- 75/100 - Kind of basic, even for the year it originally came out, but still fun, nostalgic graphics and straight to the point story. The Y-axis for controller is inverted and can't be changed, but I got used to it faster (except in water levels).

"Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2 (2003 re-release)" is an ancient game from 2003. It's a whopping 22 years old at the time of this review, however has been modernized to support 4K graphics and customisable controls. Originally made for the GameCube, this PC port does have some problems, but significantly fewer than I normally see with games this old. The worst part about this is, there's no mouse input, despite this being sold on PC as if it were a PC game. That's something the developers should fix. However, the game is playable, well optimised, and while it looks a bit dated, the cartoony stylisation has helped it age better. The third person platforming gameplay is serviceable enough, you've got edge grabbing and double jumps (somewhat new features for platformers back in 2003), and some different kinds of game activities. One significant issue from a zoology perspective, kangaroos cannot run!!! They hop. Their legs aren't evolved to move independently from each other. Still, the developer is Polish and probably only ever saw pictures of kangaroos. Anyway while there's some defects here and this isn't a perfect game, there's a lot of content. The game only costs $2 at full price! Value for money is a huge deciding factor when considering if a game is worth buying or not. Getting a few hours of gameplay in a not-unreasonable platformer for $2 is okay. It's significantly better to play than much more recent Sonic the Hedgehog console ports. For $2 considering how much you get, and because the developer has proven to display outstanding ethics (donating proceeds to charity in the past), this is something gamers absolutely should consider if they like third person platformers.

A nostalgic platformer that was clearly made by a small team but is a vast improvement over the absurdly difficult original game. 'Kao the Kangaroo: Round Two' is heavily influenced by the surge of mascot platformers that were around at the time such as Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon. You can complete this game within 3-5 hours, the graphics still look great and the controls feel nice (I played using a PS4 controller with no issues). My only issue was with the dialogue moments as there would always be an awkwardly long pause between each line, but it's a minor issue. If you were like me and remember playing this game on PS2 back in the day, then definitely pick this one up. Side note: I don't like the way they pronounce KAO's name in this! It should be "Kay-oh" like K.O. but they all pronounce it as "cow"

Amazing game for $2! The plot is a little confusing, but this game reminds me of Crash and Spyro on the PS2 and a little of Mario 64 with the hub world. 5/5 rating for the price!

The game definitely has a certain charm to it. The skyboxes look really nice sometimes, the Spyro--esque level desighn is nice, the presentation is overall there. There are moments where the environments really shine through, like the snowboarding level. That level has a decent sounding dnb track playing (sucks that the controls kinda blow cock and that touching any wall or anything in general will damage you), which is kinda the problem with Kao 2. Moments of genuinely cool or cozy things in a game that certainly shows its age. The biggest sin Kao 2 commits is the hitboxes and the poorly timed dialogue (save for the fucking final boss). What I mean by this is that with some enemies or some platforms, Kao gets hit from 5 feet away or slips and falls like some bumbling bafoon off platforms. This all leads to the biggest pile of shit in this game, the final boss (this is in context of doing the no hit achievement) but the first phase of the fight is complete bullshit as there are some projectiles that just become invisible if you go into certain areas of the arena, some hitboxes extend beyond what you would believe as the projectiles will hit you even if you are a few character lengths away. I still give it a recommend due to there still being some good environments and charm. It delivers what it says on the box, a nice romp through a sorta memory-holed platformer. Do not attempt the no hit achievements, I got very angry.
