June 2025
Kaku Ancient Seal is a decent game that has some areas that are rough around the edges. I tend to enjoy games with this art style, as it has that Nintendo feel to it that I grew up enjoying. There is a lot in this game that you can tell was inspired by Breath of the Wild, but it keeps you on a bit more of a focused path and outlines what needs to be done to progress the main story. As you can probably expect, the story isn't much of a draw here. It's alright, and it seems like it's very geared toward children or all ages at least. Nothing wrong with that! I don't thing the devs intended to make the next TLOU out of this. The main draw, in my opinion, are the four environments that you explore trying to get the elemental souls to unlock the final boss. They're actually pretty good! The art direction is cool, and I felt the fire area was especially well done. Each area has it's on set of problems you have to solve to discover the temple and beat that area's boss. The game really holds itself back both in combat and mechanically. Though the combat isn't horrible, it's not very responsive as an action game should be. As an example, when you take damage, you flinch. This isn't that big of a deal, but it locks you out of performing any other action for longer than it should. There are poise mechanics in games like dark souls, but it's way worse here. If you're standing in fire or something on the ground, you simply flinch/stagger yourself to death due to not being able to walk, roll, dodge, move, etc for that entire period. It's silly to say the least. Flinching also clears out inputs. What I mean by this is if I am walking forward and I take damage, I will flinch. If I am still holding the control to move forward, the game will no longer register the input. I have to let go of the control and press the control again to be able to continue movement. This is the same for every action in the game. It may sound inconsequential, but in an action game where seconds count, this made me take more damage than actual mechanics. Add the fact that you need to use modifiers to select sling ammo, ultimates, and on use items, and it's even more annoying because those get cancelled too. It's just not intuitive. There's not a ton of enemy variety, but the bosses are all unique and pretty cool. They're WAY too spongey in my opinion. You need to be constantly using the on-use damage buff if you want to force health pools down. It's not always fun, but the fights were decent. Regardless, this is a decent game for a 20 hour playthrough. I would give it a 6/10. Anyone who likes the art style and some ok exploration will enjoy this for a bit. The sale prices are pretty good and make it worth a buy if you need something alright to play.

This is a surprisingly big game. It's also a surprisingly hard game (mainly from a platforming-perspective rather than the combat, but any fight where you can get knocked off the side of the arena is nigh-on impossible due to the outrageous knock-back range. Obviously lowering the difficulty doesn't change this). It's the kind of game I might have 100%'d, but finding all pieces of the blank stele is going to be way too tedious and the later challenges you do to boost your health or stamina (the ones needing 3 rune stones to unlock) are way too hard for me. There is a lot of fun to be had here, so overall it is a recommend, but brace yourself...

This game is not perfect. It has a few minor bugs, but also some major ones. I experienced one of the latter. A whole area stoped working, the devs could not help me. Nevertheless I enjoyed playing the game a lot, so I want to recommend it.

Cool game overall that can be a nice palate cleanser to everything else that's out there. Combat is not quite balanced as well as it should be, boss battles can be arduous with annoying move patterns that need to be memorized. The steps to properly defeat certain bosses are not always evident and can require guess-and-check methods. There are a ton of dungeons requiring puzzle solving and maze racing to help Kaku level up, this can be fun for awhile but sometimes feel like a repetitive chore. Negatives aside, the controls feel good, music has a nice fit, and the story/animations are done well. All things considered, the game really succeeds at making you feel like you're on an adventure and is a great add to the collection. Go for it.
