I feel so bad for this lovely game. It launched too early. Core systems were not in place. Combat was literally the glitchiest I have seen in a modern game. The world felt … a little stretched out. Not empty exactly, but like I was traveling a bit too long to get to interesting things. I’m not sure why they launched when they did. Maybe pressure to start making money, maybe just error. But this is truly a very sweet, beautiful-looking game that has knee-capped itself with bad early reviews and impressions due to launching not even half-baked, but a quarter baked. I ended up putting it down because it felt like a reskin of games I have played a million times before: get iron, make a sword, turn fruit to jam, find a missing hat or whatever. But I’m recommending this game, because it truly has heart and a unique aesthetic. I can SEE what the devs are aiming for, and I hope they get there someday. My top recommendation: more unique NPC dialogue. Personally I think one of the best things Animal Crossing got (mostly) right early on was a unique thing that each NPC says every day, and if you miss it, you miss it. This game would really benefit from something like that.

Looking for a farming sim harder than stardew valley? here you go! Though Mirthwood may not be the smoothest game ever, it is highly underrated. Give their free demo a try before you buy. When trying to grow your wealth in this game it isn't as easy as growing crops and reselling for double the price. Growing and selling crops will only give you a few extra coins per product because in this farming sim you must turn the produce into actual products. Turn your wheat into bread for higher profit or even better animal feed. Have grapes? Turn it into aged wine. The random events that pop up in the game as you progress makes you feel like the world is alive even if you do not interact with the NPCs much. I am only 36 hours in but I am excited to find a husband and have a child. My farm is still growing but I am so close to building a barn. If you want realism in your farming sim please give this game a fair chance.

If I had a “maybe” option for a recommendation, I’d check it. After about ten hours in, I’ve been pulled in by what Mirthwood could be—and frustrated by where it falls short. Let’s start with the high-points. The music and voice-overs set an atmospheric tone so strong I kept pausing just to take a moment and listen. The graphics are storybook-beautiful, charming in a way that whispers “cozy medieval fantasy” but with a bit of grit. I’ve been waiting for a grimdark lifelike farming sim—“a harvest-moon meets middle-ages” kind of game—and Mirthwood is fulfilling that fantasy. The crafting loop is deep and fun: gathering, refining, building, outfitting—there’s real joy in mixing and matching furniture, walls, floors, and even tailoring your character’s look with armor, greaves, helmets and under-armor. On those fronts: 10/10. But... here’s where the cracks show. The systems I love are stellar, but others—including ones I care deeply about—just don’t land. Relationships and NPCs. I think many devs chasing the success of something like Stardew Valley underestimate how much we care about characters. In Stardew we know each villager, their quirks, their arc. In Mirthwood the folks feel like walking text-boxes: no personality, no heart. I don’t care about them. A weak social system is especially glaring when the game teases NPC death mechanics (coming in an update) but I’m hardly invested enough to care when the mechanic triggers. That disconnect is echoed across several reviews. Combat. It’s clunky. Moving a 2D‐style character in a 3D space, fighting, especially with a bow—just feels awkward. I roll past an enemy, swing the wrong way, miss entirely. Based on external reviews: “enemies constantly jump backwards to avoid attacks… you can only perform combat actions while facing left or right” CGMagazine “archery… tricky to use… precision feels nearly impossible” Gamerheads Podcast Yes, melee feels okay, but the lack of a proper lock-on system like classic titles (e.g., The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time) makes fights frustrating rather than fun. Farming & loop issues. On the upside, you can play in a “build up your homestead” mode, which I love. But some systems drag: seeds are costly; upgrades require massive material investment; and there’s a sense of going in circles. One reviewer said: “My character still hasn’t managed more than one tool upgrade after 20 hours.” PC Gamer (someone doesent know how to grind like a pro lol) And others point to performance problems—frame rate drops, stutters—which hamper immersion. Overall? Yes—you should play Mirthwood. It is absolutely worth your time if you’re drawn to its artistic vision, the sandbox-life chase, the crafting aesthetic. But go in knowing it’s a “beautifully imperfect” piece right now. It’s as much about promise as it is about present execution. If you’re someone who cares most about character heart, super tight combat, or ultra-polished systems—I’d wait for the next major update. But if you’re happy wandering, building, crafting, and immersing in mood, you’re in for a treat.

I really enjoy this game. Even more than Stardew Valley since I like the more realistic, medieval approach of it. Graphics are gorgeous and the developers are very active on Discord, listening to player feedback and wishes and are working hard on adding new content every few months. Sure, the game has some bugs here and there and is not as polished as other games - yet. Like I said, the developers, and if i remember correctly the development team only consists of 2! people, are constantley working on the game and I am more than sure that this game will become even better in the foreseeable future. If you are looking for a game that has the right amount of relaxing gameplay and challenges (regarding combat and managing resources and money) with awesome graphics and a feeling of being at home - then look no further!

Solid game, just needs quite a bit more polish before it leaves early access. Early game is quite awkward in terms of progression, but overall fun. It's like an RPG enjoyer's version of that other famous farm game. EDIT: It's been fully released... yeah nah needs more work. Now that co-op and family is implemented they can iron out the bugs.
