March 2025
It took me almost 40 hours, 24 in the past few months, but I finally FINALLY beat the game with ONE of the 3 available characters ONCE. Wow. This has honestly felt like a journey. Normally when it comes to these kinds of games, the story is very minimal and plays very little to no role whatsoever. But in this game, you are basically Playing an Eastern Europe/Slavic/Russian Folklore roguelike deckbuilder version of Tom Cruise's "The Day After Tomorrow" or whatever the original title was. The more knowledge you and the character you are playing has, the more it will affect their ending once you are able to obtain it. There are very few guides for this game and the very long playtime I have to just beat the game once is because I was being very stubborn and didn't look up any information on the puzzles because I wanted to try and figure them out for myself. The in game "notes" system proves somewhat useful because it automatically records information about a lot of encounters on the maps. There are challenge modes that kind of work like Binding of Isaac where if you beat a challenge, you will gain some sort of impactful benefit for your main story runs for that character. 2 more characters to go before I can say I've truly beaten the game I think. For some negatives, the game has some bugs wh en it comes to the interface sometimes. But otherwise it is very polished compared to 8 months ago or so which was the last time I played it I think... The game still has other bugs and sometimes the game lags late into the game's run or doesn't allow you to skip cutscenes however short. Other than that, I can't help but feel that other than the details about the nodes on the map that you can change depending on your decisions, I wonder if there are actually alternate endings to achieve for the character I played. I'll find out later. For now, onto the other two characters. Edit, I would just like to add, Major props to the artists and sound designers that did all the artwork, animations, voices, and music. There is ALOT for an indie effort with art that is several tiers higher than the original slay the spi re and animation that is noticeably better than another great roguelike deckbuilder game called Across the Obelisk.

This game is equal parts Slay the Spire and Hades, with a dash of Dragon Age. It's a solid deckbuilder with roguelike/ run-based elements, and a slowly unfolding, very twisty story. There's a big, hefty progression system, tons of unlockables, and a ton of variety in character builds. There's solid voice acting and world building, and a narrative that adds cool context to the gameplay. The trailers only gave me the broadest strokes of what to expect, so I understand why people may have passed this one by, but after a solid ten hours, I'm having a blast. The only knock I have is that sometimes this game doesn't explain it's various systems as well as it could-- but if you've played other deckbuilders you'll figure it out pretty quick. A solid 8/10. EDIT: Well, I've put a lot more itme into this and... it falls off hard. The endgame for each of the three characters needs a total rework. One character's final battle (which you have to unlock over several runs) turns into a dull, neverending grind, while I breezed through a different one on the first try. The early to mid game remains excellent, but boy, the end is a mess. I'd bump this thing down to a 6.5/ 10 now.

Thing that's the best: - It's such a refreshing take to the roguelike deckbuilder genre. After a few playthroughs, you know what each node is ahead of you on the map. That gives you a huge branching list of ways to play the game, what types of encounters you want to pursue, and how you want to defeat the big bad bosses along the way. I think it's a seriously underrated take on the roguelike genre. Things that are good: - The characters and their different build styles, - The different item sets and bonuses Things that are OK: - It certainly feels that there are "meta" builds that are better than others. That said, I'm sure there's a video online of someone with a bizarre build I would never dream up that's super strong. A comment that resonates from another reviewer: > the mechanics are cheesy and unfun and it railroads you into specific paths to avoid instalose mechanics. I think that this is a fair critique to a point. The mechanics to beat the end boss(es) are clear. It's HOW you get the things required to beat the bosses that is really up to you. So, yes, linear, but overall really enjoyable.

