Getting sick of seeing garlic already? Explored enough dungeons and slayed through all kinds of fantasy monsters? Don't worry, this game will give you the chance to feel like a badass once in a lifetime. You stand in a supermarket, you did nothing wrong and all of a sudden, people want to beat the living kung fu out of you. The benefits of this game are clear as day: you feel like a badass, you don't lose your real teeth and in real life, you don't get your bones broken or nobody is throwing a frying pan or a knife at you. Hopefully! Instead, in this game, you learn lots of cool moves, get to decide your own combo chain and get to use a lot of items to get through the hordes of angry gangsters and angry karens. In real life, you would get probably arrested, get maybe beat up or land as the laughing stock of the newest chinese video sharing social network platform. Here, the only real price you pay is 5 bucks and you get lots of fun, while you still need to keep your focus on the gameplay. Are you yin yang enough to master this cool game?
Picked this up during the Summer Sale for €1.69 and honestly didn't expect much. A few runs later I was completely hooked. The combat feels great, putting builds together is a lot of fun, and every good run made me want to start another one. Now I finally understand why so many people recommended it.
After the huge success of Vampire Survivors the "bullet heaven" genre sprung up overnight, with hundreds of clones that mostly repeat what poncle's game did. It's rare that an imitator tries to do something different, and this is the case with Karate Survivor , that forgoes the bullets (mostly) and tries to become a playable version of Jackie Chan's comedic martial arts movies, with a lone man using the common items and furniture around him as weapons, against hordes of nameless bad guys. For the most part it succeeds. Pros: + The more moves you unlock, the more the character will interact with whatever is around him at any moment, e.g. sliding under bars, slamming mobs with doors, running along walls etc. for a good imitation of those above mentioned martial arts films. + More strategic gameplay: you have to consider the direction, angle and radius of the move instead of blindly attacking while going around, in order to hit as many enemies at once as you can. + Interesting combo system where you have to chain together different moves of the same "martial arts school" and put them in the "right" order to maximize their power and effects. It gives the impression of being a fighting game even if it isn't really one. + Very nice and well-animated pixelated graphics style in-game, plus painterly/movie poster style in the menus, that sell the 1980s-90s vibe even more. And so does a good synth soundtrack that is very catchy. Cons: - There's too little content. Only one playable character, five stages, 3 kinds of tasks and about 15 types of enemies that however aren't too different from one another. - Lame bosses. They're just slightly bigger people with longer health bars, and the most dangerous element of the fights are the enemy mobs around them. - Endless mode is kinda useless, uninteresting and doesn't unlock anything. - Not all unlockable moves are equally as useful, some don't really offer any advantage.
Really fun game. Between the 5 levels and the 3 difficulty modes, it has just enough difficulty, grind, and feeling of progression to keep me idly occupied. I like that executing the actual attacks is periodic, automated, and that I just take care of the movement. Less load for me, and more focus on my positioning. The difficulty modes also change how you get damaged. At the easiest, you only get damaged when you touch enemies. At middle difficulty, you get damaged by the actual attacks, and at hard, if you attack into their attacks, you also get some damage. Overall, a nice progression, with the lowest difficulty feeling appropriately very easy. The upgrade paths are very satisfying. The different moves are very fun, but things like regeneration and attack range also influence things a lot. I prefer to go all red moves, and massively increase attack range, so I just get huge, circular attacks to manage the hordes of enemies. The game is not a bullet hell (which I personally dislike). The vast majority of enemies are melee (and you get options to deal with the rare ranged enemies, such as redirecting thrown knives), so the main element of the game is careful positioning, and manipulating the shape of the enemy horde. In conclusion, this is an amazingly fun game which, although a bit grindy, felt both satisfying and relaxing.
