soon after. I still recommend this game granted if they fixed some of the video playbacks, and having to go through some scenes to "retain" the memory of collecting some items and some choices are hidden in English due to the overflow of text from the translation. 7.5/10

It's only March, but if this is not the FMV of the year, there would have to be some pretty amazing games to top this, and if so, we'll take them. There are still a lot of bugs, and the English subs have plenty of issues, but the dev team have been hard at work pushing updates. Other than those, just about everything is top tier. The writing, the directing, the cast, the music and music directing. Too often music is just a prop added later, but here it's used as a powerful tone setting force. Aside from the bugs, it's hard to find anything that could have been done better. Also, haven't cried this many man tears since Expedition 33. Very much recommended.
