I dont honestly understand why i keep buying senran games, i really dont. i guess because theirs not a lot of good games on the market these days, but ill say straight out and with confidence this is my personal favorite one so far. it follows the standard senran style story mode, multiple "factions" to choose from to progress the story, each with their own personal style jet ski. lots of character customization as always, you can dress your character in a bikini and such or give them a full schoolgirl outfit. jetskis have custom colors and liveries you can purchase as you progress, speed upgrades. theirs minigames you can play outside of the jet racing, such as treadmill running and mopping floors. the racing isnt really terrible but i dont understand the drifting part. sometimes it just boosts me and i 360 into a wall. aside from that, and some of the tricks not functioning properly off the start unless you work on remapping them theirs not really that many issues and its a decent game, and fairly unique as idk offhand many other jetski racers with character and jetski customization to this degree. the tricks though arent really important because you can do atleast one that i have figured out so far which is right stick left, they all do the same thing, it just misses out on other trick animations. if you play tutorial also it will scuff you out because of this unless you manage to do it on MNK which i dont know what buttons they were telling me to press on the keyboard to do it, but you can pause the game in tutorial and move onto the next stage or tutorial, so you dont get hard stuck or rage quit trying to get it to somehow work, as the game wants you to do multiple tricks in order to progress the tutorial.

Kandagawa Jet Girls, developed by SHADE Inc. and published on Steam by XSEED Games, Marvelous USA, Inc., and Marvelous, is an exuberant and unapologetically stylized hybrid of arcade racing, character-focused storytelling, and anime-inspired spectacle. Built as a companion to its animated series, the game wastes no time establishing its tone: bright, youthful energy, lighthearted rivalry, and a relentless celebration of motion. The premise revolves around jet machine racing—an evolving sport in a futuristic Tokyo where two-person teams compete along the Kandagawa River and other iconic waterways. One character pilots the jet machine, while the other serves as a shooter, creating a partnership dynamic that allows the game to weave friendship, teamwork, and personal ambition into its breezy narrative framework. The story mode follows several duos, each with its own comedic quirks, insecurities, and motivations, and while the writing avoids heavy emotional arcs, its sincerity and cheerful softness make progression feel like flipping through episodes of a sports anime. The gameplay blends traditional boost-based arcade racing with light third-person shooter mechanics, resulting in matches that feel energetic and chaotic rather than technical or simulation-driven. Piloting emphasizes drifting, slipstreaming, timed boosts, and environmental awareness, while shooting relies on limited ammunition, aiming discipline, and quick evaluation of threats. The duality is the game’s defining feature, inviting players to decide whether to play aggressively, defensively, or strategically based on race position and track layout. Courses are filled with obstacles, alternate routes, ramps, and water currents that subtly influence momentum, ensuring that races rarely unfold the same way twice. Controls are approachable and forgiving, favoring spectacle over precision, making the game accessible to players unfamiliar with racing titles. The balance leans toward fast fun rather than deep mastery, which can be refreshing or limiting depending on expectations. Visually, Kandagawa Jet Girls exudes style. The neon-glowing waterways, sleek futuristic architecture, reflections shimmering across water surfaces, and character models that stay impressively true to the anime’s design all contribute to a polished, cheerful atmosphere. The water physics and spray effects—central to a jet-based racing game—are particularly satisfying, helping sell the fantasy of skimming above rushing currents at high speed. The game also embraces the fanservice-heavy heritage of Marvelous properties, including costume variety, playful camera framing, and animations that knowingly flirt with exaggeration. Yet the tone remains more cheeky than explicit, carrying a self-awareness that treats fanservice as part of the sport’s performative entertainment rather than its sole purpose. Sound design complements the visuals: energetic pop tracks, upbeat electronic riffs, and enthusiastic Japanese voice acting give every race a pulse, while UI flourishes mirror televised sports broadcasts, reinforcing its competitive-showmanship identity. Customization is another highlight, giving players freedom to tailor characters and jet machines to personal taste. Costumes, hairstyles, accessories, stickers, color palettes, and mechanical modifications can all be unlocked, turning each team into a reflection of player preference. Jet parts subtly alter handling, acceleration, durability, and weapon performance, introducing a lightweight progression loop that nudges players to experiment without overwhelming them with stat micromanagement. This system pairs well with the game’s personality-driven approach—fans of specific characters can tune machines to complement their narrative traits, while players who enjoy aesthetic collecting will find plenty of incentives to continue racing. Despite its charm, Kandagawa Jet Girls carries structural limitations. The campaign, though generous in length, becomes formulaic over time, repeating cutscene–race–reward cycles with only minor shifts in difficulty or event variety. The AI occasionally struggles with consistency, alternating between passive and unexpectedly aggressive