Good Contra Clone game, with tight controls, good music and good enemy design. The maps are good as well.

*Iron Meat* is a retro-inspired run-and-gun game heavily influenced by classics like *Contra* and *Metal Slug*. It offers intense action and a distinct, gory aesthetic where human and machine are fused with grotesque "meat" creatures. The game delivers fast-paced, responsive combat, and visually impressive pixel art, especially in its boss designs, which include monstrous, meat-infested machinery like tanks and helicopters. The game features nine levels and offers three difficulty modes, allowing players to tailor the challenge to their skills. For those new to the genre, the *Easy Mode* provides 30 lives per level, while *Hard Mode* ramps up the difficulty with more dangerous enemies and fewer lives. *Iron Meat* also supports couch co-op, making it a great game for multiplayer fun. Critics have praised the game for its engaging boss fights, fluid mechanics, and nostalgic appeal, but some noted its brevity. The main campaign can be completed in under 120 minutes, though replayability is extended through unlockable skins and harder difficulty levels. Despite the lack of variety in weapons, the game is still a thrilling and accessible experience for both newcomers and genre veterans. If you enjoy old-school shooters or are a fan of *Contra*, *Iron Meat* is a highly recommended, satisfying homage to the arcade classics of the past. https://youtu.be/wmeRPMNZ4Y8

This game is definitely what I hoped it would be! My faith in Retroware is still on shaky ground, but my faith in this Dev is rock solid. Delivered on both music, game, and display fronts. The ONLY change I'd recommend for the music is to turn it down slightly. At the first notch for audio settings I still had to turn my system audio down. But with that said, I like pretty much everything else about this game so far. Music is great. It's no Doom soundtrack, but it's still great mood music for the action going on. Definitely helps the player feel the hype of the fight. That's not all though, this game ALSO has an entirely separate soundtrack in the form of 8-bit version. I bought the soundtrack happily. Video is good, mobs explode satisfyingly into chunks. But again, that's not all! The video ALSO has a really good scan-line CRT effect. My personal preference in a game this clear is to play without it, but I did mess with the CRT effect and it's really good. It has scan-lines and a very mild hint of ghosting that you'd see on an old CRT. Again though, personal preference, I enjoy the sharp and clear effect off. When I have time to put my attention solely on the game I'd probably play with it. Right now though when my attention is divided I lose track of some of the bullets when I have explosions, bugs, bubbles of doom, and stuff happening that the CRT effect would distract me from. Control wise, the responsiveness is on point. Jumps are good, only missed one. I've had MILD issues with looking sideways when trying to lay down, but that's on the controller and it's just something that happens with a D-Pad. My deaths though have been 90% on me and I can see where the path would be almost every time. The ability to just stand in place and try to shoot has come in clutch multiple times as well. That's a really nice QoL aspect that too many games in this genre ignore for artificial difficulty: "Oh, sure.. you can jump over this hole ONCE while the mob shoots at you, but can you do it 10 times on a screen while screen is full of enemies? Or do you just run and hope a bullet doesn't come from behind?" Gameplay wise, I like the weapon upgrades. Both control wise (able to hold two weapons and swap between them, so if about to die I can swap), and actual upgrades to next stages of the same weapons. I've only been able to upgrade a few though because I'll sometimes switch weapons when I'm in trouble and suddenly pick up Machine Gun 1 instead of upgrading my Machine Gun 2, or I'll grab the gun and IMMEDIATELY have a bug spawn under me that kills me (stupid worms in their stupid holes). But skill issues aside, the guns definitely feel distinct and upgrades have immediate impact. Character speed, jumps, etc, are at a decent speed for the real estate on screen and for the amount of enemies, so you don't feel very slow. There are even unlockable skins and stuff, which are kind of cool. They aren't quite my thing unless the different skins have different abilities, but I like the little phrases with them. "One eye is enough." and "Salesman turned Super Hero!" little slogans. The small touches are good. The bosses are also pretty good, and everything that should be jumped over CAN be jumped over (unlike Prison City where you literally cannot jump over certain things). There are no '100% death' mechanics, it's all fair and based on skills. Playing it on Normal now and look forward to trying it on Hard to see what mechanics change. All in all, yes. I'd recommend. This game rocks. You are NOT going to be buying a 50 hour story driven game. You are basically buying an updated, better designed, Super C. If you are one of the types of people who played Contra hundreds of times or thousands of times, or more? You'll get your money's worth. Though, if you are one of those people that think Contra is worth a quarter and that's it, or any game that isn't a giant multi-story DLC driven game with thousands of character choices and branching paths isn't worth anything more than $5 and take to the forums to whine: well you can just punt yourself RIGHT off the internet. There's a corner somewhere that needs some tears to spruce it up, kindly head over there and fill it.

The Contra formula is really showing it's age, and Iron Meat doesn't attempt to innovate at all - it's a straight up clone doing nothing these games didn't over 30 years ago. In fact, it does less - no perspective switches, vehicle sections or any of that. Just walking forward, shooting, and dying because you didn't learn the pattern yet. You can't slide or climb on walls, and aiming is strictly 8-way digital. But at least it is fun for a single playthrough, because of the quality pixel art, imaginative enemy designs and good music.

Yeah, it's basically high-quality Contra-clone infused with stupendous amount of post-soviet shite posting. I'm not complaining, but bear in mind that this game is exactly 1 hour long.