You're going to see a lot of comparisons between Knock on the Coffin Lid and Slay the Spire. I've got 550 hours at time of writing in Slay the Spire, and probably another 500 hours in deck builders across Steam, so I think it's fair to say this is a genre that I love. I think that it's worth knowing they're both in the same genre, but a direct comparison is unfair, as it often is. They do have a lot of similarities, but Knock on the Coffin Lid has a lot that it brings to the table that's new and unique. Equally, it falls a little short in some areas. Pros: [*] A vicious, dark aesthetic, with bright spots of humour and fun [*] Excellent voice acting and music design [*] A story (we play Persival, trying to uncover who poisoned his liege-lord) that unfolds through gameplay, with interesting worldbuilding and cutscenes [*] You have to pay attention to the lore and details in order to be efficient when picking your path, not just choosing for icons, but for stories you're trying to unlock. The idea is to replay different events to uncover things that will help you survive. [*] Gorgeous, large map with lots of options. [*] Equipment system which is fairly unique, including set bonuses that really play heavily into how you're building your deck. Lots of potential here for future updates that could change gameplay. You keep some equipment when you die. [*] Inventory system which stores excess potions. Lots of different potions. [*] Meaningful shop and gold system. [*] Balanced deck building with excellent levels of strategy and tactics [*] Roguelike elements in that you level up 4 different variations on the main character, each with a different deck that unlocks as you level - each deck is significantly different gameplay. [*] Some seriously difficult modes for those who like to torture Persival to the extreme. [*] Challenge mode with three playable heroes and 4 options - but 3/4 of the options just say "Coming Soon", but I'm looking forward to seeing it. [*] Lots of achievements if you like that sort of thing! Cons: [*] It feels a little bit slow to play, especially compared to the fast animation and play style of Slay the Spire. [*] It's not a bite-size game like other deckbuilders, runs can be long and require you to remember details that can be difficult if you've put it down for a few days, let alone weeks or months. Hard to jump straight back into as you have to remember what you've done to pick your next steps. [*] The UI is a bit unwieldy, which feeds into it feeling a bit slow and heavy-handed [*] Lack of shortcuts such as numbered cards to use a keyboard to efficiently play. [*] Whilst the story unfolding is a pro; it also leads to repetition, as a lot of the events remain the same through playthroughs. [*] Some boss fights (particularly the final boss, no spoilers) are not fun to play due to taking too long / massive amounts of HP and undodgeable mechanics (which are sometimes story-based). Can be frustrating. Some folks may be reading this from my old [url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/28971565/]Curator group and may be surprised to see my name pop up again. It's been 2 years since I last wrote a review, and 4 years since I was an active reviewer. Hello! This old lady is still alive! The fact that I've broken my quiet time is a testament to Knock on the Coffin Lid, the new things it brings to the table and the excitement I feel that this genre can still bring me joy. I haven't stopped gaming by any means; but it's been a long time since I felt that my voice would be a useful addition to the choir. A very solid roguelike deckbuilder that feels both satisfying and original, I'm giving it 8/10 - with a potential for a lot more in future updates.

A Slay-the-Spires-like with very high production value, in art, voice acting, and storytelling. I just finished my first run, technically a victory already. The gameplay is acceptably interesting and engaging, though it borrows enough from StS without changing it that it doesn't feel particularly new or fresh. Though I am recommending this game, I want to add a few caveats. I think the developers did an amazing job with the worldbuilding and the character design. Like seriously, kudos, I'm a huge fan of Medieval and Eldritch Horror vibes, and I think they hit the nail on the head. I think what they missed out on was why/how people play Slay the Spire. I feel like a lot of people play the game as a "hard and fast" game on the side, a quick bite-sized run between other things that ends up spiraling into hours. However, this game, with its heavy storyline and long cutscenes, makes it hard to do that. Sure, you can skip everything, but that takes time as well. It plays slower and takes longer, even on fast mode, which is less satisfying for those who are just looking to play cards and see numbers go up. The tooltips and UI are poorly optimized. As someone who's played StS and a lot of StS-likes, as well as other card games, I can instinctively understand what "Exposed" or "Burn" or "Strength" might mean. Those just starting out, however. will have to read a ton of tool tip menus to try and grasp the keywords, then remember them. It's also hard to get to those tooltips, for some reason; you hover over something, then you hover over something else, but it doesn't always come up. The equipment system, while SUPER cool and absolutely a fresh take on the genre, is hard to interact with. I can't believe I have to remember to equip potions as I go into battle, and the gear itself feels weirdly balanced. Finally, one last qualm. The game itself feels badly optimized. I've got an AMD 6700 and the first time I tried to run this game, I had to shut it down because it wouldn't load. Some of the cutscenes also took a few seconds to load, again cutting me away from the fun, speedy way I like to play these games (and I feel like most people enjoy). Overall, an incredible, pretty, and interesting game with a lot of love and developer time/strength behind it. The flavor and vibes are awesome, and the gameplay is pretty good. I think they unfortunately missed on a major point of what makes these games fun, though, so this one isn't necessarily good for those just looking to enter the genre. I would definitely recommend it to people searching for something deeper and possibly more complex, even if it feel easier at first. 8/11/2024 Edit for grammar and gameplay: I didn't realize that most of the map events would be the same once revealed. This significantly limits replay value for now, though I'm not sure if further steps in the story will change things. The interactions and lore building are certainly cool, but overall, the lack of mystery and unpredictability will eventually make this game stop somewhere. That's not a bad thing, though. Hardcore is a significant and somewhat unpleasant difficulty jump from normal, considering there's an insane difficulty as well. On normal, I was getting to the end without taking any damage, basically. On Hardcore, I can't even get past the first boss most of the time. I feel like this could be better stratified. 8/14/2024 Another edit. Just beat one of the final bosses (judging by the hints people have been dropping, there's ANOTHER). Starting on a new character and the events are all hidden for exploration again. There's a lot of little hints and events that evolve over time too, helping to enhance replayability, even on the same character, not to mention the very different character classes. I still think the balance feels off as of now. Also, to mirror another person's review and my prior opinion, I dang wish that there was an option to skip most story dialogue. When I'm just trying to grind for the deck to beat the boss, I don't really want to bother with reading everything when I know how things will go.
