It takes a lot of guts for a rhythm game to [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oY_zQJ22rHU]readily admit that most, if not all of its charts need a serious do-over, then actually act on it; all the moreso when that generally decreases the difficulty ceiling in a genre where many players hold a misguided "high difficulty = quality" mindset. Kalpa: Cosmic Symphony has done just that with its charts following its EA graduation, and even adds an Insane BMS-style "Astra" mode to supplement its standard charts becoming easier overall. At its base $20 price point and immediate launch, Kalpa CS offers 132 (un-keysounded) songs in both 4 and 5K modes. Not a bad price proposition compared to the game's pricier (even considering sales) contemporaries on Steam! And although 31 originals are initially locked, they are simply obtained as you read through a 7-8 hour VN Story mode or skip through it. Story songs unlock with full difficulty access regardless of your skill level after clearing them, so unlocking everything didn't feel blatantly obstructive even after reading all of the story. Many of Kalpa CS 2.0's standard charts take after EZ2ON's sustained charting philosophy with some Respect V bursting sprinkled in. If you're able to Standard mode S+ EZ2ON's 16-17s and/or 99% + MC Respect V SC 9-11s consistantly, you'll find many of KALPA CS's 16-18s to be on the easier side compared to EZ2ON's offerings, even considering KALPA CS's ±50ms (optionally ±25ms via Lunatic mode) perfect timing window. ★1-3 Astras are more than clearable if you're able to unlock access to each tier to begin with. My main complaint I have with Astras is the constant need to flip back to Astra mode every so often to unload AP; there really isn't a reason to cap it to 10k with how quickly AP accumulates on top of each ★4 Astra costing 5k AP to buy... Although this isn't a major issue with the base songlist, some of the DLCs' Astra spreads are also decidedly lacking in song distribution, which has led to things like Lanota's Astaroth completely shaking off its boss song reputation from EA and its home game. This has been slowly addressed with post-release updates; QueseraGames' will to improve the game at this initial pace is admirable, if nothing else. Overall, Kalpa CS's musicality sticks close to J-core (a large majority being licenses), broken up with violin + piano pieces mainly from Scarlette and Ice. Revival of Kalpa and Avataar stand out among Kalpa's originals, though that isn't to say the other originals don't match up to them; I was pleasantly surprised by Happily Ever After combined with its story context and presentation despite the song's easier charts. Speaking of story mode, while the story does a decent job of characterizing its cast, only 4 of the mobile Kalpa's Guardians are remotely relevant to it (even then, Sylvia hardly resembles her mobile self). This isn't a bad thing in of itself, as it ensures the story isn't stretched thin on trying to worldbuild and flesh out a cast that's too big for the story's short runtime. However, the English story script is hampered by typos, speaker tags bugging out, and a passable at best, stilted at worst translation. It certainly has moments that shine through in spite of all these issues, but it's still all too jarring to get whiplashed by a very literally translated line in-between lines that read just fine. Kalpa CS isn't the worst way to burn $20 if you're looking for a no-frills 4/5K experience, though I would recommend grabbing it on sale. Although the game still has a few nitpicks such as not allowing rebinding speed up/down from the 1/2 number keys, the story's poor EN script, and the low AP storage cap, it nevertheless presents more than enough care to continue improving upon itself and make its gameplay experience smooth, customizable, and allowing easily replayable practice through certain chart sections you might be struggling with. This care alone lets Kalpa CS stand out in the ever-saturating market of Steam's VSRGs.

This game was good but the 2.0 update made it fantastic. [*]The concept of boss fights in a VSRG is something I really love, similar to games like SOUND VOLTEX. You cannot go wrong with a boss fight chart. [*]All story charts have really cool cinematics, whether they are boss fights, background videos, gameplay effects, or other stuff to keep it interesting. I hope more charts continue to get these cinematics! [*]All charts have been reworked, and the pointlessly difficult charts are now in a separate section without affecting your rating. I think this is good because it makes them optional for those who are just wanting a gimmick or a challenge, and it keeps the base songs clean and tidy. [*]There is something for everyone. Not only is there 4K and 5K, but there is also free choice between a 3D Guitar Hero-style track and the 2D top-down track we all know and love. Just giving the freedom of choice makes it a great play for anyone of any play style. [*]They just keep on giving. The original songs are all genuinely so good, and if they continue pushing out new updates at this speed, I don't see why any VSRG fan would skip this game. The story is whatever, but it's fully optional, and I'm just here for the gameplay. If you like VSRGs, don't skip! Give it a shot.

KALPA: Cosmic Symphony has one of the best soundtracks I’ve heard in a rhythm game—right up there with MUSYNX. Every track is fast-paced, catchy, and incredibly well-produced. If you're here for the music, you're in for a treat. The charts are solid across the board, offering a good mix of difficulty levels. The Chaos difficulty in particular is where the game really shines, giving hardcore players something to sink their teeth into. I also really like the option to switch between flat and 3D lanes, and the support for both 4-key and 6-key modes gives players plenty of flexibility. I personally didn’t buy the game for the story—I mainly stick to Free Play mode—and I was impressed by how many songs are available there right out of the box. A couple of things I hope the developers improve: More backgrounds and themes. The space theme is okay, but it gets a bit stale, especially if you’re coming from other rhythm games that offer more visual variety. All in all, it’s a solid rhythm game, especially for the price. If you’re craving more rhythm games on Steam, this one’s worth checking out. Plus, the devs regularly update it with new songs and content, which is always a good sign.
