In my complete naivety and arrogance, I went into this game expecting some pretentious artsy "all visuals and no substance" experience that I was going to forget soon after completing it. You can imagine how stupid and naive I felt when I rolled credits, having experienced one of the most unique and wholesome experiences I've ever had in gaming in a long while. Journey, appropriately titled, is all about the journey. It'll clock you a very short 2 and a half hours, but it makes very good use of every minute of those 2 hours with gorgeous visuals, engagingly fun Transversal and an overall incredibly wholesome experience that will leave a mark on you long after the credits roll. But by far my favourite part of this game that made it all so special is the subtle inclusion of multiplayer. You see, this game matches you with another stranger during your gameplay. When I saw mine for the first time, not knowing this game even had a multiplayer feature, I had assumed it was an AI. But no, this was a complete stranger that was also playing this game around the same time I was and had been connected to my session automatically. And because this game has no medium of communication, it essentially forces you to continue moving forward, sharing the journey and experience with another player without ever directly communicating with them. It's this little spin on the gameplay that i think really made journey special to me. It made it special because despite no real method of communication, me and this stranger really formed a bond. Before you think I’m crazy, let me explain. Every time one of us would fall behind, the other would patiently wait until they caught up. We would try to communicate with the little light flashes our characters are able to create. We would always try to be right next to each other as we glided and flied through the skies and onto ledges. Whenever we would lose each other, we would spam pings to help locate each other. We did all of this and so much more without having uttered a single world to each other. It was incredibly wholesome. Eventually, we entered a storm section towards the end of the game. It was a level filled with high winds and fog that filled the space, inhibiting our vision and rendering it incredibly difficult to see off the distance. We eventually got too far from each other, and because the fog completely stopped us from seeing each other, we began to use our little light pings to communicate that we're still alive and where our location was. As the storm got worse, and we got farther, their flashing light slowly began to get harder to see. Slowly fading until eventually disappearing into the distance, and I never saw them again... ): It’s this journey, being experienced with another complete stranger, that I think makes this game so special and so unique of an experience. It's this shared gameplay, mixed with incredible sound design, gorgeous visuals, and fun traversal that I think makes this game a one of a kind. This game might be short, but it's filled to the brim with soul and heart. And because of that, I recommend Journey. 8/10

Actually don't play this if you are mentally unstable, I cried A LOT. Like alot alot. And not even because the game itself is sad but rather because I interpreted alot into what was shown. I don't even think there is one specific plot to get here, you kinda make your own using your own interpretation. Aaaand for me starting with the hill climb it kinda depicted how I imagine suicide to be, with the large white characters depicting Mom(s) looking down upon you, so that led to that reaction. (I'm actually a little embarrassed for this interpretation) On a more neutral note - this was quite the experience. It's beautifully made, doesn't get boring (just maybe a bit tiring where the walk could have been just a little shorter), is short (~90 mins) and kinda explains itself (except for the story as I already touched on). Before the whole crying tirade I was actually really happy; the little flying "birds" felt like they were my friends, boosting each other into the sky. The slides were really fun. The fellow travelers feature was also REALLY cool. Theeeen the jumpscare section with the stupidly loud dragons happened, stealing my scarf (grr) and then the aforementioned hill climb. This was seriously a rollercoaster of emotions. I'd honestly recommend you to experience this little game (buy on sale). Just please be a bit more emotionally stable.

First journey - I didn't know what I was doing, but was headstrong enough to continue pushing through. I met someone and we bonded over the challenges we shared. Second journey - I knew what was about to happen, I knew it was okay - so I took my time. I meditated on the beauty around me, I kept on taking breaks in the middle of nowhere, just to enjoy the scenery and the beauty of the moment. That made my first companion push forward without me, which led to me learning that you could meet different people along your journey, during the different levels - just like in life. Third journey - right before that, I found out what happened when I collect all the symbols and so I was on a mission to do just that. I remember that nothing was more important than the symbols - I collected all of them and that was the worst journey I've ever experienced. I made this experience into a checklist of places I need to visit and shiny things to collect. I didn't care about the companions I crossed paths with and finished lonely, empty, with the biggest scarf I've ever had. Just like in life. Fourth Journey - with my newfound abilities and appearance, I went ahead and experienced the game from a different level. Thing is, I did it alone. I didn't meet anyone on the way. My fourth journey was the first journey I took by myself, all the way through. I found that it was still awesome, but it was better when I had a companion. Fifth Journey - I put on my previous clothing and went out, searching for companions. I found one, but his playing style was different than mine. I tried, but ultimately I learnt that I can't be needy to avoid being alone, if that means being in bad company. Just like in life. Sixth journey - I was with my regular clothing, I decided to go in to just meditate. Then a new player found me and was mesmerized by the embroidery on my robe. We started chipring. I showed him what I know, all the glyphs, symbols, creatures etc etc, I experienced the game again, from his eyes. It was awesome! I kept on doing that for the next 2-3 journeys. 9th journey - I got in with my fancy clothing. I went in there with the idea of just, finding beautiful spots in each level, where I could meditate. I went climbing where I never thought I could climb. I found views I never thought existed. I was alone, but was not lonely. I had an incredible time, from the time I entered, to the last level. I kept on doing that for the next 2-3 journeys. Now, I go in there to either meditate in the awesome spots I've found, to guide new fresh players on how to get through different levels, or going there with a buddy of mine, who shows me glitches and stuff. I love journey. It's basically the ascension process of a soul, but on a different planet. The soundtrack, the ambience - this might be my favorite game. : )

At 3 am, curiosity led me to try a new game. Initially, it felt slow and uninspiring at first. Then, unexpectedly, another player appeared. I assumed it was an NPC, moving alongside me. But there was something different. This "NPC" wasn't behaving predictably. Puzzled, I wondered if it could be a real player. Yet, I hadn't logged into any account, nor chosen a multiplayer mode. Perplexed, I continued. Unfortunately , in an underground level, we lost contact, making me question if it was just an NPC after all. Emerging from the tunnel, a player greeted me and it surprised me. This time the signs were clear: I was not alone. Overjoyed by seeing each other , we sang for a few seconds together and continued our journey. We journeyed together, sharing the path and its wonders, reaching the end side by side. Having been without friends for years, this unexpected companionship brought a warmth I hadn't felt in a long time. The beautiful scenery of our final journey, experienced with another soul, moved me to tears of joy. After i finished the game i searched online, and confirmed this game is indeed multiplayer, but unlike any other. It's a rare gem, a beautiful blend of solitude and connection, bringing strangers together in an unforgettable way.

I can't review this. I just can't. I could do it with Gris. I could do it with The Pathless. I can't do it with Journey. I cannot review this game as a game, and I don't think I can review it as a piece of art. This is not something to be completed. It is something to be experienced. It is the single most beautiful game I have played so far, not because of the graphics, or the gameplay, but because of the way it made me feel. The pure wonder and childlike happiness as a cloth creature fluttered out of it's cage. The awkward giggly feeling of saying a single word, over and over again. The joy of learning how to help my companion. The sadness of losing them, twice. The loneliness of watching my scarf deplete, not having a friend to help. The elation of seeing a little fuzzy blob appear on the side of my screen, telling me a friend was nearby. The frantic rush as we both called out for each other and trying to find out where we were. The security, knowing a fellow traveler was by my side as my movement slowed. The joy of getting to the end with someone else by my side. You cannot review that, rate that on a scale of one to ten. It's called Journey, and man, does it live up to it's name. Play it.
