At the last section of the game, I was walking with a stranger I came across there. Suddenly the wind swept me and I fell down from a bridge. I didn't die or anything but I started from the beginning of that section. Without hesitation, my companion jumped down with me. He could've continued his journey but he chose to finish it with me. I'll never forget that.

I played this game a few months ago and never got around to writing a review, but I feel I have to share my experience. Journey is truly something special. I began with no idea what was happening — just a lone figure following random sculptures through a stunning yet desolate landscape. About twenty minutes in, while solving a puzzle, a stranger suddenly sauntered past me on their seemingly their own mission. I initially assumed they were an NPC, but soon realized they weren’t. We communicated only through a melodic chime, which also served as a tool for interacting with the world. As we each worked to repair a great ribbon bridge, I found myself oddly attached to this silent companion. I had no idea prior to playing that this game was even a coop. Later, as we reached a slope, they sat down and vanished. I felt genuine sadness at their disappearance — surprising for a stranger I’d never spoken to. But when I reached the bottom, surrounded by light, music, and soaring creatures, they returned — racing toward me with joyful chimes. It was an incredible reunion. We continued through breathtaking and perilous environments, solving puzzles and helping each other survive. In one haunting scene, a massive creature struck me down. My companion rushed to my side, chiming in concern as we limped to safety together. As we pressed on, the world grew colder and harsher. Near the end, we were barely moving, clinging to each other for warmth and strength. I truly felt a bond — and sorrow knowing our time was nearly over. Then, just as all seemed lost, we suddenly took flight, soaring high above the clouds, surrounded by light and life. We finished our journey together — and I never even learned their name. I’ll never forget that connection, or the beauty of this experience. Play Journey when you have no distractions, in a dark room with headphones. Let it take you somewhere unforgettable.

In my complete naivety and arrogance, I went into this game expecting some pretentious artsy "all visuals and no substance" experience that I was going to forget soon after completing it. You can imagine how stupid and naive I felt when I rolled credits, having experienced one of the most unique and wholesome experiences I've ever had in gaming in a long while. Journey, appropriately titled, is all about the journey. It'll clock you a very short 2 and a half hours, but it makes very good use of every minute of those 2 hours with gorgeous visuals, engagingly fun Transversal and an overall incredibly wholesome experience that will leave a mark on you long after the credits roll. But by far my favourite part of this game that made it all so special is the subtle inclusion of multiplayer. You see, this game matches you with another stranger during your gameplay. When I saw mine for the first time, not knowing this game even had a multiplayer feature, I had assumed it was an AI. But no, this was a complete stranger that was also playing this game around the same time I was and had been connected to my session automatically. And because this game has no medium of communication, it essentially forces you to continue moving forward, sharing the journey and experience with another player without ever directly communicating with them. It's this little spin on the gameplay that i think really made journey special to me. It made it special because despite no real method of communication, me and this stranger really formed a bond. Before you think I’m crazy, let me explain. Every time one of us would fall behind, the other would patiently wait until they caught up. We would try to communicate with the little light flashes our characters are able to create. We would always try to be right next to each other as we glided and flied through the skies and onto ledges. Whenever we would lose each other, we would spam pings to help locate each other. We did all of this and so much more without having uttered a single world to each other. It was incredibly wholesome. Eventually, we entered a storm section towards the end of the game. It was a level filled with high winds and fog that filled the space, inhibiting our vision and rendering it incredibly difficult to see off the distance. We eventually got too far from each other, and because the fog completely stopped us from seeing each other, we began to use our little light pings to communicate that we're still alive and where our location was. As the storm got worse, and we got farther, their flashing light slowly began to get harder to see. Slowly fading until eventually disappearing into the distance, and I never saw them again... ): It’s this journey, being experienced with another complete stranger, that I think makes this game so special and so unique of an experience. It's this shared gameplay, mixed with incredible sound design, gorgeous visuals, and fun traversal that I think makes this game a one of a kind. This game might be short, but it's filled to the brim with soul and heart. And because of that, I recommend Journey. 8/10

I really enjoy this game. It's beautiful and the music does really well in setting the atmosphere in each area. It's short and sweet but easily re-playable. I downloaded this game with the intention of playing it with my friend so that we could journey together. I'd read online that you can try to end up in the same zone at the same time, finicky but possible. However, the game is intended for you to play with a stranger and when I came across a stranger in the first multiplayer area, chirping and jumping around excitedly together, I found the charm in the intention of this game. And we stayed together for the entire journey. My friend and I were in a voice chat together, each with our own travelling companion as we continued on, and it was FUN. I found myself having a wonderful time, barely able to communicate with my travelling companion outside of our musical chirps but we still felt incredibly connected. If one of us fell, the other would wait or come back to collect them, when we succeeded on a puzzle we would both chirp together happily, and when the game got a little tense or the journey felt tough - the chirps from my companion felt like they were spurring me on. This is a beautiful game where you feel inexplicably connected to someone you may never meet or hear from again. Yet you two always have that journey you shared together. It is also wonderful in the way that you can take the journey at your own pace. You can explore to your hearts content and wander through the desert and if the stranger paired with you instead wants to go off on their own, they can. You will find someone else eventually who may want to explore or travel just as fast as you. They may stop to take a break and then you'll meet someone else again further along. The sentiment of it being your journey while being easier/more enjoyable with others (through the charging of your scarf) is really well done imo. Highly recommend this game and I think I'll come back to it from time to time.

Actually don't play this if you are mentally unstable, I cried A LOT. Like alot alot. And not even because the game itself is sad but rather because I interpreted alot into what was shown. I don't even think there is one specific plot to get here, you kinda make your own using your own interpretation. Aaaand for me starting with the hill climb it kinda depicted how I imagine suicide to be, with the large white characters depicting Mom(s) looking down upon you, so that led to that reaction. (I'm actually a little embarrassed for this interpretation) On a more neutral note - this was quite the experience. It's beautifully made, doesn't get boring (just maybe a bit tiring where the walk could have been just a little shorter), is short (~90 mins) and kinda explains itself (except for the story as I already touched on). Before the whole crying tirade I was actually really happy; the little flying "birds" felt like they were my friends, boosting each other into the sky. The slides were really fun. The fellow travelers feature was also REALLY cool. Theeeen the jumpscare section with the stupidly loud dragons happened, stealing my scarf (grr) and then the aforementioned hill climb. This was seriously a rollercoaster of emotions. I'd honestly recommend you to experience this little game (buy on sale). Just please be a bit more emotionally stable.
