"Kind Words" isn't a game so much, as its an messaging app designed to encourage niceness. And it works well. You can request messages by making a post (something like "I am down because my gf broke up with me") or you can browse current requests and respond to them. Posts are limited to 7 lines and replies to 14. Its all anonymous and you can only ever send one message. The setup makes it impossible to form relationships or really get to know other users, but it does do a great job of fostering a community of strangers. Also whatever they have working behind the scenes keeps spam and/or mean posts out. The "game" part is collecting stickers that decorate your room. You start with one and can send them with any reply you write and also give them as thanks for replies. Over time you collect quite a few. Also, while initially you have very few songs unlocked, you unlock an additional one for every day you write something. Your little avatar will sit in a cute and cozy little room writing messages and listening to music. Like I said, its not really a game, but its still executes its premise well. All the little restrictions plus whatever they do on the backend, have kept my experience at least, very, very pleasant. I never saw any bad responses and I've never had any problems getting wrongfully flagged or something. The music selection is a bit limited, especially at the start, but that gets better with time. Plus, you are not supposed to play this hours a day, more like half an hour every day. End result is that its a fun and wholesome thing to do on the regular. There is a nice solidarity in knowing people are struggling with similar things and its nice to get positive messages about. If you are down about anything, or even just want to get out of your head a bit, get "Kind Words"

Full disclaimer - this game is not a substitute for therapy. If you're really struggling with life, seek professional help and not strangers on the internet. As nice as it is to receive words of affirmation anonymously, they can be just as harmful when you're at your weakest and most vulnerable. With that out of the way - I've been 'playing' this on and off for a few years now, and while my time with it is never long, I for the most part come out of it feeling better as a result of sharing some kindness with others. The chill-hop music is superb, and the core mechanic of writing anonymous requests or responding to them is so heart-warming, that it's truly amazing that a game like this exists. You can instil profound moments on others or random acts of kindness that'll carry them through hardships, because we all do at some point in our lives. Reading through other's woes and helping where possible, will not only fill your own bucket up but give you an opportunity to practice gratitude. This is the genuine article. But be mindful, because even if you're only responding to requests, there's such a thing as carer fatigue. I've personally found that spending too much time in one session can drain your tank. Luckily whether for the better or worse, how much you can respond with is limited in character count, and 'conversations' are limited to a single response with no ability to reply beyond that. While it's not for everyone of course, you're either the one reaching out into the void of the internet to hear something positive back, or you're someone that's experienced life and just want to help others along their journey. In either case, it speaks volume to those involved.

I've played many games, but none have touched my heart the way Kind Words has. This game came into my life when I was at my lowest, struggling with feelings I couldn't explain, and desperately seeking a safe space. This game became that space for me—a place where I could pour my thoughts into letters, knowing that on the other side, someone, somewhere, was willing to listen without any judgement. This game offers a lifeline of connection in a world that can feel isolating. It’s more than just writing letters; it’s about finding comfort in the kindness of strangers. I am an Introvert, I was hesitant about whether I should send requests/write letters to strangers but every response I received was a reminder that I wasn’t alone, and those simple, thoughtful words became my anchor in dark times. The peaceful music and gentle aesthetic made me feel like I was in a safe cocoon, protected from the weight of the outside world. Without Kind Words, I’m not sure I would’ve made it through some of the hardest moments of my life or this past few weeks. It’s a reminder of the goodness that still exists in people, even when everything feels overwhelming. If you’re struggling or feel like no one is listening, this game can be the hand that reaches out when you need it the most. It certainly was for me. Thank you, Kind Words. You saved my life.

This game can unfortunately feel like crisis hotline simulator 2019 when that's not what it's meant to be. I wish there was a way to post a review that was neither positive nor negative, just informational. I'm going to make the review positive partly because I'd feel like a heartless monster if I wrote a negative review. The game has a cutesy aesthetic, but can often be quite distressing. Being exposed to constant hopelessness can wear away at you, and if you're suicidal and are an imminent danger to yourself, I can't in good conscience recommend this game. I doubt anyone will read this review so I guess it doesn't matter and helps no-one, but I just think in a way it's sort of irresponsible to have game like this? I'm not sure how to word it. I've had a largely positive experience with the game, maybe even overwhelmingly positive. I have never had anyone say anything that was unhelpful, upsetting, or not empathetic, but I still think being exposed to the constant negativity this game can have due to people using it as a support system could just push people over the edge. I'm torn on how I feel about this, I think it's a lovely idea, but warm and fuzzy feelings are also mixed in with borderline suicide notes that can make you feel even worse. It reminds me of the mental health forums I used to frequent. Everyone was suffering but in a way it was comforting because we were all suffering together. I wish I could just say something simple like "see a therapist" but obviously there's issues with dismissing people with stuff like that. So yeah, I don't even know what to say about this. If you feel like you have a volatile mental state, it might be best to avoid this game, it's one of the few games I feel could potentially be very damaging to someone's mental health unexpectedly. It's not just "triggering" per se, some people (me, evidently) find it hard not to carry this sort of us with us all the time. So you can't just switch it off and forget all the people that you somehow formed a connection with through just a few words. I know this isn't the game's fault, but I also feel guilty. I've only ever played this game at the lowest points in my life. What if something I said bothered someone the way I was bothered by the message that prompted me to write this review? I'm mostly thinking out loud here. I don't think this is the fault of the game, but it facilitates this. I think it's irresponsible to disregard this. There will always be people that lack connection in other aspects of their life looking to this game to fix that. It's much easier to anonymously confess how you're feeling to people that aren't a part of your life. I couldn't burden those I actually know, and it's not selfish to look for other ways to get things of your chest. That being said, there's so much exposure to negativity, like I've said before, because of using the game in this way. A lot of people won't be equipped to deal with it. tl;dr I don't even know at this point. I'm almost too emotional to articulate my feelings about this game properly, but I just think it has the potential to be harmful to people that aren't doing well mentally, despite being a sweet and heart-warming idea filled with positive sentiment. I want to recommend it so badly but I think it could have the possibility to cause material harm for some people. Unfortunately I think it's most harmful to the type of people most likely to be drawn to this sort of thing. I don't think it's just my fault I feel like this, I don't think the game caused this either, I just don't think it's the sort of game a lot of people should be playing. I don't seek the deny the positive experiences people have had with this, and I'll probably keep playing it anyway so maybe me vocalising my issues with it is pointless. I'll update this review later when I'm composed, or maybe not.
