REVIVE! REVIVE! (NOTE: This review focuses more on elements outside of the core gameplay loop) I’ll start by simply saying I haven’t been this impressed by a horror experience since the remake of Resident Evil One. This is a masterclass in atmospheric storytelling, world-building, and reverent Japanese mythological homage. Right from the opening sequence, Labyrinth of the Demon King establishes something far more interesting than many of its kind never even bothers to do. It goes a few steps beyond than just setting a mood, it builds a world. There’s cultural weight woven into this game, the game draws heavily from the admittedly slightly overdone Japanese traditional myths without ever feeling unoriginal. It reinterprets those legends through a sincerely inspired survival horror lens, creating something familiar but proudly unique. The story is paced brilliantly, it’s always compelling. it understands that survival horror gradual ramp up, in that increasingly stressful but rewarding way. As you explore deeper into the labyrinth and its surrounding environments, the narrative expands with layers and symbolism. And when the final reveal lands, it re-frames the plot and all the struggle you’ve gone through in such a satisfying way. Side characters in survival horror games are usually relegated to merchants of some kind, and that’s no different here. However, in this case, they managed to be interesting (both visually and thematically) enough to a point you want more out of them just because it's so well crafted, and this is all done while building into the world flawlessly. It’s a small thing but it just adds that extra layer of care that goes a long way. This extends basically every aspect of the game. for example, the idea of being incentivised to sit down and make tea when you enter the hub is such a thought-out way to make it feel like a true “safe haven” and these small intentional design elements just make to whole experience feel handcrafted and well designed. The enemy designs are also a solid piece of the puzzle. Every creature feels built with soul- not just in appearance, but in purpose as well. And that’s my main takeaway, this is a game with actual soul, like the people who made it were passionate and are proud of this, and they absolutely should be. Visually, the game is a work of art. Enough said on that. But if your wondering- Yes. Even something as simple as how the game looks when paused is done with the aesthetics and thematic feel in mind. The soundtrack is equally exceptional, mixing traditional Japanese instruments with eerie, silent hill reminiscent sound design. You’ll hear taiko drums in the distance, subtle shakuhachi melodies intertwined with tasteful effects, and this does help lead to that very heavy and oppressive atmosphere this game absolutely nails. Just the haunting ambient tones that constantly remind you this place is not right feel so damn thought out. It’s one of the few horror game scores in recent memory since silent hill that feels like a living part of the world, not just a background effect. In terms of Gameplay. Its survival horror. Very good survival horror. Don’t be expecting sekiro’s combat system, but there’s a decent amount to master and learn here and it feels very satisfying to do so. You feel the physical engagement in the system; the katana feels like a katana. And although there are games that do this aspect much better, for a survival horror game in this style? It’s pretty damn good, and most importantly, satisfying. In the end, what makes Labyrinth of the Demon King so special is its soul. And you can really feel that throughout. It rightfully treats itself as a work of art and there’s truly something special here. Final Verdict: 9.5/10 Labyrinth of the Demon King is an extraordinary survival horror experience that pays deep, meaningful homage to Japanese folklore while delivering a very well-made story, unforgettable atmosphere, and terrifying enemies. It's a beautifully crafted descent into the haunted soul of purgatory itself. A must-play for horror fans, and an absolute triumph for indie survival horror.

This game is a gem, not a flawless one but one pretty close. Steam Deck players, this game worked extremely well on my deck for my entire playthrough. Feel safe to buy it despite it's current "unknown" compatibility.

holy hell, where to start with this? I've been keeping an eye on the development of this game for almost the entire duration of my undergrad; I've known for a long time that it'd appeal to my love of first-person dungeon crawlers a-la Shadow Tower (and survival horror in general), but as of release, it's exceeded all of those expectations: like a perfectly refined crack gem of everything I enjoy in these types of games. combat has some minor issues with timing and readability that I could work around, but I'm sure some will find extremely frustrating, as they make some encounters feel moderately more difficult and unpredictable than they probably should. that being said, most of the "jank" or "clunkiness" of the combat is clearly intended to promote skill development and mastery of the combat system as you spend more time with it. it lets you feel very competent (powerful, even) while still punishing you severely for making mistakes. in my experience, most games which attempt this sort of approach end up eschewing all but the aesthetics of the horror genre (e.g. RE4), making LotDK a rare exception. on top of that, the art and worldbuilding of this sengoku-era nightmare world are sublime, and there really isn't a single moment where I couldn't feel the respect and attention to detail that the developer put into this project. despite a somewhat anticlimactic ending, I can't recommend it enough. I haven't felt this strongly about a dungeon crawler since Lunacid first released, and I haven't enjoyed the atmosphere of a horror game this much since I first played Kuon. it's wonderful.

Finished the game in one session and I loved it. It matched my expectations which were pretty high. A lot of obvious things to praise it for, but here are the thoughts it left me with - POSITIVES +++++ weirdly hard and weirdly forgiving. The game starts off pretty merciless, with high pressure scenarios and certain death, but there's not much of a penalty at all for dying and the game tricks you into being more afraid about healing items than you really need to be. Once you have an idea of how the systems work and upgrade your gear, it becomes much easier in a very satisfying way. +++ puzzles are mostly fun. The puzzles are classic survival horror and they are very well placed in the flow of the game. Some of them I stumbled into but a couple of them I had to scratch my head a minute. +++ satisfying sense of discovery. NEGATIVES / AMBIGUOUS - the game's style is spectacular but some areas really needed a few more visual cues to keep things distinct. fun to get lost in the maze but I have a higher tolerance for it than most people, I think. - I got very lucky with my instincts regarding the upgrade materials, but my experience with the game might've been a lot less positive if I'd shot myself in the foot by spreading those out too much. definitely pick a lane when the game feels like it's getting unfair and then stick to it. or make a save just before you drop a bunch of mats to make sure it feels like a decent decision. - there's an area of the game I really enjoyed but man, you run back and forth through a few loading zones like 10 to 20 times to press some buttons and then check back on an area to see the difference and it's pretty brain numbing. Oddly this is when I "locked in" and decided to finish the game in one sitting, so maybe it was a genius move. - wah wah wah I wish there was a new game plus mode of some kind. would have really enjoyed having a new weapons to make a second run more worthwhile. Or ya know, just whole sale copying the NG+ challenges and unlock systems of modern RE games. Anyway, game is tremendous. Grats to developers.

King's Field + Silent Hill + Forbidden Siren. Gruesome atmosphere, bone chilling music and unsettling retro graphics. Pretty good and very interesting indie game so far. I can't wait to delve deeper into this world, currently busy with DOOM: The Dark Ages. Only complaint I have is the framerate lock but the developers will try to fix that. Review will be edited later when I will have finished it.
