Dec. 2025
That's a huge one Just in case - MASSIVE SPOILER WARNING What made me buy Kynseed? As a huge fan of Stardew Valley and the old Harvest Moon titles, I was pretty curios about Kynseed. Especially because of the "Generation-Mechanic". There was always something off about playing many ingame years, having children und buying animals in SV and HM, so I was madly interested in a game that simply continues and is not leaving me at some sort of random state of my current being - with children that never grow up and immortal animals. I think I bought Kynseed during Early Access but never really started a playthrough since like two weeks ago. And let me just say - I couldn't think of anything else but Kynseed, since I started. Keep in mind that the following pros and cons are my personal experience and that you might not feel the same about it. Pros: - This pixelart style is like crack and cocaine to me, the entire gamedesign made me want to rip out my eyes and smudge them onto my screen to appreciate every pixel. - This game is giving you so many options, like fighting in forests, owning multiple shops, customizing your farm & house, friendship, marriage and having children, "Skilltrees", many quests and a lot of lovely places to explore. - This game is kinda creepy, there are like two random encounters, I think, that run shivers down my spine and some scary enemies that completey break the entire cutesie wootsie setting of Kynseed and I like that. - There is no penalty for working through the nights. I hated it, when you fainted at 2am in SV or HM, lost some items or you had to pay for your rescue. In Kynseed you are allowed to stay awake for as long as you want. - MINIGAMES omg I love them. Let's head on with the cons: - The translation is dogshit, it feels like Google Translate should be mentioned in the credits. - Animals are kind of useless (farm only, they will offer you different combat bonuses). Dogs and Pigs are pretty useful (digging spots and movement) but idk what cats are up to, chickens feel kinda useless too, 'cause once you increased your friendship with NPCs you can simply collect eggs from their chickens. I also think I never used milk from my cow unless for growing moss. - Quests become repetitive, since there are a lot of them, they spiral a lot around finding missing items, gifting different items, cooking and piggy races. These quests are literally quite easy, in most cases you can finish them immediatly without even looking for lost and wanted items, because you already carry a lot of them with you, especially during the late game. Since these quests are so easy to accomplish, you can kind of spam them once they appear on the towns board and increase your friendship with everyone. - The "late game" is going to be my next point, because it's simply not challenging. Once I started my playthrough and got access to all the different things the game offers you, I felt overwhelmed and thought that this will be a game I can put like hundreds of hours into. But unfortunately it's not. Once you own a few shops your income is increased like crazy. Since then money will never be a problem again and you're free to buy whatever you like. Everything else sadly feels so optional. Like you don't even need to finish your fighting skilltrees to defeat the endboss, it's literally so effortless. - My next point is about the "Generation-Mechanic". Remember when I said I was crazy hyped about playing as one of my children and become stronger and stronger. Well, I never reached this significant part. My planted Kynseed is fully evolved, I reached every limit and skilled my character. But my Character is like 20 or something. I finished the main story during my second ingame year. I've read some reviews and statements on reddit in which other players experienced the same. So I don't think this is some sort of "Me-Problem". I think you only lose some of your lifetime when dying in combat or buying shit from Fairwheather. - Fairwheather will be my last and most important point. He scared me so much and once he was talking about losing lifetime whenever you buy somehting, I kind of ditched it. I thought that there might be more shit that will make me lose many years of my life, so I didn't want to spent them immediately on random stuff. Random stuff in question, because the offerings Fairweather had seemed to be sooooo useless. Like for example, once you find a Statue of the Goddess you are free to quicktravel to another statue + you can ride pigs and sheep + you will get an item that teleports you to the circle. Which are already a lot of things to travel. He will offer you 3 more ways of quicktraveling, like, my brother in christ, I can already do that. A lot of these items are negatively affected by these conditions. They are most likely not even an upgrade, they are more likely a replacement of something that already exists, which resulted in me losing interest in Fairweather. I know that this might be a "con-wall-of-text" but I have to say, that I still had a lot of fun with Kynseed and I do not regret buying it. Since it's mentioned on their Discord that Kynseed is still in development and will be filled with more content, I highly recommend it. I mean, I also recommend the game in it's current state. It is and was a great experience. If you've already lost your heart to games like Stardew Valley or Harvest Moon, this one will feel like a moon landing straight into your endorphin system <3

This is not a Stardew clone. There's a lot to say, but I'll keep it short with some pros: No inventory management. You carry everything on you with no limits. No Energy or Bedtimes. (childhood is short so doesn't count) Farming is not your job by default. All crafting comes with a special minigame Combat is actually challenging, it's unique and not just a bottonmasher. Weirdly dark themes (in a fun and mildly horrifying way) A lot of the less interesting parts, are the fact that you spend most of your time foraging/exploring and giving random crap to NPCs, who are disposable (they age out) Don't get attached to anyone, you are (by all rights) immortal. "Your progeny will rule this land!" Your character will age and die, so your goal is to find a partner and Wish for a kid to inherit your stats and continue living through them. NPCs are a means to an end. It's actually pretty important to have a ton of 'friends' because you get them to do things for you, mostly building. So don't bother hoarding things early on, or finding the perfect gifts. There are so many NPCs that if a few get pissed at you giving them an apple, there are plenty more who liked it. Time might feel fast to start because each season is only 2 weeks, but you will have PLENTY of time to do everything so there's no real need to rush. Missing an event isn't world ending, because it'll come back around soon enough. Welcome to the dark faery tale world of Kynseed