behavior. Online multiplayer, originally intended as a major longevity feature, depends heavily on community activity, and its player base has fluctuated since launch, making matchmaking hit-or-miss. The lack of mechanical evolution also means that seasoned racing fans may find the skill ceiling shallow, and those uninterested in its anime presentation or light fanservice may struggle to connect with the experience. Yet the game’s greatest strength is the clarity of its identity. Kandagawa Jet Girls is not trying to compete with simulation racers, esports-focused arcade titles, or narratively heavy visual novels. It exists for fans of energetic Japanese pop media, cooperative duos, stylish character interactions, and racing that prioritizes momentum, color, and personality over technical rigor. It offers a breezy, upbeat experience—something like an animated summer vacation spent drifting across sunlit rivers, laughing with friends, and treating every victory like a televised celebration. For players who appreciate the anime, enjoy Marvelous’ brand of character-driven entertainment, or simply want a racing game that feels different from anything else on the market, it provides a memorable and delightfully specific ride. Kandagawa Jet Girls may not convert skeptics or appeal universally, but for its intended audience, it succeeds with enthusiasm, charm, and confidence. It transforms competitive sport into joyful spectacle, embraces teamwork as both theme and mechanic, and delivers a world so vibrant that even the quiet moments feel animated. In a gaming landscape filled with realism and grit, its buoyant optimism stands out—proof that there is room for games that exist simply to be fun, flashy, and unabashedly themselves. Rating: 8/10

Came for the girls, stayed for the fun gameplay... I found out about this game through the anime (yes, for those not in the know, this was developed alongside an anime of the same name) and never expected to enjoy the game as much as I did. Although, to preface, I will say that I am rather easy to please. Anyway... The story is not really complex. It's comprised of six + one separate story arcs; six for the six pairs of girls from the anime, as well as one game-original pair. It follows the girls' daily lives and struggles and passion for the sport of Jet Racing (except the 1st one, the Asa-girls Arc, which is basically a soft retelling of the anime) in a fun and rather light-hearted way, presented in a visual novel-style format. It has no crazy depth or character moments - like I said, mostly light-hearted fun, with some occasional "yuri-ous" moments sprinkled here and there... The gameplay itself is rather unique, I would say - even within the racing game genre. As a player, you're in control of a futuristic jet ski and a pair of characters; a jetter and a shooter, whom you can alternate between. As the jetter, you're in full control of your jet ski and as the shooter, your job is to break obstacles scattered on the course, or blast and slow down your opponents (either AI-controlled or other players in online mode). The core gameplay loop and the jet ski controls - when to steer, brake, drift etc. - are easy to learn, but can be a challenge to fully master and utilize to their fullest. That said, once you figure things out, the gameplay becomes a breeze - that is to say, really easy, sometimes too easy. I had to handicap myself by not upgrading the machines (more about that later) during story mode. Each pair of girls has their own jet ski, which all have their own unique attributes and stats, making all feel a bit different while playing. Outside of the storymode, the game has also has a free race and time attack modes, as well as online mode and 3 different minigames, which - while not difficult - offer a nice little break from racing. The game has a total of 8 different courses with 2 different times of the day and a total of 3 different routes. All have their own features and obstacles, offering varying levels of difficulty; some have a lot of corners, some have long straights, some have ramps and so on... All courses have nice, unique scenery and their own little challenges. The game also has full character customization - from skin and eye color to hair, clothes, or accessories, to which you can unlock items by either completing special challenges during races, or buying with points rewarded by races and minigames. The best part about the customization is that once you unlock an item, you can use it on everyone. On the downside though, nearly all items have reskins, which must be bought separately. Race points are also used to buy upgrades for the jet skis, improving their stats and in-game behavior. I should note that the upgrade prices skyrocket fast and require some amount of grind. There's also a handful of decals and skins for the machines that do nothing but alter their appearance. The BGM and music isn't anything groundbreaking, but it fits the tone of the game. Story moments usually have lighter music and races heavier or more intense tracks - of course, the music also depends on what's happening on the screen or what course is being played, as each have their own tracks. I will say, however, that at least for me, a couple of the tracks have become quite the earworms... All in all, the game is a unique and fun spin on the jet ski/wave racing genre, presented in a cute anime-style. What it boils down to is basically "cute girls doing cute things - jet ski racing edition." It certainly won't be for everyone, as it is a very niche product, and that's ok. I personally really enjoyed and continue to enjoy the hell out of it even despite all its shortcomings and flaws and I really hope this wasn't a one-and-done type of thing, and we'd get to see more with this IP someday... 9/10, would recommend; plus if you liked the game, I recommend checking out the anime if you haven't done that already...
