I miss this game, when I started playing kingdoms years ago it was still very much in early development. Since then it has been updated, and now lost to time, I truly hope the developer is okay, and maybe some day we will see this beautiful game finished. Even being unfinished, the quality is great!! You can explore the entire world, the caves and beaches, the other settlements are fun to find and set up routes with. There is still stuff to be improved for the building and development side, so hopefully we can see that ironed in the future.
Ok, so yes there are a lot of negative reviews for this as development stopped about 5 years ago with no signs that it will be resumed. WITH THAT SAID, for 10USD current price on steam i think the game is still worth buying and playing. While it does not have many in depth systems almost all mechanics do function more or less as intended, albeit basic iterations that they are according to the road map. But it's an interesting concept, and quite frankly fills a niche that no one has ever seemed to explore with sandbox games. The game will progress with OR without your involvement or influence. You can either start with a prepopulated island or you can start on an uninhabited island. The later is by far the most interesting. Yes i have 6 hours. I bought this game a little more than 24 hours ago after it somehow came up on my steam store recommendations. Let me reiterate this for the troglodytes who will inevitably come and comment on this blasting me for giving this a positive review; I AM FULLY AWARE THE GAME IS MOST LIKELY ABANDONED! I DON'T CARE! I grew up in the PS1, N64, OG Xbox era and nothing today comes close to any of the games i grew up with. The dev clearly put a lot of time and effort into this game and it shows. In my first and current play through their are approximately 10 or so settlement that I'm aware of, with a few of them at war with the other few. All i did was make a farm, grow some vegetables and start a store front selling what ever i could scrounge and i was able to build some houses and the AI just moved into my little homestead. Freaking Cool! The mechanics are basic, but they work, the perks aren't super deep or in-depth, but they work. You can either reclusively learn perks from AI characters or you can level up perks by performing jobs relevant to those perks. You start in the island coming in on a boat with about 20 or so other AI. They will go their own ways and either seek out civilization or found their own cities or homesteads. There's a lot of games that let you build colonies. There's a lot of games that let you mange cities. There's a lot of games that let you play towards economic or military conquest. There's a few games which let the AI do it's thing in the background of you. I've yet to play a single game that the AI will decide to be William Wallace and march across the continent and conquer another city without the player providing some form of influence or trigger to initiate it. The AI here will say "that's a nice city you have their, yoink" completely and seemingly unprovoked. Each AI has a name, likes dislikes, aspirations, etc. You can (supposedly) marry and have children (haven't tried yet so that'll be an update), you can build a shop in a city and contribute to it's local economy. you can be a traveling merchant and contribute to multiple cities economies. The cities will have their own leaders who can give you various quests. So yes, the game may be abandoned. But in a time when AAA studio's focus on microtransactions and multiplayer only. This game lets you literally build your own story and play however casually or aggressively as you want. Perhaps the dev will come back, perhaps he won't. If the dev does see this, just know there are several posts in your discussion showing interest in taking over the project, and i too might be interested the licensing rights to the project.