There are 3 things that made me go for Kynseed, despite not being a huge fan of cozy farming life sim type games: 1. There are no time requirements for getting things done. After a couple (literally 2) mandatory timed events in the game's prologue, you are free to choose exactly what to do when for the remainder of your playthrough. No more Atlus-style calendar to loom over your experience, making you regret choosing one activity over another. 2. Hilarious, reference-filled writing replete with wordplay, innuendo and dad jokes. 3. A unique pixel-art style that really stands out from the Stardew pack. I knew going in that there was some supernatural / fae stuff involved, but I didn't realize we were talking Midsommar / Wicker Man type shiz! No regrets tho, I love things dark, and honestly wouldn't mind if things got even darker than they do here. There are so many things I love about Kynseed, but if I had to put my finger on my single favourite aspect, it's the first time exploring a newly-opened section of the world's expansive map. When a new region would open, I'd saddle up my pig, bring my trusty dog along, and go in for that exhilarating first tour, picking up everything I found and looking for the (often cleverly hidden) mapstones. At this point, with 80+ hours in, I only have a couple more regions left to explore. But there are still tons of other reasons to keep playing. The mini-games are plentiful, and while some work better for me than others (e.g. I adore most cooking, i like fishing, i'm not nuts about crafting lotions), we are truly spoiled for variety. I've seen that Kynseed's combat really rubs some people the wrong way. Being a pretty bad player at anything reflex-based, I prepared going in by taking advantage of the game's generous Accessibility option to reduce enemies' speed, and after a couple sword upgrades I am finding combat to not only be tolerable but truly fun! Honestly, I got lots more I could say about Kynseed, but I'd rather get back to playing it. Byeeeee

I'm obsessed with farming/simulation games. All the way back to harvest moon, rune factory, animal crossing, stardew valley, my time at portia/sandrock, cult of the lamb - if it has cows and sheep, I'll give it a try. Most games in this genre do not have a strong story, and have very simple combat if they have any combat at all. It's an egregious lack that I've been chasing ever since Rune Factory let me kaiju battle my way to master farmer. Yes, give me cozy, but also let me have fun playing a game! This game? Kynseed? This game RULES. I didn't take it seriously at first, until I beat the tutorial and got my ass handed to me by a freakin' level 2 goblin... thing. The combat in this game is complex, and really fun! The characters are interesting, and the overarching storyline has me guessing like none of these games have in the past. What the HECK is going on? Why am I an orphan? What do the fey creatures want from me, and how do they relate to these goddesses that rule humanity with an iron fist? Where do all of these magical portals lead to?! It's a mystery, with some great tongue-in-cheek humor, as you discover more about this crazy world. I haven't even opened up the entirety of the map, or gotten married, but this game has me hooked, and I think you should give it a try - if you also like games with cows and sheep.

Kynseed is a game that I followed since early access. That said, I didn't buy the game until after many of the newest updates. It has gone through SO MANY changes and updates that makes this game now one of my top favourites on Steam besides Stardew Valley. I have noticed it's being compared a lot to SDV and Story of Seasons (Harvest Moon for the old school lovers). And I have to say that comparison is completely off the mark for me. Yes, Kynseed has farming, fishing and cooking that gives it a similar vibe to SDV of SoS but that's where the similarities end for me personally. Kynseed is SO much more, in my opinion. It has so many more mechanics when it comes to mini-games, owning a shop, the battles against monsters in the Woods, the story and lore that goes with it. Even the cooking is so different (I especially have a hate-love relationship with the soup making) The characters you meet, the skills and funny traits you can sometimes find on your neighbours or yourself can cause comical interactions (looking at you Flatulence trait) and the best part (again) for me personally, is the fact that you can waste away your days without being forced to sleep as an adult. I love that I can take my time with both the story and my character. If I want to offer all my years of life to Fairweather to get all the arcane items, no problem! You get an orphan to take the Kynseed over from you and begin anew. Or if you got married and had kids, any adult child can be your heir and voilà ... new start with more traits and better stats (because of course the next gen is always better LOL XD) The world of Kynseed is your oyster. For me this is perfect, I don't have to min-max anything, I don't need to be perfect, I don't have to rush to get things done because there is no time constraint. To someone like me this is relaxing AF. All that said and done, the only negative point I personally have with Kynseed is the star rating conditions of nearly everything. OMG I'm mean seriously, if there's anything that could use a bit of QoL update it's that. Some items like fruit or fish have such specific star rating requirements that I just ignore it most of the time, unless I need high quality for skills trees or if I just got lucky. All in all if you're like me and you love taking your time just running around gathering items, or forging at the blacksmith or being the best cook in all the Havens or sharpening your weapons to take on all the monsters or owning every single shop the Havens have to offer or simply raising a family and watch as the generations after you grow up... Then Kynseed is the place to be.
