Good game. Short and sweet. Lots of little secrets and Easter eggs, and the hunt accentuates the great artwork. Both puzzles and battles hit a sweet spot for me challenge-wise, taking a few tries without getting super frustrating. Playing on a controller, the gameplay was pretty good although switching gun modes and bullet types effectively got confusing. It took me about 3 hrs to complete the story, and I'm no speedrunner.
It is an okay game at best. -The gameplay is really solid, and while difficult at points none of it was absurd enough to make me give up. This is the most important part of this game, and is the only thing really holding it up. -The visuals are pretty nice, along with the enemy design making each foe stand out though the backgrounds/level design could be confusing in terms of what was solid and what wasn't. - The music wasn't bad either. However, the game falls apart in two places, quite majorly. - Far too short really, with wasted potential. This also quite badly affects the second point. - The story and world is absolute trash. The whole game takes place in a self-aware video game reality, with incredibly hamfisted references to various classics such as The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros. It presents this setting, very poorly and immaturely most of the time. It is as if the whole thing was an excuse to shoot the laughing dog from Duck Hunt and have blood spout from his neck, or have Mario riddled with gorey bullet holes. All if this ends somewhat abruptly without a chance to redeem itself. Perhaps the story was not meant to be all that concrete, which is fine, but if that was so then it should not have made such an attempt at focusing on it.
The kind of game you buy on sale. The music has got to be the best thing in this game, as you are fighting bosses and nearing its death, the music becomes super intense and just gets you pumped. Game is very short, beat it within 2 hours, however half of it was dying from the boss fights which are hard af. A few puzzles in the game as well that are straight forward.
