Glad I found this series. It looks like an N64 game and plays kind of like a Crash and Croc hybrid. Short game, but some of the later levels get lengthy and the precision jumps will make you want to tear your hair out. 7.5/10

Kao the Kangaroo (2000) is a product of its time. Expect some jank and stiff controls. I ended up creating a custom Steam Deck configuration to get it feeling better (Find it in the community presets!). Gameplay has its share of frustrations: hitboxes can be wonky, platforming is occasionally clunky, and boss strategies aren't always clear. The life system is also unforgiving – losing all lives means starting the entire game from scratch. Kao has a certain old-school charm justifying playing it and I expect some nostalgia for returning players (It's my first time playing it), but if you're looking for a smooth, modern platforming experience, you're better off exploring newer titles in the genre.

Fairness This is a platformer game that, for once, actually feels fair. I honestly feel like most platformers I play make me angry at how hard the game is, not because the gameplay itself is difficult, but because the controls are ridiculous, or because the physics don't work in a reasonable way, or just whatever, but this is a game where the controls and everything actually felt good for once, and if I died I thought, "That was on me, I messed up here" rather than "This stupid game is just so stupid, why couldn't they just make it right? " and so the game feeling basically fair is a huge plus in my book, and it's the main reason I strongly recommend this. More than that, the game actually gives you the tools you need to play it properly, and are there times where you need to position yourself very precisely to make a certain jump? Yes. That's why the game has buttons available to edge your character ever so slightly left or right, because they knew you would need it at some point and so made it available for you rather than what I feel most games would do and just not let have it so you can fumble about with less precise controls and die because of it. But just in general, everything you need to complete the game properly is there and it never leaves you hanging, and I honestly feel you could use this game as a lesson in proper game design because it's platforming done well for once. That being said, there was on particular boss fight against who I think was supposed to be the Greek god Zeus that was just absolutely nonsensical in how you win it, and I don't know how anyone was expected to beat that without a guide (and it barely feels possible with one for that matter), and a couple of the minor enemies I still have no idea how you're supposed to get passed them without being hit and I just accepted it was an automatic loss of HP, and occasionally the hitboxes in general were a bit weird, but I feel all of these things were unintentional on the part of the developers, and I can't think of a single unfair thing that it felt like they did on purpose. Difficulty Curve No, there isn't a difficulty curve. Rather, there's a difficulty zigzag, because the game is all over the place, and the final boss is not even remotely the hardest one, the second boss was 50 times easier than all the others, I was on level 2 wondering why it felt like I was already at the end of the game due to the difficulty, and just in general there is no corrolation between how far into the game anything appears and the difficulty of said thing. That being said, this is ultimately a kids' game, so even the hardest sections (apart from the one ridiculous boss. Seriously, what were they thinking?) weren't that hard, and so everything being a bit unevenly distributed wasn't that huge of a deal in the end.

a simple platformer, the port itself is not very good, but it's still fun to play.
